A BIOS question

I use a fucking Compaq Presario 5000 and the BIOS it comes shipped with it is totally gross. Is their anyway i can install a good bios(like amiBIOS) or something, so that i have more control on my comp's equipment...

Too-DAMN-Much 20th November 2005 09:19

i doubt it, no idea for sure, but at the very least maybe you could flash the existing BIOS to a newer version

Mr Jones 20th November 2005 10:42

More to the point, why would you want to bother?, exactly how long do you spend using the bios of your PC???

c2R 20th November 2005 11:07

A new BIOS would sometimes be useful - for example my Intel one only supports 1 floppy drive, which is stupid, because obviously two can still be connected, and now I've had to set up a manual switch to change between 5,25" and 3" (yes, 3", not 3.5")

However, flashing someone else's bios over yours generally won't work because of the way the hardware etc is configured on the board - A better solution is to swap the motherboard....!

i meant that he should possibly flash it with an updated version of the BIOS included, not an entirely new one :p

The BIOS shipped with my comp enables me these things: Changing the drive load order, setting up a BIOS password and a boot password. All this in 9 languages. Huh! Well, i want to do so for two reasons:

1.I wanna overclock my Processor.
2.I have onboard graphics and 256 MB RAM. Some games require 128 MB RAM, but a 32MB card. I currently have only 16MB dedicated to the GPU. I want to allocate it so that my CPU gets around 192MB and my GPU gets 64MB RAM more or some minor adjustments like that. And it is so, because even when i am running GTA:VC, my RAM is only 60% full and the rest is free.

Thirdly, i would also like more data abt my PC, but doesn't matter as i can get that by using Everest too.

Anyone who can help...

Even if you could overclock it (depending on the chipset it may be possible to do a fsb overclock in windows), the cooling wont allow you to go far enough to make it worthwhile. The PSU probably wont have enough headroom for it either. Also, even if you could allocate 32/64mb of your ram for the onboard graphics, it'd probably be too slow for any game that requires that much video memory.

Dump the mobo, psu & case for something decent. Get a new video card while you're at it. Sorry to say it, but there's really not much you can do to improve the performance oem systems.

my dad works in a company called IOC. It gives loans on branded comps, not on assembled comps, unfortunately. And i don't think my dad's gonna buy me anything for the next 3 years, as they are years of extreme academic importance...

The only reason to flash your motherboard BIOS is if there's an official update. In particular my old one needed to be flashed before my sound card would work with it, due to some bug or another.

Too-DAMN-Much 20th November 2005 13:27

about 1GB 256MB of ram less, and you have onboard video, i was just kidding though :D

rohan_pwln 20th November 2005 14:41

Truly speaking, i really didn't get what you were saying. I was going to call you a buffon, but i happened to read your signature: Shit, did i say that? or just think it? was i talking? did they hear me?

Too-DAMN-Much 20th November 2005 23:16

ok, lemme spell it out...
