Video playback problems
 

I've been having some problems with some of my .avi files, but I can't figure out what could have caused it.

I initially thought it was something to do with the encoding--I could have deleted something by accident, an update for Winamp3 was required, etc.--but after downloading the latest version of Winamp and nigh unto a gazillion codec packs, the problem hasn't gone away. D:

The audio is fine, but the image turns pixellated and drags... It's a bit hard for me to describe. Sample file: It goes from this to this. But it's fine immediately afterwards... And the dragging looks something like this. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

All of my files were fine initially, but then all of a sudden... Some exploded. It was really quite sad. And the weirdest thing about it all, to me, is that it's only bits and pieces of a file that are messed up. The rest is in perfectly good condition.


...And if this has been covered somewhere else, I apologize. >__< It's a bit hard to search for something when you don't know what it is you're searching for.

EDIT: I just checked, and WMP seems to have the same problem. If that tells you anything... I've also downloaded VLC Media Player, which handles the files fine, but I would reeeally like to solve this. *angst!*

If nobody can solve this, it would be nice if somebody could let me know that so I can go ahead and try consulting some official "computer people." XD;

Sounds like video card drivers. "Deblocking" is usually done on the video card... In your video card configuration (control panel->display->settings->advanced->troubleshooting), try reducing your acceleration level. Slide it to the level that says "Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations"

If that fixes it, try to update your video card drivers and system drivers. If you've recently updated your video card drivers, you might try to rollback to an old version...

If the problem persists, please read this first

#1. ensure that you have your video drivers installed

#2. uninstall all codec packs (they are evil)

#3. install the necessary codecs only (directshow filters)

Did you ever find a solution? I have the same problem...
I updated my video drivers without any change.
I run ffdshow, Haali Media Splitter, and Winamp 5.3
Gspot says the codecs are installed

No, I didn't, and I use some of the same things you do. :/ I just open VLC Player any time I want to watch a video.

Haali Media Splitter is no good for AVI.
Just stick with the default Windows AVI Splitter, which will then send DivX/XviD content to ffdshow for decoding.
Use Haali for MP4, MKV & OGM demuxing only.

This really irritates me, I want to use winamp.
I hope it's cool to revive this thread, since it's still an issue...

some program called MPlayer Control can ply it okay but the program is crap (IMO). Windows Media Player has the same problem as Winamp and so does Media Player Classic.

Try upgrading ffdshow to the latest version.

I thought that I _had_ the latest... Thanx that's got it working. I tried an xvid and it seemed to still have the problem playing it, but I checked the file with Gspot and it had some sort of error in the file. So all's well...

I just wish I'd asked here first, I spent all day trying to fix this. OI!
