I voted for NOD32.

And thanks for putting it in the poll. I think I was the only person to mention it. :)

I've tried all the ones most commonly used, and this one meets my needs the best. Very low overhead (I've played 3D games while NOD32 was scanning in the background, and had no problems), as few registry entries as possible, thorough protection (stopped 100% of infections in tests), and a nice, concise user interface. The price is average for non-freeware AV systems, at ~$28 for a 1 year license.

The work I do on my home network is a combination of personal and business, and I wouldn't trust it to any other anti-virus system.

randy-man turned me on to Avast, which, I think, is very good.

Even though when the *alarm* goes off it sounds like a prison break!

Omega X 27th December 2005 20:50

Avast.

Norton is a hog, McAfee is just like Norton but with too much red. Heard about Panda, but I thought that it was Server side only. Heard rants about NOD32 but atfirst I thought it was for Linux only so I never researched it. Wanted to try AVG but some rumblings about it sent me to Avast first.

Been with Avast for a few months now and I think that its the best free solution out there. I might even pay for the Pro version since it works so well with my 'puter.

I took Sarge's advice and pitched a Panda for Avast (Yarrrrr matey)
Avast rules but gets a bit too dramatic.

I made the mistake of leaving my stereo amplifier turned on one night when I first started using avast! and let it run while I was asleep. I forgot to disable the sounds, so needless to say, when it found a virus, I nearly fell out of bed because of the insane siren alarm sound that was blaring from my surround system. :igor:

I disabled the sounds after that. :D <3 avast!

I've noticed that too, from time to time. It likes to happen when the computer's been sitting for a while, it may also explain why my screensaver does not work sometimes. perhaps I'll give avast! a try.

My prefered anti-virus:

:( i cant vote, antivir isnt on the list
1. its free!
2. uses very little resources

gaekwad2 30th December 2005 22:20

AntiVir always seems to get overlooked. (I use it too.)

ScorLibran 31st December 2005 00:24

If we can get Missy to vote, NOD32 would have two whole votes. :p

sgtfuzzbubble011 31st December 2005 02:20

Added Antivir to the poll. You can vote for it now, or if you've already voted for something else and would like your vote changed, lemme know. :)

Joel 31st December 2005 03:34

Is really Antivir free, free upgrades, free updates, free of eating RAM and multilanguages?

gaekwad2 31st December 2005 03:45

yes, yes, yes, about 8MB atm (20MB virtual memory), not sure (website is German/English)

c2R 31st December 2005 08:39

Could we have f-prot added too (o;

Well, I did give avast! a try, and it does seem to be better than AVG was at not freezing my computer. And now my screensaver always works.

Warrior of the Light 31st December 2005 17:53

switched from norton2003 to avast! 4.6 home edition

Joel 31st December 2005 19:01

To Warrior of the Light & beanboy89:
Avast! is cool... I hope that you don't scared when Avast! founds a virus ^^

ujay 31st December 2005 19:56

Been using NOD32 for around 3 years now, very powerful, very unintrusive.

Never a bother on it

sgtfuzzbubble011 1st January 2006 00:00

Added F-Prot as well. Lemme know if I need to change vote numbers for anything. :)

ElChevelle 1st January 2006 00:21

Put ACHEV! up there to just for shits and giggles;)

Where can I download the software called not being stupid
:D

Oh! And I tested Antivir and I must say is a good software, but I think is slowing my PC a little bit...at least not slow as kaspersky did ¬¬

I do my network the other way around...no (software) firewall and a good AV system. I use my home network for work too, and it's too easy to get viruses from legitimate attachments and even business s/w downloads. Avoiding viruses isn't just about not being stupid yourself, but it would take everyone else not being stupid as well. Since that's not going to happen, I need an AV system. :)

And I stopped using software firewalls about a year ago. Sitting behind a NAT router provides a natural hardware firewall that gives me very thorough traffic control. I ended up getting 100% false alarms from all the software firewalls I tried, so I ditched them.

If you can do a licensed AV product, try out NOD32. Its system kernel runs in about 4.5 MB, and I never notice a performance impact of any kind. I even set it to use advanced heuristics, and there's still no slow down.

Joel 1st January 2006 15:40

I did use Nod32 in the past, but It was good with kerio, they often hang-out my PC when I visited some sitez

ScorLibran 1st January 2006 15:44

Yeah, you'd have to disable any AV system using heuristics if you visit any "questionable" sites, otherwise they'd start ramping up their overhead to stop infections. Same with a software firewall blocking unwanted program loads. (And Kerio is the best software firewall I've tried as well, with Sygate being a close second, and we tested several dozen.)

Mr_007 26th April 2006 15:32

I think norton is good for protect of your pc also
your pc start up get slowdown.

Widdykats 26th April 2006 17:12

I understood that!

gameplaya15143 6th May 2006 16:33

I finally put my vote in for antivir.. which i havent updated the definitions for in like a year :tinfoil:

I only keep it installed because it doesn't use enough resources for me to care about.

A decent firewall and a brain is all you need to stay virus free :) ... a lot of people have a decent firewall, that leaves the other thing that they are missing

(kerio is too bloated for my taste, 3 processes.. wtf)

k_rock923 6th May 2006 16:47

However, scor, a NAT router is not a firewall per se. While it can act like one, it only works because it won't let random people see your ports. If something from the inside phones home or initiates the connection, or if you havea lot of port forwarding set up, you could get burned. You're really better off setting up a box running ipcop or the like and using it as your router.

cooky560 6th May 2006 17:39

AVG, always have, always will

Correct. To clarify, a NAT router provides the protections of a hardware firewall from external intrusions in a very economical and simple way. No add-on units required, since with a home network you're usually going to have a router anyway, and most consumer routers provide network address translation.

The average non-techie consumer is not going to run a dedicated box, especially since they can buy a simple NAT router from Walmart/Target/Best Buy/etc. and use it's default configuration (plus an active WPA) for very thorough protection.

And port-forwarding is something that shouldn't be done except in special situations - specific apps that require it, or for online gaming. And I don't associate with those weird gaming types anyway.

;) :p

After running my WinXP network in it's current configuration for four years - both for personal and mission-critical business functions - with a Netgear NAT router, Eset NOD32 AntiVirus and Ad-Aware, and having put it to many rigorous tests, I've had no infections or infiltrations to date. And my network has been a very desirable target for hackers and identity thieves (it contained thousands of people's social security numbers and other personal information during 2004 and 2005).

NOD32 has certainly proven its top ratings to me time and again, especially after having tried so many different A/V products. There's none I'd trust more.

:)

k_rock923 7th May 2006 15:32

good points indeed. The reason I posted it is that I do have some port forwarding set up to allow ssh and vnc. access to my boxes behind the router. Although, i also have it set up so that you have to know 4 passwords to get vnc going. :p

I'd like to set up public/private keys so that you need the key and the password to connect. Don't know how i'd go about that thouhg.
