New Convert

I found WINAMP last year, in September, after I had built my fourth computer and signed on to the Internet for the first time.

The other players (i.e. Windows Media player, RealPlayer, QuickTime) haven't got ANYTHING going for them! Obviously.

I started out, last year with Windows98 (Original Edition) and my "Spare Parts Antique Software Model" computer. I didn't get very far with my equipment, when I ran into trouble. Glitching while I tried to "surf" the web. So now, I have "updated" to Windows98 (Second Edition) and am having better preformance.

The motherboard is a Shuttle HOT-591p running all of the software to make it connect at 2.7mps through a LAN. Powered by a AMD 500Mhz processor - 256Mb Ram (with George Breese's interleave enabler for VIA Chipsets) - 8Meg graphics card... it is a time-consuming, high maintenance machine. But that's OK. I've got time.

Here's the big question:

With all of these other players running, will I have conflicts? I don't like media player, but my "CD-ripping" son thinks it's the "only thing", man. I tried to show him the benefits of WinAmp but things went "haywire" while demonstrating (Murphy's law). I tell him that I need to get the other players OFF of the system or at least make WinAmp my default player, but I can't figure it out.

Problem number two:

The visualization plug-in should "pop" right up with the music (I know I had it set that way at one time).

Here's the ERROR message:

DirectX initialization failed (GetDeviceCaps).

This means that no valid 3D-accelerated display adapter could be found on your computer.
If you know this is not the case, it is possible that your graphics subsystem is temporarily unstable; please try rebooting your computer, and then try to run the plugin again. Otherwise, please install a 3D-accelerated display adapter.

OK

Would ANYBODY know what I'm doing wrong?

Well, personally (long time winamp user) go with CDex, I have found its on the slow side, but its free, and very good for CD ripping.[edit]but to answer your question, i do not believe those will conflict with winamp's ripping ability.

to make winamp your default media player: preferences > file types, select all, and check "maintain file associations"

does this help your vis prob: linky

ARRG!

I was going to answer a question from another WinAmp user. Well, it took me about five tries and three e-mails to get back to this point. Login wasn't working, so I went back through all of the nonsense to get "re-signed" up. For whatever reason this site is among the "difficult to sign up for"... I don't even remember what the question was...?

Oh yeah. I have an ridiculously old computer that still keeps up with most things on the Internet. Except when the SYOPs throw in all the extra security stuff. Common sense... Intuition... doesn't do a bit of good. I'm just lucky I made it back to this screen.

Oh yeah. There is NO setting as you described Billy boy...

"...to make winamp your default media player: preferences > file types, select all, and check "maintain file associations"

How about...

Options/Preferences/General Preferences/File Types/Associated File Types

check the box that says "Restore file associations at Winamp startup"... Is THIS what you're talking about?

ARRG!!

yeah sorry, was not verbatim

if that doesnt work, perhaps reinstall over your original install and file associations should return to winamp.
