mp3s not sorted by tags in library
please help me. i've ben using musicmatch jukebox for a year, and i want to ditch it.
but with winamp i have this annoying library problem. my problem is: when i first add mp3s to my library they are sorted according to their id3 tags, but if i edit the tags with another program and then re-add them, winamp does not use the id tag, but rather the filename, and it doesn't even use the file name properly. if i specify the fields (artist-album-track number-title) it still invariably uses the name of the folder the file is in as the album name. but never mind that last bit. my files are all perfectly tagged and i just want to know why isn't winamp using the tags to sort the files? when i view info the tags are there, but when i "edit selected items" i find the sorting info that is incorrect. i can edit this manually and then winamp organize the files propetly, but this is lame and time-consumimg. why is it reading the tags but not using the info there-in? thank you! |
Maybe this...

let's keep it simple
never mind external tag editor and updating.
i uninstalled winamp to start over. when i re-installed i went to the music library. it prompted me to add tracks. i addded about 3,000 tracks. they are all sorted under the correct artist name, but albums are invariable the name of the folder the track is in. this is useless because i keep all my tracks in three or four folders. i am using windows XP sp2, fully updated. winamp 5.12 i don't know how to take a screen shot, but the problem here is really simple. please help. thanks. ~daniel |
Did you install any 3rd-party plugins? (especially input plugins like mp3pro)
|
If it's not a 3rd-party plugin like mp3pro to blame, and the problem persists after a clean install, then the only other thing it can be is if there's no actual Album tag then Winamp will guess the album title based on the containing folder name.
To disable this, go to: Winamp > Prefs > Media Library > Watch Folders tab > Configure button: Checkmark "no guessing" (note: it's recommended to keep "read media info on import" checkmarked) |
thanks
yes, i have an mp3pro plugin.
i have copious mp3pro files, but this is becoming yet another reason to get rid of the format completely. thus far i am having success adding the files and having the tags read properly. i have only disabled the plugin, so i am hoping i can just enable it after the library is filled in. i'll see how it goes though. thanks for all your help. this is the first time i ever actually got a useful answer from a forum. ~daniel |
