Just what purpose does "Dark Ambient" serve??

Bands like Coil, Merzbow, Still Searching For Humans.

What mood/occasion do they serve?

taylormemer 5th February 2006 11:56

What the hell is dark ambient dude?

Cylob 5th February 2006 12:14

It's highly rated (for some reason), the tracks veer from 10 seconds of scratching to 10 minutes of scratch, pause, scratch.

Merbow throw in sounds that'll make your speakers walk. :D

Yet, it's popular?

gaekwad2 5th February 2006 12:19

Merzbow always seemed like an academic project to me, an effort to create the purest noise. Also obviously influenced by some 60s drone experiments.

As for Coil, I only know the records they made up to ~91, which are clearly more industrial than ambient.

Cylob 5th February 2006 12:36

'Academic Project' just about clears it up.

Nice one gaekwad, I don't have to take Merzbow seriously now. :D

Mattress 6th February 2006 17:26

scratching like turntable scratching?

somehow I doubt that's what you meant...

Cylob 6th February 2006 18:39

No, more like wire on glass. :(

Mattress 6th February 2006 18:46

sounds miserable

Cylob 6th February 2006 19:06

Without doubt, the most miserable noise to hit my ears. :D

Disclaimer:
The above statement does not take into account the mainstream (1995-2005), grindcore, punk-pop, emo, nu-metal, thrash and Jimmy Somerville.

zootm 7th February 2006 10:24

My friend's a big Merzbow fan. It's the same sort of thing as any musical experimentation, really.

Apparently his crossover stuff with Alec Empire is really good, pulls it together somewhat.

I've always found Coil to be very useful when I wanted to piss off the neighbours...

If it ever happened to me, I'd vacate the house for a week (programming Right Said Fred to blast between 2-4am, nightly). I'd fully expect to return, finding the house either (a) in flames, or (b) taken over by gay squatters.

It's not really musical experimentation, there's no tune to speak of. Alec Empire collaborating with Merzbow is a chilling thought...

taylormemer 7th February 2006 12:37

It all sounds too weird for me...

Actually, other than the I'm too sexy song, most of the other songs on that album are happy/cheesy pop love songs; not necessarily gay either.

Cylob 7th February 2006 18:41

It'd be 'I'm Too Sexy' on a continuous loop.

There's no way on earth I'm listening to a RSF album to test your point, so I'll just have to accept it. :D

Cylob,

Check out "Heresy" by Lustmord or get "Ambient Mutations 13" by Seism (2 hour track available for free from www.archive.org).

:D
