winamp hangs for a good 10 seconds on startup

I just downloaded 5.2 becuse winamp BEGGED me to, so I did it. Now, I have a lag of about 10 seconds or more at least, between when I click the link, and winamp is useable. It actually starts up frozen, then spools my cd drive, then its useable. I have a huge collection of mp3s (200+gigs), but I dont think that is the problem here. Anyone know? I already tried clean install, and it did not fix the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. .

djemale 27th February 2006 22:14

Mine hangs for about a minute.

Kinda annoying...gonna revert back to an older version for now.:(

seaneboysays 28th February 2006 02:45

blasted

bleh dammit. . yeah ok. . know a good version to revert back to? 4. something?

djemale 28th February 2006 21:18

I went back to 5.13 just because it was the last one I saved on my harddrive.

DJ Egg 28th February 2006 21:25

Alas, you've not really provided us with any/enough relevant info to help diagnose the problem.

At a guess, it could be something to do with the new Portable Media Player support plugin/modules.

Winamp\Plugins folder:
ml_pmp.dll | pmp_p4s.dll | pmp_ipod.dll | pmp_njb.dll

If not, then it could be due to some 3rd-party plugin which you may have installed previously....?

Or maybe an issue with the skin you are using...?

You tell us.

seaneboysays 1st March 2006 01:10

Ok, just wiped out the plugins folder, and pow, starts instantly. . good call. . thanks. .

DJ Egg 1st March 2006 02:29

Wiped out the plugins folder? You mean you deleted everything in it?

If so, then hopefully that means you also reinstalled Winamp afterwards,
otherwise you won't have support for any file formats or playback of anything.

Or did you mean you just wiped those pmp files that I referenced above?

Or you (also) removed some old 3rd-party plugins?

Just making sure, and also because I don't want anyone else to interpret your post as an instruction to wipe every file in the Plugins folder, heh.

seaneboysays 1st March 2006 04:30

lol yeah i reinstalled afterwards, thanks for the concern. . haha. .

seaneboysays 1st March 2006 04:34

actually, so i reinstalled ,and its lagging again. . how odd, i removed those said files, and left all rest. . no good. . what the nuts? i disabled cd play support, because i thought the time for the cd to spool was the problem. . doesnt spool the cd, but still lags. .

oilers4life 1st March 2006 04:58

I cannot believe I wrecked my old winamp for this crap ass version. I feel so stupid, I had it set up so nicely, but those damn reminders to download the new version popped up. I was thinking it wouldn't do anything too drastic, but all I got was a slow crap ass winamp. I am so disappointed it's not even funny.

Anyone have the older version of winamp before this one?

seaneboysays 2nd March 2006 04:10

lol oilers, now that was a team! hah. . yeah, mine insisted on downloading too, go figure. .

DJ Egg 2nd March 2006 05:41

Well, I could just quote my first post again...

We need more info if we are going to be able to help you at all.

Even Windows OS would be a start, heh.

More than likely it's some 3rd-party plugin to blame (ie. a My_Plugin_List.txt file would help us to diagnose this), or possibly some issue with either the Portable Media Player support or the Sonic Burning/Ripping Engine. Did you check/uncheck these in the installer options? Who knows?! Did you try a clean install?

[Edit]
@seaneboysays
info/instructions re: my_plugin_list can be found via the "more info" link above.
[/Edit]

And by the way...

Winamp > Prefs > General Preferences:
Uncheck: Look for new versions at Winamp startup

(that option's been in Winamp for like 7 years)

Happens to me too

I'd say its more than 10 seconds, more like 30 for me. Sometimes I go use the restroom or something when I want to start up winamp ;). I don't have any special plug-ins or anything, did a fresh install after I uninstalled 5.13 - and I haven't tweaked with anything besides having to re-enter my music into the library (1857 songs). I never install the winamp agent or video support. Kinda angry I paid for a product that doesn't have old versions up for download. From reading the forums there seems to be no solution either... oh why did I install 5.2? Just makes me afraid to do any updates ever again.

Running Windows XP SP2 Professional
Using onboard audio Realtek AC'97 Audio (*fully updated) on a Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard

seaneboysays 2nd March 2006 15:34

just google for it, youll find a bunch. . use their bug fix (version list) to find the old version numbers

tnblank77 2nd March 2006 16:50

Thanks for the help. I found 5.13 pro on this site (even though they don't have any easy to find links?)

http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/...amp513_pro.exe

DJ Egg 2nd March 2006 18:16

All versions available here
www.winampheaven.net

However, we still can't reproduce the problem with 5.2
It loads at just the same speed as always for everyone else, if not quicker.

The only other thing I can think of
is maybe a problem with winamp.m3u (root Winamp folder)

Open it in Notepad

and remove all text after #EXTM3U

Save it, and then try to reopen Winamp again.

seaneboysays 2nd March 2006 18:23

will do. . how odd. . i wonder why you are not having this issue. . how do i open it via notepad? also, when i double click winamp.m3u it starts winamp immediately, without delay. .lol, just tested winamp.exe, and it opens without delay as well...so apparently the problem as been fixed, not sure how, perhaps a restart after removing those dlls you suggested earlier? either way. . good to go for me! and thank you!

tnblank77 2nd March 2006 18:25

I haven't uninstalled 5.2 yet so I tried deleting everything after "#EXTM3U" in that file (which was a list of all my songs). Still takes forever to load, and now my playlist is gone!

EDIT:
D'oh to me, I meant to say playlist...

Apparently deleting those dll files (ml_pmp.dll | pmp_p4s.dll | pmp_ipod.dll | pmp_njb.dll) makes it load fast though - sorry I would have tried it earlier but I'm at work! (and I assumed people that posted afterward would have tried it :P)

DJ Egg 2nd March 2006 18:29

@tnblank77

D'oh!

Your media library should still be there.
winamp.m3u is just the last playlist which was loaded in the playlist editor window, when you last closed winamp.

Because seaneboysays says that his problem is now fixed, and that was after deleting/disabling the PMP files I referenced earlier (see how Portable Music Player support is NOT listed under Media Library in his plugin list)... then I suggest that you do the same. More than likely, it's just pmp_p4s.dll causing the issue.

[Edit]

Double d'oh! Ok, seen your edit now. Cool :)

seaneboysays 3rd March 2006 05:27

thanks egg!

seaneboysays 3rd March 2006 17:45

wtf, return of the lag. . .so now today, i start up my box, and winamp lags. . i click the quick start icon, and it doesnt even register on taskbar for a good 15 seconds again. . wtf could this possibly be? the computer isnt bogged down at all, it will still load an IE window in under a second, but winamp will still be in the process. . wtf

SailorMoon 12th April 2006 08:54

I had the same problem.
Downgrading to 5.13 solved it.

(sry 4 bad english :D )
