Unable to modify some id3 tags

Hi,
I have a couple of mp3 files that I'm unable to modify theid3 tags. When I try to update them, I get the error message "Can't modify tag(s)! File is read only!"

I checked the file attributes and they're not read only. I'm able to change the title under properties->summary but that only changes the id3v2 title and I want to change the rest of the fields as well. How do I do that?

Thanks.

Yeah

I've got the exact same problem. I didn't know that you could change the v3 tags under properties, and have now done so... but like you I'd like to change my v1 tags... and can't.

I've tripple checked. hell, I've like... whatever-15-times-is checked that it's NOT in read only mode in the windows properties. Winamp just does NOT want to let me change the tags.

If anyone has ANY ideas of how to get this fixed, please do tell!.
thanks.

Not sure what's going on there...
i_says, do you get the same error message as galapogos?

Does it happen for all files, or only some of them?

Are those files on a network drive, or on a local harddisk?

Do the filenames/tags have any international/unicode characters in them?

Also please confirm you're using the latest version of Winamp (5.21), and whether or not you're using any 3rd-party plugins (and if so, which ones).

yeah, i get the same error message as galapogos.

it only happens for some of the files. very few. they are on a local hard disk, and yes, the one i just mentioned does have unicode charas in it. or atleast extended ascii. but ive had other files which did not have strange characters in them with this problem too.

im using 5.2 i just checked. so its new.
im not sure which plugins youre talking about, but im using the following 3rd party plugins

live messenger 8 status plugin V0.24
audioScrobbler for winamp V1.1.10(ML Mode)
and im useing the CearONE skin (required to install stuff so i figured id mention that too).

but i still had the problem before i used any of those plugins.

if youve got any idea, please let me know

thanks a million!

When you try to edit the tags, is the file currently playing? Or is it loaded in some other application that could block access to the file?

How are you editing the tags? From the Media Library or from the playlist editor?
If you right-click the file in the playlist editor > View file info, is all info correctly displayed there?
(it does not say 'No file', for example?)

Please provide system specs (read this!). Perhaps a HijackThis log will give some clues.

i_says 5th May 2006 17:56

no, the file isnt playing, and no other app is using it.

im editing it right from my playlist (i dont use the fancy new library thing, havnt found need for it... and dont know how to use it. never tried to learn). i hit view file info, and its wrong. i go to try to change it and it wont let me update. it gets the path right (althoguh the unicode charas are represented with question marks), and the file will PLAY... but i just cant update the file info.

my specs are:
-MB: asus A7v266-E DDR
-CPU/RAM: AMD athlon XP 1700+ (OCed at 1.57 GHz) / 512MB DR OCZ @ 8 ns
-sound card: Sound Blaster Live! Value 5.1
-Video Card: GForce 3 Ti-200 64 DDR
-OS: Windows XP Service Pack 2
-DirectX: 9.0C
-Winamp version: 5.2
-insiltation type: full
- donno if i chose seperate or shared in the instilation... but im the only user on this computer.

thanks

Could you post a HijackThis log as well? (see system specs link above for instructions)
It may give a clue.

However, if it's a unicode issue after all, I don't think I'll be able to help you. Winamp doesn't fully support unicode (although it is being worked on).

Anyone else ideas?

(Do note that 5.21 is the latest version, not 5.2. Although I doubt it'll fix your issue, you could try a clean install of that version.)
