Winamp install error
Winamp seems to fail every time I try to install, regardless of version or any other programs I'm running.
Winamp was installed before, and upon startup it had some error message, so I uninstalled and attempted to reinstall... http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...tall_error.jpg Even if I hit "Ignore" it will pop up the same message for almost every other file in the install. I can't seem to install any version of winamp now! Even really old ones, like version 2-something. System Specs: AMD Athlon XP Processor 2800+ 1.60Ghz, 768 MB RAM Wireless internet connection (always connected) Windows XP, Service Pack 2 Microsoft Internet Explorer |
Abort/Cancel the installer.
Right-click a blank space on the Windows Taskbar and select "Task Manager" Then click on the Processes tab Hi-lite any winamp.exe process in the list and click "End Process". Now try to install Winamp again. "upon startup it had some error message" If the problem persists, please tell us the exact error message. |
I don't have any Winamp processes running while trying to install.
As for the original error message, I can't recite it exactly back to you (because I didn't think it would stick around like this). It was about a read-only file, and a reading error. Something about unable to read winamp.exe, sorry I can't be more specific. |
Ok, so make sure no files in the Winamp folder have the read-only attribute.
Right-click the Winamp folder, select Properties, uncheck Read-Only, Click Apply Checkmark "apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" Click OK Try to install Winamp again. |
There was a Read-only attribute checked for the Winamp folder, and I unchecked it, but it still doesn't work.
Same problem as before. |
So... no files in the Winamp folder/subfolders are read-only, and there's no winamp.exe process running. Hmm... those are the only two known causes for that particular error.... other than if you're maybe trying to install Winamp on a limited user profile (as opposed to an admin profile) with no write priveleges (which seems highly unlikely to me).
Does it persist even after a reboot? What other processes are running? Maybe a HijackThis log might show something? http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#specs |
I checked around for spyware or malware and my system's clean. Persists after a reboot and everything.
One thing I did notice was the Winamp folder (in Program Files) insists on staying in "read-only". I'll uncheck the "read-only" box, apply to all folders and files, hit "apply".. then check again, and it's in "read-only" mode. I'm not entirely sure why, nor how to fix it. |
Yeah, that's normal. It's the same for me. All folders have the read-only attribute under WinXP.
I wasn't implying that you had any malware, but maybe the HJT log will show us if there's any other legit process running which might be responsible for locking the files in the winamp folder. The only other thing I can suggest is that you try installing to a different folder. If needs be, you can always copy over settings/library database/bookmarks/etc afterwards. |

Here's a log of the hijackthis scan, if it can tell you anything.
If this doesn't work, I'll just install Winamp to a different folder. |
