Afghanistan man faces execution for religious convertion

Afghanistan says court to decide fate of convert
Quote:

An Afghan judge said this week a man named Abdur Rahman had been jailed for converting from Islam to Christianity and could face the death penalty if he refused to become a Muslim again.

Sharia, or Islamic law, stipulates death for apostasy. The Afghan legal system is based on a mix of civil and sharia law.

Rahman, 40, has not been formally charged yet.

He told a judge at a preliminary hearing last week he became a Christian while working for an aid group helping Afghan refugees in Pakistan 15 years ago.

"I'm not an apostate. I'm obedient to God but I'm a Christian, that's my choice," Rahman told the hearing.
WTF? what the hell kind of puppet government did we set up there?

A democratic one ;)

Hopefully all this nonsense will get better in time, but there's little intervention we can do to force it better immediately. Unfortunately.

Our democratic history hasn't always been really sweet either. Democracy is just better than the alternatives, not ideal. It gives the best standard of living we've been able to come up with yet.

The best government would be none at all, but we all don't get along that well. Actually we aren't really a democracy at all, we're a constitutional republics mostly.

We can't all decide that it's a good idea to descriminate against zootm :)

Again, though, there's not a lot we can do to force people to adopt our model. In particular, attempting to get a constitution which specifically supercedes religious authority would be pretty difficult.

Sure there is zoot, we can arm the ones we like, and someone else will arm the ones they like, then when they get tired of shooting at each other, they have something to shoot at us.

I give you Afghanistan in a nutshell. For that matter Iran, Iraq, Cuba, Angola, Vietnam... sheesh....

The only ones that can build snakes for our little garden of eden is US, Europe, China, Russia, the Israelis a little, and South Africa a little.

The truth is that we've been in a continous state of war for a century, we just haven't actually done our own fighting since WWII. War by proxy.

I think you're agreeing with me. There's little I can argue with in that post.

Not that that's a bad thing, it's just not what I'm used to!

Case Dropped Against Afghan Christian

http://abcnews.go.com

zootm 26th March 2006 15:23

I wonder if it was genuinely lack of evidence?

rockouthippie 26th March 2006 15:32

There is hope.

Is Lord of War any good?. I haven't seen it.

Mattress 26th March 2006 15:47

that article is confusingly written. first it says the case was dropped and then goes on to tell how he was moved to a maximum security prison.

huh?

Eh, maybe it's dismissed. Looks like they needed max security to keep the other prisoners from killing him.

I understand that another culture's beliefs may seem strange or even wierd, but this story takes the cake:

Quote:

A Muslim couple in India has been told by local Islamic leaders to separate after the husband “divorced” his wife in his sleep, the Press Trust of India reported.

Sohela Ansari told friends that her husband, Aftab, had uttered the word “talaq,” or divorce, three times in his sleep, according to the report published in newspapers on Monday.

...

The religious leaders ruled that if the couple wanted to remarry they would have to wait at least 100 days. Sohela would also have to spend a night with another man and be divorced by him in turn.
So she has to sleep around to make sure she's good enough for him or what? :igor:

They put people in Pakistan to death for this all the time.
