IPOD trouble after upgrading to 5.21

I had my IPOD plugged in when I upgraded to 5.21 Winamp, and it got reformatted and all the music was erased. Now the IPOD isn't recognized by Winamp at all, and I can't load any music into it. It is recognized by the PC, just not Winamp. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling and even installing the older version of Winamp with the separate plugin, but it still doesn't work.

any suggestions?

easy fix

the problem you will most likely have is that you had a previous version of winamp with the ipod plugin. when you upgrade to the 5.21 version, it already has the ipod support built in, so there is a conflict.

i would suggest unistalling the ipod plug-in from the the media library plug-ins under the plug-ins menu in preferences. then uninstall winamp completely, and then install the 5.21 version completely cleanly. when you hook up your ipod, it will ask if you want to restart the computer when it installs the drivers. click "do not restart now" and this should work.

for some reason, when you do restart, it resets the ipod completely, and it usually does not show up in winamp, and when you try adding music, it just formats the ipod. don't know why, but i had this problem, and the above suggestions helped me out.

one more thing

you may have to also go into 'my computer' and right click on the drive referring to your ipod. click properties, and go to where there is driver information, and uninstall the driver pertaining to your ipod, this way windows will install it over again when you plug it in the first time, and winamp should recognize it.

do like so

1. uninstall ml_ipod

2. reinstall winamp with the portable feature.

3. run winamp and then plug in your ipod

temporary fix

I have also had problems with my IPOD after upgrading. I especially enjoy the drag and drop feature which was suddenly not available. I can't say I recommend the following quick fix, but it might work for someone. Since I just wanted to get the drag and drop functionality back fast, so I could listen to a networking course in the car, I uninstalled the new Portable Device Sync plugin from Preferences\Plug-ins\General Purpose. After installing the original ml_ipod.exe plugin my WinAmp 5.21 Pro mostly works... Except if you unplug the Ipod and reattach it without restarting WinAmp you will see several copies of your playlist entries in the Media Library – until you restart WinAmp. I hope nullsoft comes up with an update soon that will include all of the functionality - it is a bit strange to add a feature with so much commotion that does less then a third party plugin... Of course those with various other devices might not share my view :)
