Alrighty, did a lazy-ass search to see if there was a previous thread on this subject.

I do love the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt" and the White Stripes version of "Jolene". Also the The Get-Up Kids' version of "Alec Eiffel" is a lot of fun, if very by-the-numbers.
|
Ha, everyone saying crazy got me thinking. Crazy done by The Kidneythieves. Original from Patsy Cline.

This would certainly get my vote. And, of course, Johnny Cash's version of Hurt, as already mentioned by Cylob, siebe83, and zootm. Funny, would you believe that some people actually believe Nine Inch Nails covered this song? :igor: |
Velvet Revolver - Money (Pink Floyd)

I Did It Again (Britney Spears) :D There's also a couple other cover songs I'd like to hear, such as Trivium covering Metallica's "Master of Puppets" and The Haunted covering Slayer's "Raining Blood"... :D |
Both the Pizzicato Five and Polysics versions of Good (original by The Plastics).
|
Well, Trivium put up their Metallica cover song of "Master of Puppets" on their Myspace profile and hoooooly shiiiiiit is this just too friggin' awsome! :D
Real test of a cover song is how well they execute the solo... [edit]Every note and whammy, plus a little improv to put their own stamp on the song... This is a cover song :D [/edit] |
lol @ Jones v. Shy. :)

In any case, here's a few I can think of (original artist in parentheses): The B-52's - Downtown (Petula Clark) Cake - Sad Songs and Waltzes (Willie Nelson) Les Claypool's Frog Brigade - Animals* (Pink Floyd) Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan) Dresden Dolls - War Pigs (Black Sabbath)** Jeff Beck - Going Down (Moloch) Jerry Garcia Band - I've got a 2 disc live set that's all cover tunes. Too many to list but they're all fantastic. Especially the Bob Dylan and Beatles tracks Liz Phair - Turning Japanese (The Vapors) Yes - America (Simon & Garfunkel) They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (Not Constantinople) (The Four Lads) * entire album performed live and released as a CD ** mainstay of their last tour. thay haven't done a studio cover |
Hehe, speaking of covered whole albums:
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P...2.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Their reworkings of Life Is Life (Opus) and One Vision (Queen) on the Opus Dei album are even better though. |
Re: Cover Songs
I came across this cover of INXS by an up and coming band called Article A the other day....check it out
Article A "Don't Change" (INXS): vista.streamguys.com/jspiewak/articlea_change.wma (just copy into your browser and windows media with open the stream) http://www.rockridgemusic.com/assets/articlea_cover.jpg If you like what you hear, there's also an original song of theirs that you can download for free at rockridgefree.com for a limited time |
Presidents of the United States of America - Video Killed the Radio Star (Buggles)
George Thorogood - Move It On Over (Hank Williams) NOFX - Vincent (Don MacLean) Placebo - Bigmouth Strikes Again (The Smiths) Queens of the Stone Age - Christian Brothers (Elliott Smith) |
Pink Floyd ~ Money
|
John Mayer - SOS (The Police - Message in a bottle)
|
Elliott Smith - Trouble (Cat Stevens)
Warren Zevon - Knocking on Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan) |
Here's some from an old cover list I've used:
Hey Jude - The Beatles Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen Kashmir - Led Zeppelin Barracuda - Heart Tell All the People - The Doors Beautiful Day - U2 China Grove - the Doobie Brothers Stop Draggin My Heart Around - Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty Panama - Van Halen Good Vibrations - the Beach Boys Mississippi Queen - Mountain Long Time - Boston Get Back - the Beatles Jean Genie - Bowie Ziggy Stardust - Bowie Let's Dance - Bowie Hotel California - Eagles Long Run - Eagles Outlaw Pete - Springsteen Surfing with the Alien - Satriani Don't Fear the Reaper - BOC Close to The Edge - Yes Cool #9 - Satriani Borg Sex - Satriani No Woman, No Cry - Marley Could You Be Loved - Marley Picked for being half assed easy to play and half assed cool. I'm not sure how many actually were on a cover. |
I love 'yard of blonde girls'- originally sung by Jeff Buckley. Sadly don't actially know who covered it!
And on that not love Buckley's version of Cohen's 'Hallelujah'. Beautiful. |
First, I'm sorry to be the holder of the less popular opinion, but Cash's Hurt annoys me. I just can't find a way to like it, no matter what angle I take when listening to it (I did like the originals though).
Oakenfold's Braveheart Theme Sublime's Summertime (it's ok at least) Red Hot Chili Pepper's Fire (originally Hendrix) Bangles' Hazy Shade of Winter (Shut up. You know you agree.) Probably more, but I'm too tired for now. |
Ahh, funny as hell...
Barenaked Ladies - Gin n' Juice (originally Snoop Dogg) A New Found Glory - Back That Ass Up (originally Juvenile) Both very, very well done. I'm impressed. |
Quote:
really, what next? Hoobastank? :p |
heh... hoobastank... I actually did sound with their sound guy for one of their concerts at my college...
It was easy money, although they still kinda sucked. As far as the Barenaked Ladies - I don't really like their stuff, but I must say their take on the Snoop Dogg song gave me a good laugh. |
Voivod - Astronomy Domine
Big Black - He's a Whore (especially the mellow version they did for a compilation) NoMeansNo - Bitches Brew Robert Wyatt - At Last I am Free Coil - Tainted Love |
