IPTV over Wi-fi
Did you heard about IPTV OVER wi-fi ? does it work well?
Regards |
Perhaps.
(A vague answer for a vague question) |
I've watched GBS.tv on my laptop several times.
IPTV however is supposed to be like 5034903 MEGABYTES PER SECOND so i'm sure that won't work. |

Inedible Bulk I've watched GBS.tv on my laptop several times.
IPTV however is supposed to be like 5034903 MEGABYTES PER SECOND so i'm sure that won't work. R F energy.... and you can cook with it to.....but i try the microwave... better sheilding.....spelling john http://24.128.133.243:8000/listen.pls R O C K N T V 1 PS REAL TV is not limited by internet broadcaster bandwith constraints ie. upload ability and the veiwers download caps also it takes machine horse power 2 decode.... the more the compression the more cpu required.. vp6 is pretty rugged on a machine of less tha 500 mhgs cpu as it must also run the nic and diplay the vid.... for this reason i have been cosidering going back to vp3 .. not so much for the mac users but because not everyone has good equiptment.......any insight???.. john |
How many poeple have a computer slower than 500MHz, these days?
|
multitudes i think
soon to come ..... video of my equiptment i must be apack rat but junkyard and closet crapola abounds... i cant throw em out 450mhg amp 1995vin scuzzi drvs no vid no sound werks great 4 shout cast servers....... seems the most intensive part of streaming pre encode stuff is the load up...all hard drv =========================================================== i imagin the people still useing dial up are the last to upgrade ther hard ware........... i am still finding it nessesary to cater to a wide spec. of veiwsers john ps ken du youthink i should even consider going back to vp3 ... the mach ine behide my drumset has these issues..does audio fine also to reaquire the mac users as my listener ship has plumated since the media list changes... not bitchin..... jus werkin |
MAYBE ONE DAY YOU WILL FIND MAVIS BEACON TEACHES THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (AND ALSO TYPING) IN YOUR PILES OF STUFF
I HOPE THAT DAY IS SOON |
I was fiddling around with a usb stick (54 mbps) wifi a while back. I found that I could xmit vlc with the USB stick over a wifi link with no problems at all.
I bought 4 DSS dishes at a swap meet for cheap and sold the LNBs from them on ebay for a profit. I still have the dishes themselves and was thinking that I could use them for a wok-fi setup. With proper engineering, I think that I could take a usb stick mounted where the LNB used to be (with the right spacing for 2.5 Ghz). Range should be a couple of miles, so I was thinking that I could send vlc/and or shoutcast TV transmissions at several megabits for at least the length of my street. http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Airport/P...Primestar.html Sort of the same idea as this. |
rockouthippie: I've seen people mount those USB dongles to dishes and report success, so it is possible.

Extending a Wifi link like that would be out of the question for TCP / unicast data stream. ( Unless both the base station and the client had adapted Wifi link antennas. )
However this set up would be ideal for long distance IP Multicast streaming. You can also adjust the polarity of the RF pattern to sustain a adequate signal to noise ratio for long distance data transmission. Surrounding buildings, trees or large structures can substantially degrade the signal quality. Weather ( Such as fog, rain or snow ) can also degrade the signal quality. ) Quote:
WiFi antenna said to boost range to 3 miles http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/07/w...ge-to-3-miles/ |

I am a little concerned that using a sat dish could exceed the FCC effective radiated power limitation. Multicasting using vlc should be possible, but I haven't tried it. 54 megabits would be pretty hefty even with unicasting. My experiment was that I used a usb stick with no wireless router to send video from one computer to another and to forward the internet via a proxy server (ad hoc mode). Worked fine. I could see no reason why multicasting using such a setup would be any problem..... unless you were using a wireless router... I dunno if those could multicast?. Anybody know anything about using APs to do multicasting?. |
Incorporating a directional antenna does increases the ERP ( Effective Radiated Power - www.atis.org/tg2k/_effective_radiated_power.html ) of a transmitter, however, a increase in ERP for the transmitter does not automatically improve the signal to noise ratio for the reciever attempting to gather RF data from a very distant source.
Wave distortion, poor electrical grounding and high ambient electrical noise can negatively affect RF transmission, especially in the Microwave portion of the Radio Frequency spectrum. |
How do you figure?. Whatever the noise level is is what it is. Increasing the signal, increases the signal to noise ratio. And of course the noise immunity of the gain antenna is also improved, because the gain is not just in the sending direction.
A 12 db pringles can should about triple the range to any device in the beam. |
YES, you can streamcast over wifi
I have found that wifi streaming is working fine on more than one of our servers on campus and in our mobile servers installed in our cars... We have been casting for over two years here in san diego and the only lag we had was before we upgraded our machines. Eversince we added 308g/3g router-boosters around campus and town we have been able to get connections with a standard wifi card with the same bandwith as a typical router-modem from home. Also, was able to get feeds to out PDAs and even pocket PCs. Check our san diego computer club's BB for the NSV stream patch. We are not allowed to give a link publically until approval from the copyright holders ofcourse.
oh and the trick was to run the HDTV converter software through your NSV server and configure an address or link for your stream. From that point you can control your your cable connection from IP-remote. thus we watch cable and satelite on our lap-tops and PDAs. I don't know if it works on phones though. Since we haven't tested it for 3g. But it should, if it doesn't get an old ipaq and config it for local wifi connection WAN. and sttream from any wifi hotspot. |
