shakey_snake 26th April 2006 15:37

my iPod plays Doom.

I win.

LuigiHann 26th April 2006 16:00

My icon plays Wolfenstien 3D. You lose.

I don't have an iPod, I'm thinking of getting some sort of thing to play music and videos on my DS or my SP, but in general I don't listen to music enough for either to be cost-effective.

This looks like a pretty good deal, but I don't have or know anything about any SD-cards, so I'm not sure how much good it would do me.

See, this is what I really want, but that's definately not cost-effective. Hopefully I'll stumble across one on clearance someday.

Wow. I'd pick that up if it cost less than my DS is worth.

protegechris 26th April 2006 23:09

peeee essss peeee
I can get one at gamexchange here for $110 now ;)

ScorLibran 26th April 2006 23:35

I'd have to recommend the DS over the PSP. But it depends on how important portability is for you.

The Death Star is certainly the more powerful of the two (can the PSP destroy planets?), but it will NOT fit into your pocket. And it'll probably cost a bit more than the PSP.

LuigiHann 26th April 2006 23:39

Yeah, but is the Death Star a viable alternative to photoshop? I'd argue that it is not.

ScorLibran 26th April 2006 23:55

That depends on your requirements.

For blowing up planets you need the Death Star - but it sucks at image editing. Photoshop is great for image editing, but it's VERY hard to blow up a planet with it.

But, you can blow up the internet with photoshop, and it's kinda like its own planet.

One of my brother's friends gave him a DS today (free, I don't know why :p). I've been playing with it for a bit, I can already see one problem.. We have Splinter Cell and Snowboard kids. Splinter cell, you sneak with the touch screen, and using the stylus was difficult, because I'm left handed. Graphics don't really impress me and it looks like an SP with a chat program to me.

PSP it is :)

edit: I played for 20 minutes and had to take tylenol because the weird hand position on the DS made my hand hurt where I had broken it. meh.

LuigiHann 2nd May 2006 22:40

Note: Both of those games suck.
Most of the better DS games have options for left-handed people, allowing you to use the ABXY buttons as a D-pad so you can use the left hand for the stylys.

Try some good games before you make your final decision :)
8.0-8.9
9.0-9.5

protegechris 2nd May 2006 22:41

Note: not when you didn't have to pay for them. :)

A free thing that sucks still sucks, man. Why do you think people on the internet complain so much?

Omit Name 3rd May 2006 05:33

use the little thumb thingy on the ds strap on games that dont need you to be super percise. you can use either hand really. and ya teh ds would hurt my hands alot before i finally got used to it now that ive been playing sk8 land a whole lot. i found that if you hold the thing like this:

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/3026/untitled6fx.jpg

your hands will hurt a whole lot more than if you hold it like this:

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/2042/untitled11hy.jpg

well it works for me anyway. but i have rather big hands.

any way try more games. rent a bunch of them. play metroid / mario kart online and stuff.

any way were sorry for making a big fuss about something you were hoping would distract you from fuss. but well you see alot of people see the psp as more fuss so by protecting you from that fuss then with this fuss now... well its complicated you see.

Phyltre 3rd May 2006 06:19

So you advise cutting off one's fingers to make the DS more comfortable?

LuigiHann 3rd May 2006 06:46

No, I think he means to use giant cherries and/or candy apples instead of using your hands.

Omit Name 3rd May 2006 23:58

u dissing me paint skillz yo?

protegechris 4th May 2006 01:39

I just paid for a PSP. I'll consider investing in a DS lite when it comes out in the U.S. I got a good deal anyhow..

$230 shipped :)

Psythik 4th May 2006 04:19

Lucky bastard.

Just curious, what firmware ver. did your PSP come with?

protegechris 4th May 2006 04:24

2.6, I'm not into emulators so doesn't matter if I can run homebrew or not :D

Psythik 4th May 2006 04:25

Oh ok, cuz I was about to warn you not to upgrade to v2.7 if you were interested in emulation. :) And if you were lucky enough to have v2.0 then you could listen to SHOUTcast streams on it through a homebrew media player.

SSJ4 Gogitta 4th May 2006 04:31

Appleseed is a good movie, though I didn't care too much for the animation style. Get Katsuhiro Otomo's Steamboy if you can find it, it's great (he did Akira).

http://img467.imageshack.us/img467/8997/dvds7fb.th.jpg

protegechris 4th May 2006 04:34

Only things I'd be interesting in emulating..meh. Off the top of my head I can't really even think of anything, sadly.

So 2.6 can run homebrew and/or be downgraded to? Cool.

2.7 doesn't have enough crap added to be worth the trouble of upgrading anyhow :)

edit: I've never really been into the animation stuff.. If I happen to think appleseed is good I'll grab that movie. I'm going to see how much 2GB produo cards are at the gameXchange here.. if it's not too much more than ebay I'll use my store credit on one.. plus the movie and some other crap if possible ;)

Psythik 4th May 2006 04:37

v2.6 cannot be downgraded (yet) but currently is the latest version that can run (most) homebrew and all emulators. I believe v2.0 and v1.5 are the only versions that can run ALL homebrew (including that media player I mentioned in my previous post). v2.0 is (currently) the only version that can be downgraded.

All v2.7 really does is disable all exploits that allow you to run homebrew. Oh, and it adds really slow and crappy flash support to its Web Browser.

SSJ4 Gogitta 4th May 2006 04:41

so in short: Don't upgrade to 2.7, keep 2.6...

Psythik 4th May 2006 04:46

Yes, at least until a new exploit is found for v2.7.

Currently, there are no games that require v2.7 (and I don't think there will be for awhile), therefore, it would be pointless to upgrade right now, in case you change your mind about homebrew.

protegechris 5th May 2006 01:09

Psythik.. you seem to know, so I was wondering..

How do I go about getting PSP-Radio and something else.. the infrared remote feature? I'd like to freak out the classroom on the last day of school this year ;)

protegechris 10th May 2006 03:30

They had SteamBoy at GameXchange here, three copies of it, actually. I didn't see it till I was on my way out so I'll get it next time I go in.

This afternoon I bought:
Ridge Racer
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
Need For Speed Underground Rivals

and movies..
Jarhead, Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story

Got all that (3 games, 2 movies) for $105 :D

Tomorrow morning, UPS delivers my lovely PSP.

Well I've actually never heard of this infared remote feature before. I'll do some research and testing on it and tell you what I come up with.

protegechris 10th May 2006 04:30

I looked around and found PSP radio eventually. I ordered a 2GB card yesterday, when I get it I'll start messing with it.

InvisableMan 10th May 2006 06:51

I've had my PSP for awhile now and there isn't a day when I am not playing it. If I had more cash, I'd definately have a bunch more PSP movies than I have now (Limited to FF: Advent Children and Full Metal Jacket.. Nothing like R. Lee on your PSP!) and the import games are great. The two games I play the most are Star Wars Battlefront 2 and a import from japan, Naruttimate Portable.

I use it to surf the web, check my mail (works great with gmail) right now I have 2.7, which supports flash, which is always fun. I don't care too much about emulation anyways.

protegechris 10th May 2006 07:14

Good to hear another person praising it. Personally, I get pissed off to have to load up my laptop and sit on my bed to check my email when my desktops are being used by other family members.

The majority of video I watch will be on my 2gig memory stick, *but* at only $10 per used UMD movie here, I'm sure I'll pick up a few more soon enough.

InvisableMan 10th May 2006 20:26

I use it for music and stuff sometimes too.

cooky560 10th May 2006 21:45

i love my PSP i use it with the 1 gig memory stick as a media player / browser at college, and play games on the route to and from :)

protegechris 10th May 2006 22:14

I've been messing with it today.. I got a value pack, 5 games, 1 movie, 2x 32mb mem sticks, 2 sony batteries, and a logitech playgear pocket for $220. Awesome. Not one scratch.

I'm loving SOCOM ;) I'm about to sit down and play GTA:LCS. Sweet.

protegechris 10th May 2006 22:59

test posting from my PSP woot

InvisableMan 12th May 2006 22:19

Here's a little tip I didn't realize untill just recently. If it's in your version of the firmware, you should be able to go to the browser menu and change the display to something else to make alot of the pages look better. It's under view.

LuigiHann 13th May 2006 01:11

I forgot to calculate "used" prices into my argument. I think I will buy a PSP... in a few years.

protegechris 13th May 2006 01:32

Or get a killer deal ;) DS games here run 20-30 bucks used at gamexchange :(
