Xerxes 10th October 2000 04:14

Tell me your thoughts of Winamp 3...

What kinda skin plan on doing first?

Are you scared at all at taking the leap
into freeform?

etc etc. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

In awnser to my own questions-
I plan on doing "Luxor 3" and then
go down the line re-doing all of my
culture skins. And YES, i'm frickin
scared that I might not be able to
handle freeform skinning... heck I
admit that I can't do transparancies
very well... I really hope they
keep it easy and somewhat intuitive http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thats what drew me to winamp skinning
in teh 1st place. I'll tell you what-
if they make a "Skin love - Technical Support" board when w 3 comes out the mods
will definately have their work cut out
for them.

Zeruel 10th October 2000 05:31

I dunno. I try not to think about it.

Jayn 10th October 2000 05:32

I admit the term "freeform skinning" is a bit intimidating to me....just because I've never done it. But learning to skin at all was a bit intimidating too. But, I have great faith in our little Winamp "skinning neighborhood", that if I should have a stupid question (yes...you should all be getting used to them by now http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif ) I know everyone here is very helpful to one another! And, we'll all be learning about skinning Winamp 3 at the same time....I think it'll be fun!! http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

And Tech Support - Skins....is coming!! Yay! http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Actually, it sounds not-so-cool for us image-skinners, opposed to your texture-type skinners. Ya know?

It doesn't sound too good at all.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot here...but doesn't freeform give you the ability to "shift" things around a bit? If so, you could do a little shifting to get buttons and things off of your images, and still keep the functionality of the controls. Or am I waaaay off here? http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif If I am, could someone please explain freeform to me a bit?

cappy17 10th October 2000 07:50

No, no, Jayn, your question isn't stupid. Zeruel, I think she's helping us think about freeform in a new way.

I tend to be a picture skinner too, and this "stretchable textures" thing sounds like a bum deal to us fixed-bitmap types. But maybe... maybe it means we can keep controls *off* of the important bits. And I suppose a textured frame could be placed around the bitmap for growing purposes...

Hey, I'm a little less afraid (that's one shade less than terrified, Xerxes). Maybe if you all stick with me, I'll get through this Winamp 3 thing.

Ofcourse, my biggest fear is that I'll never actually finish a v2 skin before Winamp 3 is released. Must get cracking... http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/mad.gif

I am going to have a hell of a time doing
a meaningful cultural motif if its just
textures.

I am thinking there will a "large" mode
and then a "minimized" mode. THe minimized
will be texture, the large will be pic.
My best guess anyway...

well WA3 is a consern. i may even have to drop my winamp support it it doesnt jive right and it gets turned in to a musical ICQ or somehting. i knwo u know what i'm talking about.

what i'll do when i get it is check outit's skining capabilities...get a feel for it in general. if i approve then i'll jump into making a nice skin template....ooh...that'll be nice...maybe i'll be nice this time and make it public too.....but one i have that i'll try to do somehting as far fetched from teh base WA3 skin as i can ...i hope that teh first 10 winamp skins released are all VERY different so it sets a precident for originality here. i'd have the first 10 to be the same, just different colours or some shit.

quote:
This is a copy of what I emailed Denny today:
The more dedicated skinners are worried that their textured skins will be ruined because of the resizability. Do you know if there are going to be, for example, 3 set sizes to skin ala. Sonique, or will they be fully resizable. If it's the latter, will the skinners be able to specify the shape the player will take when their skin is loaded?

Etc etc etc, you get the idea.

Cheers,

The corollary to the WA3 question is:

Will Version 2 skins load into WA3?

Freeform.

Snowboarding? Brrrrr......cool idea Chev! http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/wink.gif

Cappy....from what it says on the WA 3 beta news...it sounds as if WA 2 skins won't work on the inital release of WA 3. But they are working on backwards compatibility so that our WA 2 skins will work on a later version of WA 3. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

from my understanding 2.0 will not be compatible with 3.0 (at least not off the bat....althought it might be possible to integrate a little later) since it is a whole new build.

iomegajaz 11th October 2000 11:01

Here's the official word to the wise from the wiser:
quote:
Denny wrote:
Sup Jaz,
Each component (main window, playlist editor, equalizer) will have their
own layout file associated with it. That file can be messed with to your
heart's content. If you want a skin layout that is 2800x2000 pixels,
unresizable, with one big ass button, so be it. The winamp 2-style gui will
always be there, as a set standard.

WOOHOO! This means it'll be 2.x compatible http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Thank god. OK, I'm less scared now. Hehe. http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Raj 11th October 2000 18:37

nah...this still has me worried. it means skins will be like other freeform skin things (ie sonique) where theres to much "globs of art" and not enough interface sculpture and design (ie thek TACK on an image which is half the size of the rest of the interface...just for "Art"'s sake and not for good interface design.

ampburner 12th October 2000 21:41

I think you got a point there Raj, I mean, finding the balance between functionality and aesthetic is what makes skinning fun. At least to me it is...

Raj 13th October 2000 04:21

well all i knwo is that if it's freeform a la sonique or even Kjolfol is...then look for my skins to be relatively compact and straight-foreward....without much excess interface clutter.

chiquita chad 13th October 2000 04:28

dont you fellers think that free form makes more possibilities...and sweeter results...plus who can make a skinner program that doesnt pump out skins that can easily be slapped with the personality of being skinner made...thus, less skinner made skins and nuthin bu grrrrrrrrreat 5 * skins

love,

cappy17 13th October 2000 05:24

I think Raj has the first lesson to take to heart with the free form skins. Besides, I want my MP3 player to be small -- I have other things going on on my computer! {Insert plug for MikroAmp here, Jayn}

So, I've certainly seen lots of screen shots of Sonique amps. So I downloaded it and some skinning instruction yesterday, the same with Windows Media Player 7. Not, mind you, that I'm going to jump ship, but just to see how they deal with skinning. If I can understand the process (know the enemy), perhaps the possibilities will start blooming...

Mr Jones 13th October 2000 17:16

I'm with you on that one cappy, small is good, the thought of seeing a and i quote "If you want a skin layout that is 2800x2000 pixels, unresizable, with one big ass button, so be it."
fills me with sense of "oh noooooo", like cappy I like mine small, playing mp3's is just a background thing for me and not the sole reason for owning a pc, If I wanna sit looking at a great huge sprawling interface, then I'll swivel around and have a look at my hi-fi stack http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Personally I think scaleability should be fixed, leaving the main winamp one size all around, including playlist, keep it tight and keep it neat,

The prospect of being able to shift buttons around is interesting, as someone who has done a few image based skins, for my own use, and for other people, how many time have you had to comprimise the image because of a button?, does that eject button fall right on the most important part of your image?, have u had to shrink your image so small to avoid any button collisions?, hopefully the moving buttons bit will help, but having said that, scaleability will screw your image anyhow LOL, specialy if we are using the old tile method to do it.

Another point to note, is everyone gonna totaly abandon skinning 2.x altogether??, i only ask because do you think that the whole winamp community around the world is gonna change overnight to 3.x?, i doubt it, im sure there will still be a massive market for 2.x skins out there, dont u think?

Back to the day job http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Xerxes 13th October 2000 17:26

It won't stop completely i'm sure... as long as sknner.exe remains there will always be someone using the 2.x format for their own reason. But I do definetely believe that the
2.x skin flow will be reduced to a tiny trickle compared to what it once was.

Also, I think the freeform skins require a
lot of work- meaning that these will come
out a at a bit slower rate than 2.x skins.

MountianMan 3rd November 2000 23:07

I think free form will be a good thing. you can make it asteticly pleasing and more functional at the same time, it may take more time, but this will lead to people thinking out there skins more and weed out some of the crap.

Zeruel 3rd November 2000 23:48

That's a lot of crap to weed out...

hehehe...

chiquita chad 4th November 2000 04:47

a whoke lotta crap to weed out...we could use it all to fertilize all the ch-ch-ch-chia pets in the world!

You see, my brother made it in life, he sells windmills to minature golf courses.
But i'm just pushing buttons like a freakin chimpanzee.
I wanna dance.
I'm gonna be a dancer.

Raj 4th November 2000 17:37

i was about to explore that at 1 point but i found sonique a bit to inneficient and buggy and lacks some features i like from winamp. i didnt like its interface and stuff.
