Music slows down, crackles when typing

Hi,

First I'd like to point out that I have found a similar topic here (link), but it seems to have gone a bit off topic.

I've tried all of the solutions posted there (including the ones in the topic which it refers to) and none of them seem to have solved the problem.

What happens is that quite often when I'm playing music in winamp (and in winamp only), it crackles and slows down whenever I use the keyboard. The only solution is then to reset the computer (and I seem to remember times where the first reset didn't do it).
I've been unable to specifically recreate the problem. Sometimes it'll come after 2 minutes, sometimes after hours, and sometimes not at all even after having run heavy progs such as games, photoshop and the likes.
Afaik, it only concerns MP3s, but I don't have any Wavs or anything else on hand to test.

My system specs are:
Winamp (latest 5.2)
Windows XP SP2 + Direct X 9.0c
Clean system (no spyware / viruses reported)
Athlon XP 2800 / 1gig PC3200 RAM
ABIT NF7-S Motherboard with Nforce 2.0 chip
M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 with latest drivers
GeForce 7800 GS

Any help getting rid of this very annoying problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Type up a list of your processes running and post em for me to see please

Gorghor 6th May 2006 03:01

Well as I said, this can happen at any time, and has been happening for several months as far as I can remember.
But if it helps you:

alg.exe
iexplore.exe
explorer.exe
rundll32.exe
type32.exe
ashDisp.exe (antivirus)
ashWebSv.exe ''
ashMaiSv.exe ''
ashSrv.exe
svchost.exe *6
winamp.exe
lsass.exe
nvscv32.exe
sdmcp.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
spoolsv.exe
System
System Idle Process
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe
deltray.exe (soundcard panel)

Stop using internet explorer, it is total crap. Get Mozilla Firefox.

And try getting rid of Type32.exe unless you have a keyboard with extra buttons on it.

Also, go to Start/Run/ Type in Msconfig go to the startup tab and tell me what is listed there

A HJT log would be simpler... ;-)

Also make sure all your (hard/cd) drives are running in DMA mode (not PIO mode)
c/o Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > Primary/Secondary IDE Channels > Properties > Advanced

and also let us know if any other devices are sharing IRQ with the sound card.

Confirm a clean install of Winamp 5.21 with no 3rd-party plugins.

A dxdiag log might also prove useful.

That's what I figured... heheh.

All hard drives are running in DMA mode. There's no IRQ conflicts with the sound board.
Winamp 5.2 has been clean installed, from scratch with no extra plugins.
As far as Type32.exe is concerned, yeah my keyboard is one with extra features on it.

Here is the HJT log and attached is the DXDIAG.txt

The attachement didn't seem to work... Here it is.

Hmm, I think it's just a driver-related issue.
You say you've got the latest M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 drivers...
but your dxdiag log says they're v5.10.000.5046 (5/28/2004)
whereas I can see newer versions available here (v5.10.0000.5051 - 05/04/2005):

Oops, indeed...
I'll try that out, but as I mentioned, the problem may not show up again for a few days, so if you think of anything else, please notify me.

Thanks for your help so far!

DJ Egg 6th May 2006 17:04

Well, you could try disabling a few non-essential (potentially resource-hogging) startup items, such as QuickTime Task and TkBellExe (though those two have a nasty habit of re-enabling themselves whenever you restart QuickTime and Real Players), and you could also try adding Winamp (winamp.exe / winamp folder) to the exclusions in Stardock/Windows Blinds and Avast realtime scanner...

But yeah, try updating to the latest drivers first.
