Playlist Skipping Bug Reported?

A problem with playlists skipping songs (while not in shuffle mode) was reported over in the tech support forum. The user tried all suggestions (including clean install), and nothing worked. This had started for him when he went to 5.21 I believe. He finally reinstalled an older version (didn't say which) and the problem went away. This is strong evidence of a bug related to 5.2.

He was not the only one to experience this. I also started seeing it in 5.2 (when I finally bought the pro version and was rewarded with twitchy playlists). It still happens in 5.21

I couldn't find this Playlist bug in any of the official 5.21 bugs.

Before I go through the massive data collection needed to report a bug, I wanted to ask if this playlist skipping bug which started in 5.2 is already an officially reported bug.

For me, this doesn't happen every time, but it does happen fairly frequently. A given occurence is not repeatable. If I go back and play the song that the skip happened after, it won't skip, but continue to play the next track as it should.

Can the support team tell me if they already have this on the books?

DJ Egg 7th May 2006 17:48

No, we can't reproduce the problem.

Are the files which are being skipped over drm-protected WMA files by any chance?

stevenq 8th May 2006 22:46

No, none are DRM protected. However, I do have a mix of mp3 and wma files. I have not tried to see if there is any pattern in what type of file was either playing, skipped or skipped to.

I just tried to make it happen and it did! It played the first song, then skipped to #5 in the list. shuffle is off. I played some other songs, then the playlist again. Didn't skip after the first song this time. A true intermittent and non-repeatable problem, the nastiest kind.

In this case when it skipped, the first song was wma, it skipped 3 mp3's and played the 4th mp3. The one after that was wma again. Next time it happens I'll check if there is any similar pattern.

Which thread are you referring to specifically?

More info may help finding the cause:

Just for reference...

skipping songs... just wma

I.e. most reports concern WMA files.
Three users (you included) reported it happened for mp3 files, however none have provided more info about their setup/system (yet).

stevenq 11th May 2006 01:06

It was thread 245067 I was looking at.

I've found a way to reproduce the problem, but I'm pretty sure (not 100%) that it has happened under other condtions.

This is not full system details, but I have HP ZV5120 laptop. XP home (still at SP1 -- I know, you want everybody to apply all the latest updates before reporting. If you won't take a report without sp2, so be it. But it WAS working on sp1 until 5.2)

I can make a playlist skip if I
1. Start up winamp
2. put the laptop in hibernate mode
3. bring laptop out of hibernate mode
4. select a playlist and double click to play.

After the first song it skips to either song 4, 5 or 6 in the 4 times I tried it. It doesn't happen if I do a full reboot.

Like I said, though this seems to make it happen, in the past I believe I remember listening to playlists that went for some time before skipping. It was not always first song of first playlist after a hibernate. But that does seem to make it happen -- I've done it 4 times in a row now.

Demongremlin 12th May 2006 23:55

Yeah I've been having an extremely similiar problem. New with the update 5.21 Pro. If i hit next track everything is normal, but if i let the song end it skips over one and plays the next. It happens everytime. i checked the preferences through and through. The only thing i haven't tried yet is a clean install. I've customized my winamp to no end, and I'm trying to avoid uninstalling it. If it helps i'm playing pure music videos, basically mpg and avis. but it doesn't seem like the file types have anything to do with it.

CorossiNL 19th May 2006 08:24

I think I got the same problem.
Even when I don't have a mix of mp3/wma in my playlist.
Winamp plays the first 2 seconds of a song, and then he skips to another song.
If I'm playing mixed albums (mp3), I disable repeat, crossfading and shuffle.

Then Winamp plays some songs just as normal, but sometime he plays the first seconds of a song then he skip to another track (track #4,5,6 and then 2, as example)

And sometimes Winamp also plays the first second of a song when I'm playing my playlist (shuffle, repeat all, crossfading enabled)

My system specs:
- AMD Athlon 2200+
- 256MB SD-Ram (most of the time more then 100MB free)
- Windows XP Pro SP2
- Winamp version 5.21

If hope I gave enough information ;)
Is it a solution to downgrade to am older Winamp version?
I think I didn't had this problem with an older version

Any 3rd-party plugins installed?
A my_plugins_list and HijackThis log would be useful.

I could try to set the output to WaveOut, but I think I try to install an older version of Winamp version first, because with an older version I didn't had this problem

DJ Egg 19th May 2006 11:14

We're currently looking into a potential issue when playing wma files whilst using a cpu-intensive media library plugin, such as predixis musicmagic or ml_pmp autofill (both included with the default setup). Are you maybe using one of those features at the same time?

[edit] ^this^ issue is now fixed for the next release [/edit]

Other than that, there's quite a few unsupported 3rd-party plugins in your list (ml_ipod, audioscrobbler, ml_transcode, in_cdreader, gen_msn, gen_prs, gen_play_remove), and therefore your bug report isn't valid, unless you can confirm that it happens with a clean install of 5.21 and no 3rd-party plugins.
