Shoutcast DSP Plugin problem - Winamp won't play songs while plugin is active

Hi,

I've been using Shoutcast to broadcast DJ sets and MP3s to friends without any problems for a while, but recently something weird is happening...

When I have the DSP plugin active in Winamp, MP3s will not play; I press the start button and the spectrum analyser and position slider start to move, but I don't hear anything, and then within about a second or two it just stops... the spectrum analyser hangs exactly where it was but it does not seem like Winamp has actually crashed.

The transport buttons all still work, so I can click stop and switch the DSP plugin off, and the MP3s will play fine.

I've found that if I start a song playing first and then open the DSP plugin, the song will continue playing okay, but it appears to slow the system down, and when it gets to the next playlist item the same problem occurs...

I thought perhaps this was similar to the 100% CPU problems described here, but checking CPU usage by pressing ctrl+alt+delete does not show that the CPU usage is getting too high... it does increase to around 20 to 30%, however, which I assume is higher than it should be (on a P4 2.4GHz CPU).

Anyway, I tried the steps described to fix the CPU usage issue: I made sure Webhancer is not installed, and ran Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D to make sure no spyware was installed that might cause this problem. Some spyware was found and removed...

I restarted and tried again but still got the same problem... I even tried a full uninstall and reinstall of both winamp and the plugin, without any luck.

This problem occurs regardless of whether the DNAS server console is running or not, and whether the DSP plugin is connected to it... Changing the encoder also makes no difference.

I'm certain it has something to do with the DSP plugin (I'm using the latest version, 1.9.0) as this only happens when that plugin is selected and active.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? My best guess is that the plugin is conflicting with something, similar to the CPU usage problem.. however, I definitely do not have Webhancer installed, and as far as I can tell my system is free of spyware. Are there any other programs that could cause these problems?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Dan

Hi,

Perhaps a HijackThis log would give some insight...

Didn't notice anything peculiar in your log...

Are you using the latest version of Winamp (5.21) with no third-party plugins?
Do you have problems with other DSP plugins? (if you have installed any...)

Yep, it's definitely the latest version... One of the things I tried was doing a complete uninstall, then downloading the installer again from winamp.com. I then installed the Shoutcast DSP plugin. Other than that, it's the latest version straight 'out of the box', with no other third-party plugins and only the default skins and visualisers etc.

Here's some more info about my specs etc. although I'm not sure if they will shed any light on the problem:

I'm running Windows XP Home SP2
P4 2.4GHz CPU
512MB RAM

My soundcard is an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI card, with the latest drivers installed.

The videocard is an ATI Radeon 7000 VE, using the driver that came with XP (the latest Catalyst drivers cause all kinds of problems and annoying crashes).

I've got DirectX 9.0c installed, and Winamp 5.21 Full installation... I'm pretty sure I chose shared user settings during installation, but I'm not 100% sure. It was the default option anyway I think. My XP user account is the administrator account and the only one that gets used anyway.

I hope that helps...

I really am not sure what's going on there, sorry...
Only thing I can think of at the moment is that some real-time scanner (AVG or Windows Defender) is possibly interfering with the SHOUTcast plugin.

Another thing you could try is these DirectSound output tweaks, you never know...

The problem only occurs when the plugin is active AND a song is playing, or do you notice effects when just the plugin is active as well?

Anyone else ideas?
