Plagiarism? Petty versus RHCPs?

This one might go in breaking news, or music discussion, I dunno. But I heard this analysis and it's pretty convincing-- the Red Hot Chili Peppers almost certainly drew hard and long from Tom Petty's hit circa 1993. Listen for yourself.

"Dani California" versus "Last Dance with Mary Jane"

The Tom Petty clips sound sped up.

Mr_007 26th May 2006 02:58

Wow what a bad news for this band.

cooky560 26th May 2006 03:19

so whats new? bands have been making covers since well... ever

dlichterman 26th May 2006 03:31

Freakishly similar

Smeggle 26th May 2006 09:06

play one note 'A' - how many bands, singers balh blah balh have played that note? Are they all copying? plagarising?

Play three A, D, E - in that order? I can take a truck load of tracks and find similarities across wide ranging genres..

Music plagarism is just bollox imo...

:)

ryan 26th May 2006 09:11

It's only those bits of the songs they're playing that sound similar. The rest of the song is totally different.

cooky560 26th May 2006 10:10

music is always going to contain plagurism because there are limitations on the amount of note combinations that sound good, so plagiriasm after time is gonig to be pretty commonplace

ujay 26th May 2006 11:34

The words may change, but a good tune goes on for ever.

I steal beats and remix stuff on Sonic Foundry Acid Pro all the time, although I don't generally sell it. It's pretty easy to do if you have a day or two to learn the program.

(that's it, I'm getting a new mouse...tired of this double-clicking crap)

xzxzzx 26th May 2006 14:12

OMFG:

Am, G, Dm

Holy shit! JESUS. THAT'S ONLY BEEN USED IN ONE SONG, EVER!

Oops, wait, the Tom Petty song is Am, G, D ...

The "damning evidence" is not horribly weak (they do sound similar), but it's nowhere near "damning evidence".

*tries to find the Mp3 that was really damning evidence of another song pair*

Mattress 26th May 2006 15:58

heh, listen to Amber's Sexual and then listen to T-pop star CoCo's Di Da Di

now that's a rip-off

swingdjted 26th May 2006 19:32

Yes, it's all over,
Superfreak=Can't Touch This, although I think it was used with purchased permission

Mattress 26th May 2006 19:35

sampling is different.

but a chorus of "di da di" vs a chorus of "li da di" I'd say that's a rip off.

zootm 26th May 2006 19:38

Anthony Kiedis used to accuse Mike Patton of ripping him off, so I guess this is "what goes around".

RHCP's earlier stuff is really good, I reckon. They've been putting out some generic rubbish recently though.

Couldn't agree more. I miss the Flea solos and BloodSugarSexMagic album (or anything released before).

rockouthippie 26th May 2006 19:48

Guitar rifts are just that, you'd probably find a lot of songs that use the same rifts, especially with blues. If you can copyright a rift, then we are doomed. Petty probably stole it from someone else.
