cant play avi. formats

To whomever,
For some reason i can play wmv and mpeg, but cannot play avi files. I thought maybe if i got the new winamp maybe it would let me play it, So I got the new winamp version. Unfortunatly it didn't play the video yet again. So then i looked in all the faqs and the most recently asked ?s and still nothing. Then i asked someone else if they had a problem playing that had the same player as me. Turns out he said i needed a Codec. I assume its something to allow the file to play. Ok first off the file plays, but i only get music no video. Yes im sure it has a video too. I tried another video with a avi. format and still plays music, but no video. I think i need a codec or something that supports that file so if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great or tell me what the problem is???and how to fix it???? Any more ?s please ask and ill get back to you asap!!!!

Thank your for answering djegg,
Unfortunatly im not the smartest on the computers or understanding what is going on. And i hate to sound like im lazy but i honestly have no idea what all that meant on that link you gave me. Would it be easier if i simply gave you what i tried to play?? I have the winamp 5.24 version downloaded today august 15 2006. I added no plug ins changed nothing in the opts. Is there a way to do a live chat so you can talk me through this????

We need to know what the video and audio content is inside the AVI container, so we can tell you what codecs/directshow filters to install.

At a guess, install ffdshow and make sure divx and xvid are checkmarked during installation, so ffdshow will be used to decode those formats. Leave the other installation options alone (ie. the defaults should suffice).
