Installed Directx 9.0c, but now can't play anything
 
Yo waup everybod'

Dunno if you can help me out here, I just installed Directx 9.0c to play age of mythology games from stupid Microsoft. However, now I can't play any (ANY as in AVI, WMA, MPG you name it) videos from Winamp, Window Media Player, and VLC!
The funny thing is I can hear the sounds of the video but the video does not appear in the black screen. The progress bar also moves as if it's playing the movie but I am seeing nothing but the black video screen.

I hate microsoft, i mean, who doesn't?

Let's see a MediaInfo log for some of the problem video files, and also tell us what DS Filters Winamp says it's using (via Alt+3) when you try to play said videos.


WinXP already comes with DirectX 9.0c, so I'm not sure why you tried to install it again. Did it actually install, or did it just skip through the installer as though nothing really happened (which would be the expected behaviour)?


Try upgrading ffdshow to the latest version

and if the problem persists, install latest graphics card drivers from nVidia.

The version of ffdshow in your dxdiag log is very old.
Did you try the latest version via the link I provided?

However, Media Info says it's just a standard MPEG1 video with .mp2 audio.
You shouldn't need to install any extra DS Filters for those,
Windows supports MPEG1 by default.

Try re-registering the Windows Decoder by going to:
Start > Run
Type: regsvr32 quartz.dll
Hit Enter


You also didn't tell us what DS Filters Winamp says it's using via View File Info (Alt+3) when you try to play one of the videos.

Did you re-register quartz.dll as instructed in my previous post?

quartz.dll is the DirectX AVI & MPEG Splitters / Decoders.

If the splitter isn't registered properly, then it won't be able to send the contents of the video container (avi / mpg) to their respective decoders (whether ffdshow or other).

Also, goto: start > programs > ffdshow > video decoder config
Codecs page: make sure all of the following are set to 'libavcodec',and not 'disabled':
XviD, DivX 3, Generic MPEG4, DivX 5, Other MPEG4, H.263, H.264, MPEG1, MPEG2

If the problem persists, then you will probably need to reinstall DirectX 9.0c again, and then latest ffdshow again.

If the problem persists after that, then I really aren't sure what's going on. Sorry.
