new user question

if this isn't the right forum for this please let me know

the same .wma songs i have downloaded play on 1 pc but require a license on the other?
play
winamp 5.24
windows media player 8.0
don't play
winamp 5.3
windows media player 9.0

if the song is protected why would one version of the player not be stopped by the protection and the other is stopped from playing?
and this basically means the song i have is not a legal version and either my pc needs a license or other wise be purchased?
after you get a song that is playable/legal, can its format be changed, ie, from .wma to .mp3

thanks for any help here

Well, most downloaded songs protected by the WMA DRM only allow playback on one PC. So, you cannot transfer that song to another PC. That's the joy of licensing music from on-line music stores.

Winamp does not allow for conversion of DRM protected media.
