Death penalty for Saddam Hussein

Sunday, 5 November 2006, 09:26 GMT
Quote:

Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been convicted of crimes against humanity by a Baghdad court and sentenced to death by hanging.

He was found guilty over his role in the killing of 148 people in the mainly Shia town of Dujail in 1982.

His brother Barzan al-Tikriti was also sentenced to death, as was Iraq's former chief judge Awad Hamed al-Bander

Former vice-president Taha Yassin Ramadan got life in jail and three others received 15 year prison terms.

Another co-defendant, Baath party official Mohammed Azawi Ali, was acquitted.

Saddam Hussein shouted out "Allahu Akbar!" (God is Greatest) and "Long live Iraq. Long live the Iraqi people!" after the judge announced the verdict.

Correspondents say the former leader looked visibly shocked as the sentence was passed, but the BBC's world affairs editor John Simpson said that as he was led away Saddam Hussein seemed to have a small smile on his face.

"It was as if he was thinking 'I've come here and done what I intended to do'," our correspondent said.

mysterious_w 5th November 2006 11:13

Great. They're making him a martyr.

There is little doubt of his guilty sentence, and although the trial did almost dissolve into pantomime theatre, it seems like it's carried out as fair a trial as possible under the circumstances. However, the death penalty is not the best solution, even though it looked likely from the start.

I think the best punishment would have been a life sentence with no parole and lengthy spells of solitary. Regular new pictures of the slowly ailing Saddam would give comfort to the victims, while reducing his influence over those susceptible to rebellious ideas.

Quote:

Saddam Hussein and his co-defendants will be given the right to appeal, but that is expected to last a few weeks and to end in failure for the defendants.
Even still, it's not over yet.

ElChevelle 5th November 2006 12:21

He should be happy. He's accomplished so much in life including several appearances on South Park.

I already have the image in my mind of him, head torqued to one side with tongue dangling out of mouth lifeless.

watadoo 5th November 2006 15:01

I think they should sentence him to running Iraq as interim president, reporting directly to Donald Rumsfeld nad dick Cheney. That has to be a job from Hell two or three counts worse than hanging.

MidnightViper88 5th November 2006 16:20

Martyr this, martyr that...

Who the fuck really keeps counts with the millions of martyrs these days?

By these counts, it's hardly significant for any of those nutjobs to be revered as a martyr since it seems they're so easily disposable...Kill the bastard and let his Allah sort him out...

gaekwad2 5th November 2006 16:33

Millions of unknowns.

Saddam still has a following (at least in his hometown, see the article) who'll gladly use it as a means to divert attention from his crimes.

ElChevelle 5th November 2006 16:38

Who cares if he's a martyr?
Now if he can eat an apple and shit a fruit salad, I'll be impressed.
What are the turban clad freaks gonna do? Start wearing bomb laden vests?

mysterious_w 5th November 2006 17:47

To be honest yes. In much greater numbers before, sending home even more of your loyal young men in flag laden bodyboxes.

God bless the death penalty.

ElChevelle 5th November 2006 18:11

Where are they getting all this bomb material anyway? Old fireworks?

zootm 5th November 2006 20:11

I think the death penalty is a really stupid, barbaric punishment. But while it's still around, there's few people more deserving.

MidnightViper88 5th November 2006 22:34

Saddam gasses hundreds of innocent civilians, the dead aren't martyr'd...The Iraqis punish Saddam to death, the criminal gets martyr'd...

...something doesn't ring up here...

Shang_Tsung 5th November 2006 22:51

thats a real justice for saddam.
Us done job very good in iraq:up:

What .. no canings, torture, mustard gas, firing squads? It should be an eye for an eye in his case. Fuck mercy.

The Shiites and Kurds certainly do remember them.

And Saddam's followers most likely employ the usual lame excuses, like "those were all terrorists" (or perhaps there were terrorists hiding behind them?).

The death penalty in Iraq has to be carried out by hanging, according to the country's new constitution. However, Saddam has said he would rather face a firing squad.
I'd say we let Saddam have his way, just this one last time...

dlichterman 6th November 2006 02:18

And the reason that they are hanging him is that the electricity is not reliable enough after we bombed the power plants.

Sorry.....someone had to.....

Because what better way to prove how much better off the people are without him in charge than to continue doing exactly what he did?

rockouthippie 6th November 2006 10:03

When someone is executed that means someone has to do it. When we make war, our children go. When they come back, they are killers.

Everyone knows in their heart of hearts that killing is wrong unless it is necessary. Killing confined prisoners isn't.

If Saddam poses a threat, it's that he still gets to have a parade while they kill him. It would be better to drop him in a dark hole to be forgotten.

A great part of the human spirit is lost when you are forced to kill. We are not killers by nature. We need to raise a flag for God and country and elect wimpy Hitler lookin dudes.............

But killing, including executing people, is not something that we should expose anyone to, unless it's absolutely, positively necessary.

We really know this. That's why it costs 12 million to kill somebody on the average.

Makes the lawyers happy

Kill Saddam?. Eh... what for? .... put him in a zoo, and let kids poke him with a stick.

Saddam killed his opponents. The thing is that his opponents were often worst than he.

Iraq was a violent place before Saddam, it was violent (probably less) while he was in power, it's violent now, and it's gonna stay that way for the foreseeable future.

That's because 25 million people want to kill each other and only Saddam stopped them.

If we go back to 1985, we might find a different impression of Saddam Hussien than a later one. Back then, you might have seen him as a champion of reforms in Iraq.

So they'll hang him with a kangaroo court, but the situation is just about as much our fault as his.

Hmmm.....

This is actually a fair point - before the Iran/Iraq war, Saddam had (through various dodgy dealings to get into power) managed to stabilise the once-chaotic country immeasurably. On the other hand his hold on power had become a serious problem in its own right before the latest war, and he'd ceased to really care about his people (some might say that his policies of appeasing the people were simply to get himself into that position of power; I suppose we'll never know the whole truth of it).

How about disembowelment, then beheading for Saddam. It's far more fun to watch than a hanging.

allenx 6th November 2006 12:24

Well that's good for him :) Death penalty i want to see him naked on the public while cutting his body! hehe~

MidnightViper88 6th November 2006 18:53

I only see this as the Iraqis exercising their new-found democracy; It's the Iraqis executing Saddam Hussein, and I don't have any room to say what they're doing is right or wrong...

The irony of this? Saddam was sentenced before a fair (Though completly predictable) trial...Maybe not a perfect trial, with a lawyer getting killed every month, or having to swap judges after the first judge allowed the defendents to turn the court into a circus...But it was still a trial...A drastic way to face justice when compared to the back-room execution of someone who would've spoken out against Saddam's rule...

swingdjted 14th November 2006 23:45

I don't like killing either, and not that it matters, but I have learned that it does indeed take more money to kill than it does to imprison for life.

If you really want to punish him, toss him in the pen with a well built horney cell mate, and even if he isn't making fruit salad, he'll surely be tossing the salad.

Better yet, toss him in the 'hole' or 'the box' for a while - the solitary confinement room for serious misbehavior cases - a room that's pitch dark, too short to stand up in, and too small to lie down in...

InvisableMan 15th November 2006 00:27

Death is almost a reward for the things he did. They could have done much worse, I'm all for breaking of the geneva convention.

I was talking with a guy at the fitness club today who told me that Saddam is a "Good guy!" He said that Saddam did a good thing by killing thousands of innocent people!! Including women and children ... They all deserved to die ...

I let him know my opinion ... Saddam should be tortured slowly, by giving him a taste of his own torture .. grinding parts of his feet away slowly, pulling out his finger nails, gouging out his eyeballs ......

I couldn't leave without telling the man that would be my judgement, but I'm not the judge, and vengance belongs to God alone.

Seems like support for Saddam is worldwide, not just inside of iraq ..... Does that surprise anyone really?

ElChevelle 2nd December 2006 01:22

No one thinks badly of Saddam until they find out he also practiced cruelty to animals:rolleyes:

History is written by the victors. The way things are going, it will be a miracle if there are any Iraqis left to write the book. I just wonder how many people will die when they hang him. I have the feeling he's not going to be alone.

This is sort of like prosecuting Satan for governing hell.

Nah. This could be fun. I want him in the zoo with a big sign.

"Don't feed the petty dictators!".

We could make a whole exhibit. Get Nuriega, Castro, Kudafi etc.....

"Here children, you see the zookeepers hosing down the petty dictators...... They is some problem between Saddam and our homosexual orangutan..... But we try to keep our primates in a natural environment, so we can't interfere...... "

Kinda reminds me of Yugoslavia after world war II under strongman Tito. He ruled with an iron hand yet kept the Serbs and the Croats, Christians and Moslems from slitting each other's throats. Once Tito died, the place fucking fell apart into ethnic and religious violence. Iraq = same freaking thing. Bush -boy just sped things along a bit by bombing the bejesus out of everything, shutting off the power and kicking the Sunni's out of power. All that without disarming the country. boy howdy what a clusterfuck.

rockouthippie 13th December 2006 09:57

But we babysat the Yugoslavian wars and tried to get in the way of some of the genocide. It was enough that the final operation in 2001 "Operation Essential Harvest" disarmed the last of the organized Albanian militants, while diplomacy got them (at least in theory) a better deal with their legitimate rights grievances.

Iraq is a tougher nut, but it's hardly impossible.

Read the Iraq Study Report and the bi-partisan, half-assed eulogy for hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people.

The jist of this report.... "Screw it, we can't win, but let's try to blame the Iraqis and Bush."

A bipartisan white wash to distance themselves from Rumsfeld and Bush.

One thing that's safe in american politics is blaming Bush because it rained. Once we've established that everything on the planet is Bush's fault, we can let the Iraqis kill each other with a clear conscience.

watadoo 24th December 2006 17:22

True, but the other constant from the rightie's pov is no matter how many times he fucks up, no matter how incompetent his regime is, no matter how strong and clear is the evidence of wrongdoing to the point of criminality, Bush can do no wrong, has never done wrong and just a good, god-fearing Texas rancher. It's called an impasse. Fortunately the American people spoke quite clearly in November via their vote to loosen the grip on power of the decider and his handlers and toadies.

They spoke clearly by electing a minor majority in Congress?. I'm sure the democrats will rapidly get themselves fired. We fired them before, we'll fire them again.

Because they didn't learn. They think they have a mandate if you give them a 1% majority.

Really, moderate republicans were only replaced with moderate democrats in Congress, so I'm not seeing much difference.

Except maybe more whining and bleating about how abused they are.

ElChevelle 24th December 2006 23:56

I, for one, am just happy that the corrupt fuckers got their asses kicked in November.

watadoo 25th December 2006 13:53

word. And the kicking will continue. time to lawyer up cheney, w and rummy.

rockouthippie 25th December 2006 15:47

News flash guys. The republicans did not get their ass kicked. Moderate republicans were replaced by moderate democrats. And the "majority" in Congress is slight. How the voting about any issues goes didn't change much.

With Nancy Pelosi being the speaker of the house, I'm sure the republicans are laughing their ass off.

Once the voters get a load of Ms. Pelosi, the future of the democratic party is laughable.

One thing about the current democrats. The acid eating Haite-Ashbury pseudo-intellectual beatniks are always proud of their stupidity.

They'd probably win if they would sneak around being quietly liberal, but they aren't that smart.

After all, what did it take to get people to vote for democrats?. George Bush. A monkey with his butt in a bucket could have beat Bush.

Even with that, it was hardly a landslide. The democrats are acting all arrogant and pretending they have a mandate.

They'd probably win if they would sneak around being quietly liberal, but they aren't that smart.

They'll go off on some investigation that will come to nothing about George Bush, introduce legislation to teach blind baby seals to drive, and get their cue from "The Donald"...... You're fired!.

Again.

ElChevelle 25th December 2006 16:55

Right.

Is that all you people do is hate and point fingers?
