Internet radio pausing temporary storage location
I recently found that I can pause live radio streams using Winamp (5.3). This is a very nice feature for when you need to run somewhere during your favorite song and don't want to miss your favorite part, but what I'd like to know is where the temporary stream cache is stored and perhaps how to change that location.

This is not a true pause, and will only work over a short period(set by the data buffer size in in_mp3.dll streaming tab). AFAIK there is no access to this buffer.
Also, The station itself will be broadcasting from a small buffer, so the chances are you will not have continuity when you unpause. UJ |
Right, thanks for the help, I only wonder about this because after having Winamp paused after 8 hours of being out of house (due to my accidentally pressing pause instead of stop) I came back to a C: drive that was about 800 meg. more full than when I left. It also seemed to start where I'd left off. What encouraged me to think this was a cache of some sort was that as I pressed stop, my C: drive "magically" lost 800 megs

Interesting. Maybe Egg can shed some light on that.
As I've always understood it Winamp keeps a buffer, usually around 20 secs, Once you unpause, the buffer will start to play out, reconnect if it can and replenish itself from whatever is now in the stations buffer. Are you sure this is a true live broadcast, and not an 'audio on demand' type stream. The situation may be different in that case. UJ |
Positive, I'm currently doing pause-testing on Radioseven which is a live stream.
It could just be a coincidence. |
Oh dear ... Swedish :)
Not seeing anything unusual, the situation is as described above, with no internet traffic while paused. Good quality stream by btw UJ |
Did you install any third-party Mp3 decoder, such as MPG123 or MP3Pro, as this might be a feature of those plugins, but not the default Nullsoft encoder.

No third party decoder. I'm now going to do another test of 30 or so seconds to see if the stream jumps in any way after 20 seconds, and again pausing for 45.
Edit: Right, it was just me being my own thickheaded self, but I do now have a much better understanding of Winamp. Thanks. |
Damn, I was just going to say "I can't reproduce the feature" :p
