Comment Field on iPod

I was playing a song on my iPod a while back and clicking through the song to get to the rating. As I was going through the clicks to get there, I stumbled upon a comment field. Does the iPod support comments? If so, does ml_ipod support the viewing of comments on songs in the iPod? If so, how do you do it.....If I remember right, last time I tried to do it...the comment would not display on the iPod.

The only time I saw a comment showing up on the iPod was for a podcast, which does this instead of the rating page.

You can edit the comment in ml_ipod with Ctrl-E on a song, or Rightclick->Edit information...

Stupifier, it's possible that what you saw in your song was some text on the lyrics ID3v2 field of the song. 5G iPods and nanos have the capability of showing lyrics.

hmmmm.....maybe thats what it was. Does ml_ipod support tagging this area for the iPod. If it does, I'll just swap all my Comments into the lyrics field. Don't exactly care to READ the lyrics while I'm playing a song. I'd much rather hold some useful information like the album review or other stuff.

Yes, if you have lyrics in the ID3, they are shown on the iPod. ml_ipod does support that.

Stupifier 29th November 2006 07:45

well....crap. Its not working for me. No Lyrics displayed on my test mp3.

To clarify, I inserted lyrics into an mp3 using Tag & Rename (v3.2) and than had winamp re-read the metadata on the mp3. I sync the ipod and it doesn't seem to detect the change to the mp3 and therefore doesn't do the Remove file/Add file dialog on it.

Furthermore, Where is the Lyrics section/tag in Winamp. I can't find it. I just kind of went on faith that after re-reading the metadata winamp would see the lyrics change and cooperate. I can not actually find the lyrics field in winamp.

No, there doesn't appear to be a "lyrics" field on Winamp ID3 Editor. When I want to put lyrics on my MP3 files I use TagScanner (http://xdev.narod*****tagscan_e.htm). It works great for me. In the other hand, I'm not sure if the iPod reads the lyrics from the MP3 file or if attempts to read it somewhere else, much in the same way it does with artwork.

AtmaWeapon, this is the only time that the iPod really looks into the MP3 (besides the music, of course). It needs a flag set in the iTunesDB (which ml_ipod does), and then it reads the lyrics directly from the MP3.

But, Stupifier, you're right, the Sync won't detect these changes to the original file. You have to delete the tracks on the iPod manually, and then do a sync. During the next transfer, the flag will be set and the lyrics should be displayed on the iPod.

Basically, I'll be reloading the MP3's on my iPod. NOt too bad. I'll have to mess with this a little later though. I'll post results. For now, I got a bunch of other work I need to get done.

Stupifier 30th November 2006 17:48

Well, I gotta say after hours of ID3 Tag updating (Album art and comment/Lyric fields) I have successfully added album art and Album Reviews for all of my complete Albums all viewable on my iPod. Thats about 6500 songs!

I added Album art and Album Reviews (in the comment field) using Tag&Rename. Once done, I had to transfer all the Album review info that was in the comment field into the lyric field since iPod only reads Lyric fields. Once done, I had to reload all the songs on my iPod.

The Result....all Album art and Album Reviews viewable on my iPod.

Wow, you're a diligent guy, Stupifier!

What about adding all your experience to the Wiki? IT#s waiting for documentation of the album art features. Would be great!

I added a little comment to your post Abu. I think you need a new section on the Lyrics viewing capabilities of the iPod. Not many people know about it. Furthermore, there are actually 3 different types of Lyric fields possible on ID3 tags and the iPod only recognizes one of them. It took a bit of fiddling to figure everything out. I'll be happy to add to a new section for that as well.

abu 30th November 2006 20:47

Well, if you don't mind, you could write a real introduction to the album art stuff. Like: Where is art stored (ID3, file...), when is it transfered, what are the options,. Most of it is already here in the forum, so copy/paste will do a lot.

And I added a new section for lyrics to he TOC, so go ahead...

Hey Abu....I've been really busy at the moment with Finals for school and all but I have not forgotten about the Wikipedia guide I was going to write. Just giving an update

abu 13th December 2006 18:17

Cool. Just for clarification: This is not "Wikipedia", it's only the "ml_iPod Wiki". Wikipedia uses the same software (MediaWiki), but it is the "multilingual, Web-based free content encyclopedia project. The name is a portmanteau of the words wiki and encyclopedia." (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia)
