Normalizing Audio in Video Files - How ?
Greeting all,
A question that's always plagued me and one I've never resolved.... When I play a selection of music videos on my audio juke box with Winamp, some videos have the audio loud and others quiet. Not a big problem I know, but a slightly irritating one, especially when the volume has been adjusted for the lower setting and when another video is automatically selected the sound blasts everyone out of the room. Question is : Is there a normalize setting in Winamp for the video section or a plug-in that I can use ? or is there some kind of normalizer available for Windows XP that's independent of Winamp, but will keep the volume at a constant level regardless of the output of the video file ? Hope someone can help Thanx in advance Steven Q |

It depends on what file format/codec the audio content of the video is, and what DirectShow Filter you're using to decode it with. For example, if the audio is any of mp2, mp3, vorbis, ac3, aac, etc, and you're using the recomended ffdshow (see above link), you can go to: Start > Programs > ffdshow > Audio Decoder Config: Volume (left pane) > checkmark 'Volume' and 'Normalize' in the right pane. |
just a note:
Winamp (with stardard settings) can ReplayGain successfully the .wmv and .asf videos (because these formats support the metadata) |
Yup, formats supported by in_wm.dll (wmv/asf/wma) support ReplayGain, but alas, formats supported by in_dshow don't.

metadata for video
right! this is comprehensible because many video formats have a limited (or nothing at all) metadata support
Windows Media Player reads the tags (but don't supports the ReplayGain) in .asf & .wmv written by Winamp without problems (but gives non editing options) for the .mpg format, the (shareware) tagger Tag&Rename and iTunes can add metadata (in a incompatible way between them) and Winamp is unable to load these tags the same for the .mov format (tags editable in iTunes) |
