making a playlist

I wanted to make playlists for my MP3 player that is part of my Garmin c550 GPS.

I opened the desired songs in winamp 5.35. I then saved as a playlist. I made 2 playlists, actually, and then copied the playlists and songs onto my SD memory chip.

My problem was, while my Garmin MP3 could see everything, it simply played all songs, even though I clicked on Import Playlist and selected one of my Playlist titles. :(

I REALLY prefer winamp over media player. Is there a way that I can make this work?

Thank you many times over if you can help me!

Does your player actually support playlists? There is not much point in attempting this unless you are certain that it does.

Do you use the Portables function of the Media Library? If you do, it is quite easy to send a Media Library playlist to your Portable. Right click on the playlist, select "Send to:" and then your portable name. Mine would be Send to: -> IAUDIO E:

You can also tell Winamp to sync the playlist, this way Winamp will update the playlist and files if you make changes to the playlist. Connect your portable and open Prefs -> Media Library -> Portables -> [Your portable name] -> Sync tab. Now check the box next to the playlist(s) you wish to sync to your device. Now you just need to hit the sync button in the Portable section of the Media Library.

If you are trying to create a playlist with the Playlist Editor and then save it straight to the device, it probably won't work as the playlist will point to files in a non-existant location. Winamp will save the paths in the playlist as absolute ones like:
X:\Path to Music\Files.mp3

The only way to prevent this is to make Winamp use relative paths. To do this the playlist must be saved in the same folder as the files or in a higher one. One suggestion would be to use music that is already on the portable to make the playlist and then save the playlist in the root folder of the device.

Thank you very much! Your advice was GREAT! Thank you!!! I didn’t even realize Winamp had a Media Library, but do now, so that’s something I’ll have to explore.

As soon as I read the words relative path, I thought of how websites work. I took your advice and worked from the Garmin and it worked perfect. Thank you so much for the speed of your response and for the great advice.

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but things have been hectic lately.

By the way, I’m taking it that Major Dude is your cat and he looks really nice. Have a wonderful summer!
