Strange playback of music files

Hi

I had a Win2000 system containing a variety of music files (mainly MP3 and WMA) which played perfectly on the version of Winamp installed. That system has just died and has been replaced by a slightly higher spec system running WinXP.

All the music files have been copied over and I've just installed the latest Winamp. However, the playback sounds very strange - there's no audible chopping or classic distortion but they sound as if they've been re-mixed with certain channels turned almost off. I've tried other software players (forgotten how much stuff has to happen before WMplayer loads) and playback is the same. I'm listening on USB headphones (as before) so I assume that it shouldn't be soundcard related, and the files sound normal on my MP3 player.

Any advice very gratefully received.

Thanks
Knots

all system drivers are correctly installed and updated?

having the same problem with all the players maybe some effects (like surrond, 3d, global balance, global equalization, night effect, AGC and similar, depending by your drivers and hardware) are enabled? (go to in control panel of you audio device)
