Problems with 5.5
Okay I've tried to ignore this as much as possible but I can't anymore. 5.5 has some serious problems. When I click the X in the top right hand corner to shut down winamp, this is what happens. The main window disappears but the equalizer, playlist editor and shoutcast source are left hanging on my desktop. So I'll do ctrl - alt - delete to shut winamp down but when the windows task manager comes up, winamp won't even be listed. So the only way I can get winamp off my desktop then is to reboot my computer. When I go to reboot, the message pops up that windows is closing windows.exe. This is when I'm using the Classic Skin, because it doesn't seem to slow down my computer like the Bento skin does. When I use the Bento skin, the Equalizer for the Classic Skin appears behind the Bento skin. Also now no matter which skin that I'm using in 5.5, it seems that it takes more than a minute to change from one playlist to another after I have cleared the Playlist Editor. The Bento skin seems to take longer to maximize as well after being minimized. Another problem that I've encountered has to do with when I'm listing to a stream in winamp. I will click on the stream to start and sometimes winamp will freeze up, that never happened with 5.35. Also, sometimes when I start up winamp, and click on Connect on the shoutcast source, the information will not register as being sent to the server(on the shoutcast source, right above the Connect button) and this too isn't a problem that I had with 5.35. I don't want to stop using 5.5 because I like it even if it is a bit big but it's really frustrating. The auto-tagger doesn't always get the info correct but I know that's not Nullsoft's problem. I don't want to uninstall 5.5 and go back to 5.35 but right now given all these problems, that seems the only thing to do.
Incase anybody wants my info: WindowsXP Home Edition SP2 AMD Duron (tm) Processor 807 MHz, 384 MB of RAM Winamp 5.5 installed over Winamp 5.35 (never used any of the betas) Spacial Audio's Stacker plugin last.fm latest client & plugin gen_msn (Plugin to show what's playing in Live Messenger) DJ Trueheart |
bento and modern skins aren't really meant for computers the age of yours as they use quite a bit more resources than the old classic skin system.
the new media library will require more power aswell(but should be fine when using a classic skin) DSP plugins require LOTS of cpu and ram resources. can you please perform a clean reinstall of winamp 5.5 as its most likely your third party plugins are causing most of the problems. |
I'll try a clean install of everything though I wasn't having these issues before 5.5

Problems with 5.5
Michael,
The reply you got was correct. The real problem lies within your GDI (Graphic Display Interface) and the fact that the WindowsXP GDI at times needs more memory to complete the functions. If you know what you are doing with your PC, I suggest going into the BIOS and upping the Graphic Memory allocation and seeing if that does not fix the problem. Also, as evolution occurs with programs, they become more and more demanding upon system resources (aka: bloatware) so, as far as Windows Updates - Turn them off! if you are still using XP Home most of the updates comming out are not worth a hill of beans. That's the best advice that I have for you. In an unrelated matter, I am having issue with the WINAMP MODERN skin, which is the skin I have been using ever since it came out. Under ver 5.35 there was never any kind of LAG, the skin was very stable. Yesterday I lost internet connection.... 1. Lost connection 2. hit 'play' to force refresh 3. system displayed familiar CONNECT STRING 4. Winamp did not reconnect 5. Rechecked connections - everything OK 6. hit 'play' again (force refresh) 7. Music Resumed (partial success) 8. The Display did not refresh solution: had to reboot Winamp (shut it down all the way) I am running a 3.4ghz, HP system with 512Mb RAM, WebServer, MailServer, Yahoo (a real system hog). I do not completely fault Winamp 5.5, as I know that my own system resources head towards 'critical' at times, so machine slow-down is expected. Oddly enough, when I shut Yahoo down completely, my system run like it finally had a cup of coffee! So, just beware of what you are running, kind of sympathize with your machine. Your machine is fine, your idea of reloading is not completely out of the question as there can be other things running that you are unsure of or no longer need, and this is a good time probably to revisit what you are running. Beware of HD space, if you have 10% or less of your drive space, it's time to move things to DVD/CD and lighten the load. If you get to 8% - 5% you will definitely start loosing things as the drive is eventually going to get confused. therefor, if you have a 160GB drive, don't let it get anywhere near 5GB available space. If you need any other help, just hollar..... D. Robert Junod junodr |
Thanks everyone. I have done a clean install of 5.5 plus all the plugins that I was using and I will try broadcasting tonight and tomorrow using both the Bento and Classic skins to see if I still have the problem. I know I need to clean up the hard drive, finding the time is the problem though.

Problems with 5.5
Michael,
don't ya just hate that? What I usually wind up doing every year or so is just buying a new HD and installing my OS and restarting with the programs that I am currently using. Everything else (mydocs, etc) remain on the old drive, as that drive has become a slave. Just thought you might like to know "how the flock I do this stuff". There come a time when restart is the only reasonable option. We all have reasons for saving files, most it's cause you want to just have it - for archive, sharing, etc reasons - BUT you'd go nuts if one day you couldn't find it. eh, I dunno what else to really say but... if you want some fantastic wallpapers, check out my profile and click on the WWW link. I prolly have 10,000 or more. *warning there is a legal popup when you got to the site* Peace! |
I've got another problem. When I thought that I'd have to stop using winamp, I started experimenting with another media player called the Quintessential Player and the Quintessential Media Player. Now when I listen to my own stream in Winamp 5.5 (which seems to maximize and minimize now that I don't have the spacial audio stacker installed nor the Project Normalizer), it has the url for the homesite of QCD where it says "Visit Station Homepage" when my mouse runs over that area. I've uninstalled both QCD and QMP and did another clean install of Winamp 5.5, and that url is still there. What should I do so it will display my stations homepage and not the QCD homepage?

Possible suggestion:
(a) Look at Order of Installation ? [installing WinAmp LAST, therefor it overwriting possible home pages" (b) Take the bull by the horns - copy the URL for QCD (the unwanted URL) and go into REGEDIT and Edit/Find that reference item, rewrite that item to where you want it to be. - Robert (when things get like this, sometimes one needs to get up front and personal with their machine) Then again, I have been dealing with Computers since 1978. |
I believe I uninstalled QCD and QMP before I uninstalled winamp. I went into REGEDIT, copied and pasted the url and hit search but came up with no results.

okay, repost under different subject.... sorry, but those were my best ideas for the moment... if i come up with anything, i'll hollar back.
peace! <end of thread> |
