5G/5.5G Hacking to Touch/Classic

Hey guys....just thought people here may want to know about this. A bunch of guys over at www.ipodhacking.com created a hack for 5G/5.5G iPod's to make them look like the iPod touch screen.

Here is what your 5G/5.5G iPod could look like if you get this hack
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/3...uchhackae3.jpg

If you guys want this, you'll have to head over to
www.ipodhacking.com
and read all the instructions carefully....and I mean carefully if you have never done hacking like this before.

----------------------------------------------------------

ON a sidenote....I think most of you already know about this but they have also made it possible for your 5G/5.5G iPod to look like the Classic iPod's. This hack is a little bit older. Here is a pic of that below:
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/9995/previewdw2.jpg

If you want this hack go ahead and CAREFULLY read about it here:
http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=30444

DISCLAIMER:
I'm not going to be answering any technical/installation instructions about this stuff....frankly, I'm just spreading some iPod news around to those that may want to know. Obviously, I'm not going to be responsible for any weird stuff that happens to your iPod because of any of this.

Stupifier 20th December 2007 04:16

Oh and here might be an easier way to install the iPod Classic hack to your 5G/5.5G iPod. I forgot about it.

Read about it here:
http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=31987

Special NOTE:
NONE OF THIS STUFF MESSES WITH ml_iPod. I've been using the classic hack and similar hacks for over 4 months now without any related problems.

fatcerberus1 20th December 2007 05:30

I like the concept of the iPod touch hack, but I'd rather not, as it'll make my iPod seem too wannabe-ish. :) So I'll go with the classic hack, instead. I'm getting really bored with the 5.5G's old-school barebones UI.

Edit: Hey, that's awesome! :D I tried the iPod touch hack too, and it's also pretty neat (and more polished than the classic one, it seems). I'll stick with the 6G look for now, though. :)

Stupifier 20th December 2007 06:54

They did spend more time on the iPod Touch hack I believe. Loads of modified Classic iPod hacks were released by other people following the original.

I actually use a Horizontal Classic Hack layout that allows multiple Background images. It can be found here:
http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=31011

fatcerberus1 20th December 2007 16:17

Hey, that looks neat. Only trouble is, iPodWizard won't work for me. If I run it while my iPod is connected, it crashes on startup. :( I can get it to run if I start it while my iPod isn't connected, but then it's useless as it doesn't detect it being re-plugged unless I restart it.

Edit: Heh, off-topic, but I just realized I've been promoted from "senior member" to "major dude". I wonder what threshold I passed to get that status...

Stupifier 20th December 2007 16:45

Hmm....well iPodWizard does not support the following:
-2G/3G iPods (I think it doesn't work with 2G, don't remember though)
-6G iPods

So, if you have those....sorry. Otherwise I dunno. If you're really bummed about it, I would suggest troubleshooting at the iPodWizard forums (http://www.ipodwizard.net/index.php)

fatcerberus1 20th December 2007 17:07

No, the only thing connected to my computer is a 5.5G. I wouldn't be attempting to install an iPod classic-wannabe hack on an actual classic, after all!

Nah, I don't need iPodWizard that badly. I'm perfectly happy with the vertical split. I'm guessing it's some obscure Vista issue. Winamp CD burning recently stopped working for me on Vista, as well. The burn thread crashes almost as soon as it starts (it used to work). I'm just amazed that it doesn't take Winamp down with it.

I installed this and it looks awesome! :D Thanks for sharing. I wish those pages weren't so littered with ads and junk though, it could be pretty confusing to someone to find all the links and get it installed. :/

fatcerberus, I own a 5.5G as well and my iPodWizard also crashes on start-up. :|

Glad you guys like the Hacks. Sorry to hear that iPodWizard does not function correctly for you guys.

fatcerberus1 22nd December 2007 01:50

Tip: If you want the touch hack but iPodWizard doesn't work, you can adapt the classic installer. Just edit the batch file to use the binary for the touch hack instead of classicfw55g.

Thanks fatcerberus! I was just going to ask about that.

Cool Beans.

podgey 26th December 2007 10:51

oh i thought this was a hack to remove the split screen from the ipod classic, im not to keen on it

Stupifier 26th December 2007 17:31

Sorry podgey, this thread only refers to those that have 5th Generation or 5.5 Generation iPods. The newest model of iPod's (iPod Classic) are 6th Generation and are currently unsupported by Firmware Modding tools like the one's mentioned here.

Hmmm.. I revisited this problem today after trying out the iPod Touch theme. I am wondering if it is something that ml_iPod did that doesn't allow iPodWizard to load our iPods correctly (causes the crash)?

Stupifier, do you have a 5G or 5.5G? I'm trying to see if I can narrow down this crash problem. D: I'd like to further modify the iPod Touch theme to black menu / white text setup, and I don't think I'll be able to do so without iPodWizard. :D

Stupifier 4th January 2008 09:04

I have used iPodWizard and ml_iPod successfully now for over 4-6 months. I have a 5th Generation iPod (not 5.5G).

I'm sorry I can't help you much on this problem. Frankly, I've just never run into this problem before. They both work fine for me.

I think you should try reformatting your iPod. Just reformat, than try to use iPodWizard. If it STILL doesn't work, than you know it isn't ml_iPod but something else. If you are able to use iPodWizard...than go ahead and mod to your hearts content and than use ml_iPod and put all your music on.

SyntaxGS 4th January 2008 11:58

Thanks, that helps.

Another question: Do you have iTunes installed as well as ml_iPod (this question applies to both you and fatcerberus :D)?

This may also be a source of the crash, as iPodWizard may require an installation of it. :|

fatcerberus1 4th January 2008 13:00

Could be... but I refuse to install iTunes on principle. Every time I ever have, it's caused problems. So I just stick with pure ml_iPod now. :)

I'm with you on this one man, but I bit the bullet and installed it just to check if it was the problem why iPodWizard wouldn't load. It indeed is the problem, as I can now use iPodWizard to fiddle around with all sorts of things on it.

I honestly feel so dirty for installing iTunes... I hate it so much. :o

Is it possible to determine which files from itunes are needed by iPodWizard and just copy those files to the system without installing itunes?

If it gives you some comfort: Even I have iTunes on my PC (need it for development of ml_ipod only, though)

I'm really not sure, you'd have to go over to the iPodWizard Forums (http://www.ipodwizard.net/index.php) and ask that question. Make sure your browser is equipped with some sort of adblocker before going there, though. :D

Thanks, that does help a bit. :D What really annoys me is how it installs like 40 other things without you knowing. I'm finding all sorts of weird folders around my drive!!

Yeah, I hate bloated programs like this. Create an extra folder or two in Program Files, that's fine, but start installing stuff in system32 and putting files all over the place, that's getting ridiculous. What's worse is programs like Visual Studio 2008 that create 10+ entries in Add/Remove Programs (I'm not even kidding! ) and then don't automatically uninstall them when you uninstall the original program, forcing you to do it yourself! This is what finally drove me over the edge and made me go back to VS6.

Stupifier 4th January 2008 17:20

I'm glad you guys figured out the problem. And yes, I do have iTunes installed on my Computer....and yes, I hate it being there. I use iTunes to buy music I can't find anywhere else, thats it. Its so bloated I hate it.

Enjoy modding your iPod's guys.

kaatinthehaat 9th January 2008 00:17

For ipod wizard to work you have to shut down 2 processes in Windows task manager before connecting your ipod or running ipod wizard.

see this link for instructions: http://www.ipodwizard.net/wiki/index...etting_Started

Works very well.

Personally , I prefer the Windows Vista theme on my ipod 5.5G.

See middle of page here: http://www.driven-design.net/

Stupifier 9th January 2008 07:18

Great. Maybe some of you guys will start to create some sick custom themes....thats kinda what I do. I just don't like to post em as they likely use copyrighted pictures and stuff.

iPodService and iTunesHelper. I don't have iTunes installed (and haven't since the last reformat/reinstall I did), so those processes don't even exist on my system, and iPodWizard STILL won't run. Must be a different issue...

Yea, I posted it above. You NEED iTunes to run it.
