Notes:

Winamp 5.52, build 1800

1) Re: Fixed: [in_mp3] Ultravox streaming metadata stack overflow (Thanks: Secunia)

This minor .x release is ostensibly a security patch, which was brought ahead of our usual release schedule. New features and Known Bug fixes etc will resume as normal in the next release.

More info

Note that ALL previous versions of Winamp 5.x & 2.x / in_mp3 are affected :-)

2) Re: APEv2 tag support for MP3

Winamp/in_mp3 will only read from/write to existing APEv2 tags,
but will not create new ones from scratch.
The config items for this feature were not implemented in time for this release.
For now, you can enable/disable this feature by editing the relevant values in winamp.ini

[Nullsoft MPEG Decoder]
parse_apev2=1
write_apev2=1

1=enable
0=disable

Tag read order priority = ID3v2, APEv2, Lyrics3, ID3v1

3) 5.52 Wasabi Changes

4) Please refer to the 5.5 & 5.51 Release Notes & Known Bugs sections for more info.

-5.51 Release Notes
-5.5 Release Notes
-Known Bugs/Issues 1
-Known Bugs #2
-Common Requests

The Essentials Pack for 5.51 can still be used for 5.52
There are no updates for this release.

Hi team,
firct, thank you for the new vewsion. Any and all updates are acknowleged and appreciated. I have a question about APE tags. They must be important for the DEVs to spend time implementing the ability to read and write them, but I am wondering if people actually prefer the APE tag to ID3?

iron2000 18th January 2008 03:16

Whats new in Bento skin #118?

DJ Egg 18th January 2008 05:26

@Juanus

APEv2 tag support has been on the wishlist for years.
The main reason for us adding support was that certain other players at some point used to write APEv2 tags by default, and also wrote ReplayGain values to APEv2 tags instead of ID3v2.

People would then come here asking why Winamp wasn't seeing the RG values.

Well, it does now. So now there really is no valid reason for using a 3rd-party mp3 plugin any more (eg. in_mad provides support for APEv2 tags).

@iron2000
There's a link to the 5.52 Wasabi Changelog in the first post.
I'll leave any further Bento-specific changes for Martin to report...

@LouCypher & YUTARO
It'll just be a relay server / cache issue, and should resolve eventually.

If not, try adding "gdownload" into the url, eg.
http://download.gdownload.nullsoft.c...52_pro_all.exe
http://download.gdownload.nullsoft.c...2_full_all.exe

TheUniqueTiger 18th January 2008 10:31

Thanks for the new release!!!

ByTor201 18th January 2008 13:44

There don't seem to be any skins included with either the full or the pro version. All I get is the classic skin. I've uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.:confused:

DJ Egg 18th January 2008 14:37

Make sure "User Interface Extensions -> Modern Skin Support" is checkmarked in the Installer Options.

ByTor201 18th January 2008 16:02

Yep, that was the problem. Somehow, that was unchecked. Just out of curiosity, was that option moved in the setup?

DJ Egg 18th January 2008 16:49

Yes, iirc, prior to 5.5 it was a separate root item in the options tree.

Finally! Devs, thanks so much for taking the time to listen and actually implement features like this. Now WinAmp can actually tell when MP3s have been passed through MP3Gain. ^_^

And thus, I can now start using that "Adjustment for files without ReplayGain" setting, and use WinAmp to catalog what of all my files still need to be RGed. Sweet.

TheUniqueTiger 19th January 2008 12:46

I just encountered a bug thats surely introduced in this version... When you go to DirectSound Output config -> Status tab... In the total time played time, the milliseconds are shown as negative always... I remember upto 5.51 it used to show this properly...

For example at one instant, I can have the total time played shown as "6w 2d 16:23:10.-357"... The milliseconds are always negative!

pHROZEN gHOST 19th January 2008 15:02

Thanks for the link. The link on the main page takes you to a download of 5.51 not 5.52. The EXE is actually 5.51. Somebody goofed!!!!

Pnyles 20th January 2008 06:08

I also would like to know what's different with the Bento skin?. Looks the same to me lol......Pete

iron2000 20th January 2008 09:38

Bento changes should be some unseen stuff, maybe maki scripts are changed to accomodate the maki updates.
I think.

pHROZEN gHOST 20th January 2008 13:58

To TheUniqueTiger ...

I looked for this problem in 5.52 and I can't see it. Maybe you have some other issues. The values are not negative in my case.

BTW, whoever (?) did it, thanks for getting the main page link for 5.52 up and running. I'm sure lots of users were miffed at this giving them 5.51 again.

amano 20th January 2008 22:34

Thanks for the release. Impressive, how polished Winamp now is. :up:

Michael T. 21st January 2008 04:10

I'm a bit confused on what some of the new changes are. Could somebody please explain what these features actually do?

Play and Playlist the Best Music on the Web with Media Monitor (What is Media Monitor?)

Enjoy Dynamic Song Recommendations

I'm glad to see the file download size was decreased. :)

DJ Egg 21st January 2008 05:53

@Michael T.

Those features were new to 5.5, not 5.52

The Media Monitor aka MP3 Blog scraper is in the Bento browser.
Basically, it lets you browse mp3 blog sites, and lists all the available mp3's underneath, so you can download them all in one go.
Alas, there's still no config for it, and it still just auto downloads files to the
My Documents\My Music root folder, and auto adds them to the local media library.

Dynamic Song Recommendations is the Gracenote MusicID Playlist Generator feature, available by right-clicking library or playlist items and selecting 'Play tracks similar to" (Scan & config available via: Prefs -> Plugins -> Media Library -> Playlist Generator -> config).

The download size for the *_all.exe installers is larger because they include 7 language packs, whereas e.g. *_en_us.exe is just the English language installer.

It surely does show the negative values for me... I've not noticed any changes made to the DirectSound Output plugin. (or may be I'm wrong?) I've been using as well as testing Winamp with every beta, but never have I seen such a (minor) bug! I wonder why the time value would be shown negative... I guess internally it keeps a variable of total time played, and it updates it with increments every 200ms or so... (There's nothing negative in such calculation too!)
Btw I've installed 5.52 over a successful 5.51, no other problems except this.

martin.deimos 21st January 2008 11:24

bento updates:
-now makes use of the Menu Script Object in maki (should be faster)
-updated skin.xml to UTF-8 so my name is written as Pöhlmann
-Browser object itself has now a home param, but this is not bento related ;)

but there will be some bigger changes for winamp 5.53 if i find time, so stay tuned

Okay I think I understand the Media Monitor a bit better now. If I read you right, basically what the Dynamic Song Recommedations does is tell the user that say Nightwish is similar to Within Temptation, if both artists are in a users current playlist and they right click on Nightwish?

Well 5.51's download size for the Full version is 11.24MB while the download size for 5.52 (Full) is 8.30. I'd say that's an improvement. Is there anything in the latest release that we can opt out not to install?
Thank you for explaining these to me. :)

DJ Egg 21st January 2008 22:26

The pro/full_all.exe installer filesize is still over 11mb
because it contains 7 lang packs.

The pro/full_en-us.exe installer is just over 8mb, because it contains no lang packs.

The Playlist Generator creates automatic playlists of between 20 and 200 songs with a similar acoustic fingerprint.

Michael T. 22nd January 2008 21:36

I read that Wikipedia entry and I'm afradid you lost me on what an accoustic fingerprint is.

CraigF 23rd January 2008 15:22

a code generated from the sound of a track, that can be computationally compared to codes generated from other tracks to decide on similarity.

Think of it as a way of your computer being able to know that two songs sound alike.

Hence, the playlist generator should be able to produce a playlist of songs following a similar theme/genre/sound.

GSi-R 24th January 2008 14:10

Thanks for the new release!

WINAMP Rocks!

hawke 25th January 2008 23:30

Dear DJ EGG
Have Tradition Chinese lang support in the future(next version[5.53 or 5.54])?
Thank you very much.

DJ Egg 26th January 2008 00:16

Unlikely to be included with the default distribution...

No-one's mentioned it on the Translations Mailing List either,
but if you want one, then someone will need to make a Chinese lang pack first...

See the Release Notes section of the 5.5 and 5.51 Released threads for more info.

Alborz777 29th January 2008 15:26

Cool!! Thanks for new release

djpete 31st January 2008 00:31

very quite in this thread these days.
Thats gotta be a good sign. No complaints.
Hey you guys may be onto a good thing with this Winamp thing or whatever they call it...lol

Lawnmower233 10th February 2008 20:31

Hey how come it doesn't appear in my "Set Default Programs" list in Windows Vista?

EDIT: Where's Winamp?

Anyone know why it was removed or is it just my installation? It was there in 5.51 and now it's not when I upgraded. Helpppp.

DJ Egg 11th February 2008 21:43

Reinstall it, maybe?

Lawnmower233 12th February 2008 16:03

Yeah ok. It's just annoying how temperamental it can be.

DJ Egg 12th February 2008 16:08

I assume you're referring to Vista there? If so, then yes, I agree :-)
