SLOOW startup

I've been a fan and using winamp since it first came out. It was great and ahead of it's time. It launched quickly, played my music well and I loved it.

Now, when I want to play music I find that the launch times on this and the previous winamp are ponderously long. Windows Media Player launches more quickly! Yuck!

Since I'm a strong believer in Winamp...I have to believe that there is something wrong with my configuration or some options that have recently been added that I can remove that will speed the launch.

Can someone share some hints/tips/solutions?

I haven't done any custom mods or anything. Just the plain simple free version. My uneducated guess is that all the browser stuff is slowing things down. Can I just uninstall that part of Winamp? I don't really want to use Winamp as a browser, just as a player for my mp3's and wav's.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Leaner alternative

Thanks for the tips.

After reading all the threads, this is what I took away:
Uninstall winamp

Reinstall winamp without the tons of extra "stuff" that comes with it.

So I did it, turning off all the wonderful internet browser, video playing, remote stuff, etc. etc.

Now it takes 5 secs to launch. Better, but still not up to the quick start I once loved on lesser computers in the past.

With everything I turned off, I got to see all the bloat in winamp. No offense, but it feels like winamp has "jumped the shark" in terms of having so much stuff added to it that (with the default install) it's now slower than Windows Media Player to launch. At least you can turn off all the features.

Can I strongly suggest a release to work on performance?

PS - There was a time when the only thing I was reluctant to upgrade for bloat reasons was AOL. I finally quit using AOL because of it. Please keep Winamp light, fast and an easy alternative to pick over Windows Media Player.

My installation of 5.52 takes less than 3 seconds to launch (perfectly acceptable, btw), running WinXP Pro and using the Bento modern skin, and the only changes I've made in the installer options are as follows...

Under the Multimedia Engine:
Sonic Ripping/Burning support is UNchecked

Under the Winamp Library:
Winamp Dashboard is UNchecked (useless anyway IMHO - at least for me)

Under Portable Media Player Support:
Everything is UNchecked except for USB Devices Support (since I only need this support)

In addition to what I UNchecked in the installer options, I have also added a good many 3rd-party authored plugins (most of which are the absolutely "must have" plugins created by DrO), and Winamp still takes less than 3 seconds to load for me while using a modern skin.

Well the "bloat" you refer to (which I do not consider bloat at all) are actually core feature changes that were implemented due to countless requests/wishes from the vast majority of Winamp users that post in these forums.

Yes - so therefore, there is no real problem then. Is there? :)
Instead of "blindly" clicking the NEXT button in the installer options (as some people appear to do), they can instead select and choose / check or UNcheck whatever they want, to keep Winamp as light and as fast-loading as they wish to.

Performance is fine in my case, as I've already indicated and as it also is for the majority of the millions of Winamp users. Of those millions, there are a few however (including yourself) who complain of poor performance. I mean, if everyone had performance issues, then there would be millions of people posting here complaining (which of course there are not), and the forums would not be able to handle it. LOL! :D

But that's the point - it is light, at least as light as how you choose it to be, and that again, is due to selecting/deselecting whatever you want to in the very configurable installer options.

Anyway, I'm glad that you have it working to your satisfaction now.

Happy Winamping!
