Wrong side of the road?

I woke up about 45 minutes ago and had to sign my time card at work. So I head out right when I wake up. I get about half way there when a cop stops me and asks if I'd just waken up and where I'm headed and where I work. I tell him my information and he runs it through his computer. He then tells me to ride my bike on the correct side of the road. He takes off and I'm thinking WTF? I didn't know there was a correct side of the road for a bike on the sidewalk. I'm pretty sure I was stopped for the fact I look kinda like a crackhead when I wake up. I'm not mad for him doing his job but that's kind of ridiculous.

From: http://www.bikelink.com/law_safety.htm

Duty of Bicycle Operator: Operation On Roadway. VC 21202

a) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at such time shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under any of the following situations:

1. When overtaking and passing another bicycle or motor vehicle proceeding in the same direction.
2. When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
3. When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions (including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or substandard width lanes) that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge. For purposes of this section, a "substandard width lane" is a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.

b) Any person operating a bicycle on a one-way street or highway with two or more marked traffic lanes, may ride as near the left-hand curb or edge of such roadway as practicable.

Is that a law or more of a recommendation?

I do remember something about this in driver's ed back in high school but never thought much about it as I didn't ride a bike at the time.

I want a bigger version of the avatar I have. 50x50 just doesn't work.

in vancouver bc canada, your actually suppose to ride your bike on the road not the sidewalk, and in many places theres actually a bike lane on the road, but not always like in downtown vancouver, but your still expected to ride on the road lol.

That is a funny story.

Here the laws are the same way - you must ride bicycles on the road (not sidewalks) if you're over age 12. In addition, you must ride on the right side, just like traffic.
