Can't play CDs

When I open a CD as a folder and click on a track, Winamp skips around finally playing a track farther down the play list, thus I can't play tracks near the beginning. Winamp will play wav, mp3, and midi from the hard drive but won't play off either of my CD drives. Windows media and iTunes play flawlessly from the drive. Had this problem with 5.x Winamp (don't remember precise version), upgraded to 5.531 but problem persists.

Running XP Pro sp2.

A bit of additional info.

Just tried playing wav files and mp3 files off the drives--they work fine--it appears to be cda files that are causing the problem.

It also seems to cycle endlessly through CDDB searching--can I turn CDDB off?
