Another one: Winamp 5.54 crashes
Hello there,
I'm using Winamp for several years on my WinXP Pro (German) machine and normally it works just fine (after disabling all the bundling waste and senseless, performance eating plugins and AOL-Video porn channels). But today after I've tried to upgrade my 5.531 to 5.54 Winamp crashed immediately after selecting the first file out of my Media Library. I've tried a complete reinstall of Winamp including deleting everything related to Winamp before, I've reinstalled 5.531 (which worked just fine) and tried the upgrade another time (crash.) and then tried a vanilla install again. But 5.54 was not able to work for me. I also tried different versions of the installer to assure that my problems are not caused any possible corruption of the installer. I used the following settings in the Installer: I did Install: Winamp (required) Multimedia Engine (everything) Winamp Library: -Winamp Media Library -Core Media Library Components -Transcoding Tool -Replay Gain Analysis Tool -Auto Tagger -Playlist Generator -Portable Media Player Support User Interface Extensions: -Global Hotkey Support -Extended Jump to File Support Visualisations (everything) Languages: -English -German/Deutsch I did NOT install: Winamp Agent (Surprise!) Winamp Library: -Winamp Dashboard (Another Surprise) -Podcast Directory -Remote Media -Online Media User Interface Extensions -Nullsoft Tray Control -Modern Skin Support -Winamp DropBox Languages: -The remaining ones :-) The thing is, that the normal playback of various formats didn't trigger the crash but it immediately occurred after I've selected a file in the Media Library. Therefore I'm guessing that this behaviour is somehow connected to the "More Information"-Area at the bottom of the Media Library. In the new version this area looks different to the old one. Displaying informations in this area in the old version is no problem at all. If you need further informations I'd like to help as fast as possible. |
Please zip up and attach both your "List of Plugins" and HijackThis logs, and include as much detail as possible about the crash error message:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#specs The 'Show Info' panel at the bottom of the Local Media views is just an embedded Internet Explorer page, so this suggests a problem with your Internet Explorer. Also, I know you said you unchecked Modern Skin Support, but could you please try checking it and see if the problem persists - just to get confirmation that some of those online features don't require any of the wasabi features provided by freeform skin support. All it installs is plugins\gen_ff.dll, plugins\freeform dir & 3 Skins. You can still continue to use the Classic skin and you'll never even know the Modern Skin Support is there. Does it still crash if you uncheck "Display 'Show Info' in media and album views" under: Prefs -> Media Library -> Local Media -> Options tab? |

Hello DJ Egg, thanks for your fast response.
Enabling "Modern Skin Support" seems to be a solution to this problem. The funny thing is, that after disabling it again (doing a install "over" the version containing it) the problem did not return. Although I don't know how we could narrow down this case I've attached the requested material. |
Hmm, interesting.
Installing straight on top but with Modern Skin Support unchecked (when it was checked on the previous install) will maybe just delete plugins\gen_ff.dll and the Winamp Modern, Bento and Big Bento skins in the skins folder. It possibly doesn't delete the plugins\freeform folder or some of the required system\.w5s files... I'm not rightly sure, but I'll look into it. |
The logs I've included are the state after the "on top" installation
|
Yeah, I can see that gen_ff.dll is no longer there, and that all the system\*.w5s files are there, but alas, One For Nunz doesn't detect (or list the contents of) the plugins\freeform folder.
As I said, it could be that the Info Pane requires some extra components that are only installed with 'modern skin support' (e.g. the plugins\freeform folder and/or some extra system\*.w5s files), none of which are removed if you reinstall but uncheck 'modern skin support'. |
If your guess is correct, this should be investigated further by the devs because if the function of winamp relies on parts that aren't installed if you untick the "wrong" options this is very bad for the karma and uninformed users...
|
Yup. Absolutely.
The NowPlaying & InfoPane features were modified/enhanced for 5.54, so it's possible that the installer needs tweaking. I'll look into it on Monday... |
Looks like it's system\dlmgr.w5s to blame.
That file is installed with Modern Skin Support, but if I remove it, then InfoPane in Local Media views crashes Winamp when I click on an item (and when using the Classic skin). |

I'm attaching the fix here, for anyone else with the same problem.
Unzip dlmgr.w5s to %ProgramFiles%\Winamp\System Note that we'll also make sure dlmgr.w5s is installed alongside Local Media in the next release, and we'll also make sure that Winamp doesn't crash if dlmgr.w5s is missing, eg. if user manually deletes it (though they'll probably get some other script error instead and the InfoPane thing won't work - which is better than crashing). |
Not for me!
I upgraded to 5.54 Pro from whatever the previous Pro version was. I did it towards the end of the workday on Wednesday, July 9th. I had no problems until this morning. In less than an hour, WinAmp has crashed four times - twice before and twice after a system reboot.
I downloaded the dlmgr file, and replaced the dlmgr file already there (same size) with that one. I started it up again, and the fourth crash happened before one song was done. Each crash has been very fast after starting/restarting. I'm going to download and reinstall 5.54 with the modern skins option unchecked, but I got the impression that the dlmgr file was supposed to fix that particular issue. If I'm still having a problem, then I'll load HJT on this machine (new computer, new job, new company), and we'll go from there. |
Enabling "Modern Skin Support" at first install is the solution to this problem on my computer as well.
Thanks a lot. |
