why is the first second of every song cut off when playing

At a guess, because you've enabled the "Remove silence at beginning/end of track" feature in DirectSound Output
(Prefs -> Plugins -> Output -> out_ds -> config -> Other tab)
and you've set the Cut-Off value too high...
