Winamp crashes when windows speaker output isn't enabled

I play my music through my 5.1 sound system, and therefore send it through my SPDIF optical output to my reciever.

However, when I don't have the regular 'Speakers' output selected, Winamp crashes on startup. (Standard program has stopped working window).

I have the SPDIF selected in the program settings, so even if I start the program with "the wrong" output enabled, the sound comes from the correct speakers. But it's annoying to have to swap back and forth to "Speakers" just to get Winamp started.

I'm running Vista 64 bit, latest Winamp release (5.552)
