Winamp freeze Window 7 box solid
Hi, great fan of Winamp.
I recently move to Window 7 x64 rc1 due to memory requirement of some software I run. Unfortunately, that spell disaster for Winamp who now not only freezes, but freeze the whole box solid. No BSOD, just completely frozen computer. It seem to happen mostly when I try to manage file, like if I create a new playlist and try to drag audio file to it, boom, instant freeze, or if I even hover over the "send to". Happen whether there's audio going on or not. Doesn't freeze when just playing back of single file. Window media player work fine, so is Foobar and media center on this box. Winamp 5.56 full, clean install, no extra plugin whatsoever. Tried running Winamp in compatibility mode, no difference, turned UAC on-off, no difference. Window 7 x64 rc1 build 7100. Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P (F6 Bios) Intel Q 6600 8 GB DDR2 Ram 5-5-5-18 Radeon 4850, latest drivers M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (Vista drivers) 1 WD 160 GB SATA HD (boot) 2 Seagate 500 GB SATA HD 1 WD 1TB SATA HD |
Erphmmm, are the devs actually reading this board, or do we write here for nothing?
|
I am also getting this problem. Any word on a fix?
|
Exact same thing began happening to me only moments ago. Using Windows 7 x64 with the latest release of Winamp. Have been using Winamp every day since I first installed 7 and have never had a problem.
When I went to make a new playlist (using Send To:), my entire system froze and had to do a hard reboot. Thought it was just an internal error and didn't think anything of it until I started Winamp back up again and tried to make the playlist. Once again, total freeze. I just updated 7 today with the following: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260) Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (KB973924) Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (KB971091) Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB973923) Seeing as how the problem began immediately after installing these updates, I'm sure it has to be one of them. Does Winamp use the Visual C++ Redistributable by any chance? That's the only update I can think of that may have caused this problem, seeing as how so many programs for Windows use the Redistributable Packages. |
Make a lot of sense ghostofmccleve. For me, Winamp froze from day one, but I my install of Win 7 is very recent, and I updated everything Window before installing any other software.
I'm surprised that nobody from Winamp is chiming in, this is a very serious problem. I mean, a bug is one thing, but a flaw that takes a whole system down is quite another. |

That being said, though, 7 has done an amazing job in terms of compatibility, so I was a little surprised that this began to happen with Winamp. I'm sure the problem will be addressed, but I do wish it were sooner than later, only because I hate not being able to use Winamp. EDIT: Ha ha, Kn0tte! You and I were thinking along the same lines! |
You're surprised that no one from the dev-team replies to you?
Mm... maybe because Winamp doesn't support Windows 7 yet? And maybe because W7 is only in RC-state, ie. not released yet..? Heh, I'm just telling you what I know.. ;) EDIT: ghostofmccleve posted while I was writing.. :P |
Is Winamp installed on Vista x64 system working once the latest C++ library update are applied? Anybody knows? Might help narrow the problem down...

Running Windows 7 RTM (the production version released to manufactiring).
Running current Winamp Pro. Winamp has always worked fine for me on Win 7 (Beta, RC, and RTM)...until I today put in a new CD I got from Amazon (The Postal Service, Give Up). The machine locked up solid, and the only way to clear the problem is to hold the power button until the systems powers down. I appreciate that Winamp "doesn't support Win 7"...but folks let's be realistic here, we're not talking Beta or RC versions. Winamp is locking up the production version of Windows 7, which a great many folks are going to be running RSN. The simple fact is that the Win 7 code has been around for ages, and I personally don't know of a single other popular application that has this sort of problem. It's time for Winamp to publish a fix and/or update. |
I experienced this as well the other day. As soon as I hit the "Rip" button, my whole system froze like it hasn't since Windows 95.
This line about not supporting Windows 7 seems a bit stubborn now that we're so close to the release date. I think one prickly moderator here said a while ago that we shouldn't take for granted that it would be supported after release, either. It almost makes me wonder if Winamp itself will be supported for very much longer. |
Hi, just wanted to say that I'm having the same problem.
I'm using latest Winamp on Windows 7 RC 32bit. Hovering over the "Send to" menu item freezes the whole OS for good. If you could please post how you accomplished this amazing feat then someone could probably create a nice virus with it. |
Update: After freezing my system for the second time it seems that the device driver of my Aureon PCI soundcard got screwed up. I had to reinstall my device driver to get it working again.

Hi all,
you can prevent Winamp from freezing Windows 7: "Disable Sonic Engine in the Nullsoft CD Plug-in (in_cdda.dll) and Uninstall the Nullsoft Rip & Burn plug-in (ml_disc.dll)" Source: Forum post (forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=2532859) HTH |

WinAmp freeze Windows 7
Hi everyone,
I got exactly the same problem on two very different machines, using Windows 7 Enterprise (Spanish) (No beta or RC). Every time I click on the "Send To" menu the computer freezes completely. No response for ctrl-alt-del, nothing except take the plunge and do a "hardware interruption". He he. One is an Intel DP35DU motherboard, Core 2 Quad Q9600, 8Gb RAM, RAID disks (2 x 1Tb). The other is a Dell XPS 1710 Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz, 320HD. Both are using last drivers for every device and no other software exhibits the problem I followed bimmbamm advice and disabled the Sonic Engine in Nullsoft CD Plug-in and uninstalled the Nullsoft Rip & Burn plug-in and now I can use the "Send to" option to convert files to another formats or to send tracks to a playlist. But I bought WinAmp PRO years ago because I wanted to RIP CD's at full speed. Now I can't because I unistalled the RIP plug-in. Any word from Nullsoft? no? Nobody? Must I switch to MonkeyMedia or another player until there's a clue about this problem? |
Winamp freezes Windows 7 64bit
I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with the latest updates and Winamp 5.57
Hardware: Q6600, 6GB RAM, P5-KC, 7300LE, no optical drives When rightclicking on the "send to" menue, the whole pc freezes. I have also Deamon Tools Lite 4.35 installed. Since i have disabled the virtual drives in Daemon Tools, no more freezes occured and everything is working fine. Ok... Apart from the fact that i have to turn on the virtual drives everytime i need them and disable them again as soon as possible. |

And of course this still isn't fixed in the latest build.
|
Upgraded to Win7 a few days back. It's great to see that applications I could use on XP with no problem fail to run on Win7. That and they have yet to be fixed almost a year later. As you can tell, I too suffer from this exact problem. Tried running winamp under compatibility which begets lots of script errors.
|
Yeah, because of this problem, I have a really strained relationship with Winamp now. I never use "Send to:", but my machine freezes whenever I try to rip a CD or when I drag a particular album to the tree area in the Media Library. I don't use any virtual drives and I don't have any third-party plug-ins installed. I uninstalled the Sonic engine, but that didn't seem to help.
I've actually switched to a succession of other music players since I've had this problem, but in the end, none of them have as many of the features that are essential to me as Winamp does. Still, the stack of CD's waiting to be ripped is getting taller and taller.... |
I also just suffered this bug. I never use "send to" -- at all -- yet I accidentally hovered on the menu item and my machine stopped responding. Mouse stopped moving, Ctrl + Shift + Esc didn't work, Ctrl + Alt + Del didn't work. Nothing. Waited for a while to let it do whatever it was doing and still nothing. Had to force shutdown my comp which resulted in lost work. This reminds me of the good ol' days of winamp where it'd randomly cause a BSOD on VBR files back on win98.
All other players are shite compared to winamp. AOL should opensource the code for winamp. I'm sure many people would be happy to contribute even if the license stayed restrictive (myself included). I just want a stable music player. |
can you confirm it happens without ml_disc present? as i think the issue is with the Sonic Burning Engine but i'm still trying to find the time to sort out a test build to see if that resolves the issue (as i'm not able to directly reproduce it currently).

Other than the issue I had yesterday activating the paid version that I found a work-around for, Winamp 5572 Pro is 100% stable on my system.
My install was a custom one. I never install the Agent, and I chose not to install the Winamp Detector Plugin (unneeded). Every other option was selected and installed. I run a version of an ASIO output plugin that also works flawelessly (out_asio_v700.zip). I use the SSE2 binaries for this. The only other plugin that I have installed is the latest Monkey's Audio input plugin. I run 64-bit Windows 7 Professional on an Intel DX58S0 motherboard. |
I'm running Winamp 5.581 on Windows 7 Build 7600 and have been having this same problem the entire time. I use Winamp to transfer songs to my iPod and because it used that Send To box, it froze every time.
What I did that, it seems *knock on wood*, has fixed it is: C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe Right click -> Properties Under the Compatibility tab, under Privilege Level check "Run this program as an administrator" I don't know why, but that seemed to do it for me - hope it works for everyone else. Good luck. |
Winamp freezing only when adding files to a playlist
i have the same problem as the thread originator. I recently installed the newest version 5.601 on 2/28 - the app had been running great. it located all of my music (which i have all on one drive) and i was able to right click to create new playlists on the fly for the last two days. then, just out of the blue my right clicking caused the entrie windows7 32bit os to lock, haulting all applications. i have tried previously listed suggestions with no success..
This is the same i have experience since installing version 5.5x. I use both a windows 7 64bit and a 32bit pc's and sad to say that i have had to resort to vlc and even *blah phooey*windows media player as my standard players since this issue with winamp. i understand that many others are not having this issue or maybe they are just not reporting it..but this sux... I had been a diehard winamp user for the last 7 years. i enjoy the queing, on the fly song title editing, the drag and drop ease, playlist creating (when it works) and just overall ease of use. but at this point imma have to go back to *blah phooey*windows media player cause winamp locks my box if i try to add a song to a play list. if any thread leader wants to use me as a test bunny im here.. send me an email and we can create a session 2 display the issue and troubleshoot... I WANT TO USE YOUR STUFF but not if it crashes my box... ...sorry for the rant but if anyone has any ideas hit me back.. thx |
i just found this with some success, taken from http://masterdownhillgames.blogspot....windows-7.html Winamp, Daemon Tools and Windows 7
Tuesday, June 08, 2010 Apparently the current versions of the Winamp plug-ins "Nullsoft CD Plug-in" (in_cdda.dll) and "Nullsoft Rip & Burn Plug-in" (ml_disc.dll) cause Windows 7 systems with Daemon Tools (or similar virtual disc drives installed) to completely lock the system when right clicking any song/album/artist and opening the Send To menu. Yikes. ml_disc.dll is used to provide burning/ripping support, while in_cdda.dll allows Winamp to use your optical drives. Lockups are easily worked-around by going into your Winamp installation's "plugins" folder and deleting ml_disc.dll, and possibly in_cdda.dll if it still happens. You could also move them out of the Winamp folder entirely to achieve the same effect. If you'd rather keep this functionality, the other workaround for now is equally easy: just uninstall whatever virtual disc software you use. If you can't live without either, you can always use hotkeys instead of the menu. I just removed the plug-ins since all my music is already ripped. Worse comes to worst, I can just put the plug-ins back into the "plugins" folder, rip and move them back out. But, I hope they fix this before I need to bother with all that. maybe this will help someone else.. |
Yeah, uninstalling the virtual drive and using WMP instead of Winamp to play music CD fix it for me.
I'm just glad I haven't paid for the commercial version of Winamp, this is an extremely serious bug that's easy to replicate yet it's been there for years so it shows the complete lack of support from the developers. |
moving past win7 bugs...
im also glad this works....
there is not another app that "just" plays music as well. |
it's been mentioned in many threads to remove ml_disc (even in my earlier posts in this thread so it's good to see that people are reading things before posting *shrugs* ).
and if the devs could reproduce it then it would have been fixed but no one can, hell i've tried multiple setups (and run with virtual drives normally) and have never been able to get a lockup. the worst bugs to fix are those that cannot be reproduced. -daz |
It could possible be a driver conflict, do you have any other audio player that might have registered itself as the default for certain file types?
|
I have Win7 32bit and immediately got these freezes when I installed and used Winamp 5.601, especially when opening the "Send To" menu. But I also got it just playing music once. I only wanted to use Winamp to WiFi sync music to my Droid X. MediaMonkey is a far superior music management software for larger music collections, but doesnt provide WiFi sync yet. Thus I was willing to try out Winamp.
I removed the Winamp plug-ins "in_cdda.dll" and "ml_disc.dll" from the C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\ folder as suggested above. PROBLEM SOLVED! I also received the cryptic "There was a problem installing components. cd ripping/burning may not function properly.. -1" error on install, but didn't find any good suggestions except for disabling Sonic in the preferences, which didnt fix the freezes. Very surprising this type of critical bug is so hard for devs to repro. |
