Winamp won't stay open

I open Winamp. The program loads and a few seconds later shuts down on its own (No, I haven't done anything or tried to do anything).

This happens when I have my phone/mp3 player (Nokia N85) connected via USB cable. I am not able to use Winamp to sync with my phone/player or to use Winamp at all while the phone is connected.

Winamp 5.56
Windows XP (SR3)
Nokia N85 (Symbian OS 9.3, S60 3rd ed, Feature Pack 2)

Any solutions? Thanks.

i have the same problem with my samsung p3 mp3 player, winamp works fine unless the p3 is plugged in, it tries to read it for a while then just closes itself

emacee1701 12th September 2009 12:38

OK, I did a clean reinstall of Winamp Pro 5.56 (which I downloaded today). I selected Full Install. No other plugins were installed.

I am using a Dell 8250 with a Pentium 4 2.4GHz and 512MB of RAM. DirectX Ver 9.0c. SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio sound card and NVidia GeoForce MX20 video card.

Winamp still shuts down a few seconds after loading when my Nokia N85 phone is connected via the USB port but now I get the Windows Error Message:
Winamp has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Error signature
App name: winamp.exe AppVer: 5.5.6.2512 ModName:portabledevicetypes.dll
ModVer: 5.2.5721.5145 Offset: 00007a3e

A poster on a Nokia User forum said this problem might relate to Windows Media Player 11 (and that it did not occur with earlier versions of WMP). I tried rolling back WMP and the problem did not occur but Windows Update restored version 11 of WMP (and the problem occurred again). I'd rather not have to choose between Winamp and WMP. Is there any way around this so I can use Winamp with my phone/media player? Thanks.

I've posted about this behaviour as well - No response.

Winamp has been updated since, but the bug still persists.

Kurt Blanchard 13th September 2009 02:49

got tired of winamp and tried mediamonkey and now i have a program that dwarfs winamps abilities, much better tagging and album pic retrieval abilities, better all around

Kurt Blanchard 13th September 2009 02:54

and yes, the burning question... mediamonkey loves my samsung yp-p3 player and doesn't 'wink out' like winamp when i enque it into my port hub, peace at last

It is very interesting how you all list your problems and complaints, but NOBODY follows instructions!!!

emacee1701 17th September 2009 08:37

Dear Wally,

I followed your instructions. To paraphrase you, the "insiders" around here make up rules but NOBODY provides useful information.

I did search past postings for information. What I found is this problem has been going on for some time. Winamp has been updated since it was first reported. The problem has not been fixed.

Winamp promotes itself as a sync tool for portable/mobile players and doesn't fix a problem that keeps anyone from using Winamp to sync: You can't sync unless your player is plugged in. When your player is plugged in, you can't use Winamp.

On top of everything else, I paid for Winamp. I got the pro version because I liked the program, that is I liked the program until I got a media phone. As a paying customer, I think I have the right to complain when something doesn't work as it is supposed to.l

Have a nice day.

a new bit of data that will help you to now use winamp with your samsung 16gb p3 mp3 player is to simply open the browser within winamp before it can read your p3 and leave it there long enough to let winamp read the p3 then go back to library and you will find it loaded up, nice workaround. he he works for me. (still like mediamonkey for some things, thier music database is better and they have more and better album covers) winamp is catching up i guess, but for now this works...

Kurt Blanchard 23rd September 2009 00:07

rats the browser trick kept it open but then winamp changed it's behavior, and maxed my ram (2gb) then froze. i had to ctrl-alt-del to close the app. arrgh. maybe if i plant the mediamonkey plugin in winamp hmm we'll see

Kurt Blanchard 23rd September 2009 00:23

found the plugins put em in reinstalled winamp and YES it worked ahhhhhhh

Kurt Blanchard 23rd September 2009 00:59

and then it crashed again after awhile oh well guess we'll haveta wait for a new version of winamp to fix this issue oh boy

emacee1701 10th November 2009 14:33

Finally found a solution:

Uninstalling the pmp.dll files stops WinAmp from crashing but I can't access my Nokia device through WinAmp.

Rolling back to WMP 10 also stopped WinAmp from crashing but I kept getting prompted to upgrade.

Through trial and error, I discovered Winamp does not crash when I connect in Mass Transfer mode. In Mass Transfer mode I can use WinAmp to sync library files and my Nokia device, and I can play files on my device through WinAmp on my PC. I can also transfer files manually between my PC and my phone using Internet Explorer.
