Win 7 and failed 5.56 install

I have clean installed Windows 7, Home Premium 32 bit, on my Dell laptop.

I have not yet run any sound software, or running anything else whilst trying to install, but hit problems when I tried to install Winamp Pro 5.56. Tried to install, hit problem, uninstalled (*see below), reinstalled hit problem then uninstalled (*see below) again!

Early on in install I got this mesage:-

---------------------------
Winamp Installer
---------------------------
There was a problem installing components. CD Ripping/Burning may not function properly.. '-1'
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

*When I try to uninstall the broken Winamp I need to manually remove:-

C: \ Program Files\Winamp;-

Plugins folder
Elevator.exe
elevatorps.dll
nscrt.dll

Plugins folder is removed but the others will not delete with the message that a file is open in Elevator.exe. A reboot cures this problem.

The other software I have, so far, installed and is working ok, is Photoshop Elements 7 and Firefox browser.

I did have 5.56 pro running on the previous OS; Vista Home Premium.

Since this install/uninstall of Winamp I have successfully installed Open Office 3.1.1

Any advice please?

I'm having Win7 problems too. The only thing I can offer is with elevator.exe.

It's common for Winamp to leave those files after running the uninstaller. It's not a bug in the software. It has to do with how it deals with Vista and Win7's UAC (User Account Control).

You can remove elevator.exe and the other files that are left over after uninstalling Winamp without having to reboot. Just hit ctrl-alt-del and run Windows Task Manager, select the 'Processes' tab, select Elevator.exe in the 'Image Name' column, and click 'End Process'.

At that point you can delete the files that remain after uninstalling Winamp

Did you check to see if the rest of Winamps functions were working properly before you uninstalled it?

From the "Known Winamp 5 Bugs"-thread (if this is the issue):

I take that the fact that your post has not been removed shows that the moderators of this site encourage obscenity and extreme bad manners and please don't tell that it is a joke and I should lighten up.

Indeed... I'll be polite and keep my opinions on net-cruizer comments to myself.

But check out the fix I worked out for v5.56 on my system athegn. Post back with your results.
