Notes:

Video Support:

The D3D Renderer requires DirectX9 or higher
(The installer will upgrade DirectX on Win2k/XP, if required)

The fullscreen OSD requires d3dx9_24.dll or higher on Win2k/XP and d3dx9_32.dll or higher on Win7
(the installer will download/install these, if required)

The fullscreen OSD is not set in stone and is liable to change (eg. width/position/look/features/etc),
if not for 5.57F then maybe for forthcoming releases... though all comments/criticisms are welcome :-)

Supported Formats:

in_mp4 supports:
video: h.264 (avc), h.263, mp4v2 (simple/advanced), jpeg (slideshow)
audio: mp3, aac (lc/he), 3gp, ac3, pcm/u-law

in_mkv supports:
video: h264 (avc), h263, mp4v2
(theora support hopefully to come later, mpeg-1 & 2 not supported)
audio: mp3, aac, ac3, vorbis
(dts not currently supported / video-only files might not play)

in_flv supports:
video: h263, h264 (avc), vp6
audio: mp3, aac, adpcm

in_avi supports:
video: h264 (avc), divx4, divx5, xvid, vp6, Techsmith (TSCC/Camtasia screen capture/RGB555/RGB565), RLE (16bpp & 8bpp compressed bitmaps), UYVY, Motion JPEG (M-JPEG)
audio: mp3, aac, ac3, pcm (wav, a-law, u-law, etc), ms-adpcm, ima adpcm, dsp truespeech

-Old/unsupported AVI formats (eg. divx3, cinepack, ms-video-1, cram, ms-mpeg4/mp42/mp43, etc) will be passed on to DirectShow instead.

-Techsmith, UYVY & RLE video support is via bmp.w5s

-MJPEG slideshow support is via jpeg.w5s

-For non-Pro installations, mpeg-4 (h263, h264, divx, xvid, mp4v, etc) video handling will be the same as in 5.56, i.e. in_avi will pass on all videos with mpeg-4 content to in_dshow, and in_mp4 (and now also in_mkv) will play audio-only.

-To re-enable old 5.56 behaviour, remove in_avi.dll & in_mkv.dll, remove MP4 and M4V from in_mp4 config, and re-add all of AVI, MKV, MP4 & M4V to in_dshow config extension list....

-The AC3 decoder (for AVI, MKV & MP4) is in the Winamp Essentials pack (see below)
(as is the H.263 decoder, like before).
Though both are included in the beta builds (but won't be in the Final build).

-Re: Native h.264 decoder for in_nsv
Non-Pro users will still be able to use the 3rd-party h.264 decoder for in_nsv.
w5s files/decoders take precedence over dll's, so Pro users can even keep the 3rd-party decoder present
(which won't be used unless you remove h264.w5s... which isn't recommended...)

Other:

Re: Improved: [ml_wire] Redesigned Podcast Directory view:
This will not be going live until 5.57 Final release,
so for now, you'll still see the old view in Media Library -> Podcast Directory.

Likewise for the new Orgler login dialog, which is all mainly serverside code,
though the Winamp & AOL logins should hopefully be working in the next day or so
(until then you'll probably just get a "No login providers available" error message).

The Winamp Application Detect browser plugins for IE & Firefox basically allow winamp.com and other participating sites (shoutcast.com, spinner.com, etc) to detect Winamp presence & version and deliver appropriate content
(eg. to determine whether the installed version supports the new winamp:// protocol).
The plugins do not collect/send any other data whatsoever. Infact, you won't even notice that they're there....

Undocumented:

New commandline switches for manipulating ml playlists:

winamp.exe /ADDPLAYLIST "x:\path\to\playlist.m3u" "playlist name" {GUID}
winamp.exe /CREATEPLAYLIST "Playlist Name" {GUID}
winamp.exe /APPENDPLAYLIST {GUID} filename.mp3

where {GUID} is a unique GUID as created by eg. Windows SDK GUID Generator.
For /APPENDPLAYLIST you would need to use the corresponding existing GUID as designated by Winamp
(see %appdata%\winamp\plugins\ml\playlists.xml)

feed:// & pcast:// & winamp:// protocol handler commandline switch:
"x:\path\to\winamp.exe" /HANDLE %1

Accelerator (keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys) changes:

Open Playlist (Ctrl+O) & Save Playlist (Ctrl+S) now work globally;
Added Ctrl+Alt+B for "Add current to bookmarks" (note, old Alt+I still works in Classic skin and also in WA-Modern pledit,
but can never work in Bento because Alt+I is the global shortcut for the View menu);
Changed "Load EQ Preset" from Ctrl+S to Ctrl+Alt+S (Classic EQ only).

Localization improvements:

Winamp can now load extra .lng files from <LANGDIR>\<language-identifier>\*.lng
e.g. c:\program files\winamp\lang\ru-ru\gen_3rdparty.lng

Re: New info page for lang pack developers in About Winamp dialog:
More Info

nsutil:

nsutil.dll in the Winamp root dir is a new shared library for common functions, such as 8-bit to 16-bit conversion,
float-to-pcm conversion, alpha premultiplying, FFT, infinite impulse response, VU meter calc, and more.
Do not delete it, or bad things are likely to happen...

Reporting Bugs:

Please report any issues with the beta in this thread only!
Make sure your report is complete, according to the sticky threads in Bug Reports, ie.
Clean install, no 3rd-party plugins, list of plugins, full step-by-step method of reproduction, relevant system specs,
exact error messages, screenshots, which skin (one of Classic, Modern, or Bento only, or all three), links to sample files, etc.
If error reports, screenshots, sample files, etc are smaller than 200kb, then please attach them to your post here. Otherwise, please upload to one of stashbox.org, mediafire.com, or sendspace.com and post the url here (no rapidshare or imageshack or similar links please).

Please do not report script errors in online services, info viewer, etc.
Script errors are enabled in the beta builds for debugging purposes, but are disabled in final builds.

For problems with AVI, MKV & MP4/M4V videos, be sure to also tell us what the video & audio codecs are...
Relevant info can be found via the "View File Info" (Alt+3) dialog
(if attaching a screenshot for AVI/MKV, be sure to make Codec ID/Name columns wide enough first).

Note that incomplete/lame bug reports may be totally ignored.

__________________________________________________________________________

Known Bugs/Issues:

-The installer takes longer than before to unpack *

-The installer might appear to freeze on older/slower systems during the "Optimizing..." phase towards the end.
- Please be patient. It hasn't frozen, and will get there eventually... *

-Winamp Application Detect is always checkmarked on the Choose Components page of the Installer Options

-If unchecked, the installer may still create an empty "%ProgramFiles%\Winamp Detect" folder *

-in_avi.dll & in_mkv.dll aren't removed by the uninstaller *

-Video Prefs aren't fully hooked up yet... some options don't work... expect changes for 5.57 Final

-Subtitle support isn't implemented yet (.srt for AVI; Sub Station Alpha/Advanced SSA for MKV)

-File info & length/metadata detection for streaming (http) avi isn't implemented yet

-h.263 inside MP4 container still needs a lot of work

-MP4 video http streaming is buggy and not properly implemented yet...

-Seeking forward with the right keyboard cursor might be a bit funky with some AVI & MKV files *

-The new RG Preamp slider in Prefs -> Playback also controls Gain for files without RG applied!

-Winamp doesn't appear on mouse hover over Win7 taskbar thumbnail if Winamp is minimized to taskbar
- when a freeform skin (Bento, WA Modern, etc) is in use (works ok for Classic skins)

-The Win7 win+tab image is small (due to a limitation of the Windows API in drawing the image for multiple windows) *

-The Win7 alt/win+tab image might show an empty ml or pledit at times, and also doesn't update in real-time

-Aero Shake & Snap support aren't implemented (note, Snap might never be)

-The llama logo shows in Modern skin Notifier for tracks without albumart

-The new Dimension & Codec columns for videos in Local Media views might not populate on upgrades
- (ie. you'll need to use rt-click -> 'read metadata on selected items') *

-The Fullscreen OSD might not show at all on systems with the Intel r82945g express chipset, if using Intel drivers v6.13.
- Upgrading the drivers to v6.14 solves the problem. *

* = Fixed for 5.57F
* = non-issues or won't/can't be changed

Notes:

Winamp Version Check for Essentials Pack & Color Editor:

- Minimum Winamp version for installation is Winamp 5.57
- Installer provides a message and will abort, if minimum Winamp version isn't installed on the system
- I'll just increase the minimum version number in future, if a plug-in/component really requires it
- if Winamp couldn't be detected on the system in general, installer provides an info message and will abort

Flake encoder removal

- Winamp already ships a working flac encoder, so it wasn't really essential
- users really should use the tested & approved libflac for creating .flac files

Localization:

- updated example language file v1.14 available
- incomplete translations were disabled due compatibility issues
- translators still have time to provide updated language files for final

You can find more infos & the example language file in the Essentials Pack Localization Thread

DrO 8th December 2009 22:16

Language Pack Author Recognition:
-------------------------------------
There are two ways of showing people that you are the author of the language pack you have created.

The first is via a readme.txt file in the root of the wlz (like in the example wlz) which is shown on the localisation preferences page and can display any sensible message / information you require.

The second introduced as of the 5.57 client is to add a new dialog resource to your winamp.lng with an id of 1378 which will then be shown in Winamp's "About" dialog. The dialog resource will need to be the same size as the existing dialogs used for this and you're able to place anything you'd like. There are also string resource id 65532 & 65533 which can contain a paypal url or homepage link which will be activated when a button on the dialog with the same resource id is clicked by the user. (*)

The aim of this dialog is to allow you as the author to get a more noticeable credit for the work done with creating a language pack as we all know too well that it is not a quick process to do.

(*) Some of official language packs already have this implemented and can be used as a reference

ujay 9th December 2009 00:39

A few left overs.

Clicking the notifier can crash.
Notifications > 'Open Now Playing on click' should be disabled/greyed out if ml_nowplaying is not installed.

XP - Fresh installs only, something still looking for NSCRT at start up. Can be safely ignored.

Task bar integration http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....45#post2551645 is broken in win7 and may crash(e.g. Open file from Windows Explorer).
Please don't report any bugs here if you have it installed.
In fact, best uninstalled until the author has a chance to update.

SWEET!!! That's all I can say. Always lookin forwar to new Winamp!!

Chris000001 9th December 2009 02:49

Flac files still ignore the 'Fading' 'on first start' setting (not surprising since the change log doesn't say that it's fixed.) This is just a reminder that it's broken. :)

Zero2FiftyIn4 9th December 2009 04:09

Sweet I was going through update withdrawal. Others may complain about a lot of updates but I'm not in that group.

DigitalDJ 9th December 2009 12:51

Dear god I hope this fixes the video CPU usage in Windows 7. Fingers crossed.

Edit: Yes! Goodbye VLC, Hello Winamp!

MrX_1980 9th December 2009 15:34

Hello

Thanks for all the new features and bug fixes!

a) If I start Winamp without admin rights I can't enter the Pro Registration Code.
I get then a message "Registration key wrong" (or similar).
After I started Winamp with admin rights it works.
Either the user should get a warning message that he/she is not a admin or if possible it should work without admin rights.

Clean installation on PC_A (signature)

b) Look at the time at the picture (red rectangle)

c) Sometimes I get this after a few seconds/minutes

d) Settings seams to be only saved if Winamp is closing.
If Winamp crashes the taked settings are gone.

Thanks for the report...

Re: a) Invalid Registration Key error

Are you getting that error when trying to enter the reg key via: Winamp -> Prefs -> Winamp Pro -> Enter Reg Key?
Or only with the prompt which comes at the end of the Pro installation?

If the former, then have you disabled UAC on your system?

We'll debug it later (entering reg key when UAC is disabled)
but for me, when UAC is enabled, I always get the UAC prompt first when trying to enter the reg key or adjusting any settings (eg. Prefs -> File Types) which require registry-write privileges.

After clicking 'Yes' on the UAC prompt, then everything works.

I assume you aren't getting the UAC prompt, which means one of the following:

1. You must have disabled UAC, and it doesn't work if UAC is disabled
2. You've deleted Elevator.exe or elevatorps.dll from the Winamp folder, or they didn't get installed/registered properly.

Please confirm that those two files exist in the root of the Winamp installation dir.

Re: b) and c) video playback issues

Please could you attach a directX Diagnostic log (dxdiag.txt)
Start -> Run:
Type: dxdiag
Hit Enter
Wait for it to load
Click "Save all information"

Re: c)
Do you only get that weird video playback corruption for NSV files,
or also for other formats?

If only NSV, then is it just for NSV files with h.264 video
or does it also occur for NSV files with other video codecs, eg. vp6 ?

"d)" is expected behaviour.

We can't reproduce "e)"

Koopa 9th December 2009 16:32

MrX_1980:

d.) Is no issue, Winamp only saves it settings on close. So if you crashed, settings are gone.

You can install Time Restore & Autoplay plug-in from the Essentials Pack, it has an option, that Winamp periodly saves the settings.

Thanks for the beta! It feels, looks and works good so far. I will test more stuff tomorrow etc but here's my input so far:

Quote:

* Improved: VU meter optimizations
And that is..? Is it the "Toggle Beat Viz" in the modern skins (w/ Llama head-banging in the Winamp Modern skin)? Whatever you have done, it seems faster and a lot better with the W.M.Skin. Very good! :D But with Bento (Big at least) its really weird and fucked up, it "stops" on the edges when its a song with hard bass. You need to fix that.

Btw, isn't it possible that you can make it so that IF we use the Llama head-banging in the Winamp modern skin, it will STAY when restarting Winamp etc? Its a pain in the *you know what* to enable it every time I start up Winamp (if I want to use it that is). Make it so that it remembers if its enabled or not, please! It would be such a nice improvement! It will still be easy to disable it if thats wanted, no problem. :D

The last report for today:

After a little bit of AVI seeking Winamp hangs.
All informations (dxdiag, mediainfo, appcombat, minidump, ...) are in the zip.
I hope this help.

After installation Winamp crashes and persistent want to sent "silent" error feedback through the Microsoft Outlook. After that unfinished step, Winamp process consumes 50% CPU and hangs out the PC.
Only when I manually stop his process it will start up normally.

Pawel 9th December 2009 21:44

@Serpher
Have you send that error report (if I remember crash log should be in C:\). Just give some more info.
-Pawel

Ps: Also, could you check my langpack? Please, take a look and if you find some problems / translation issues, let me know. Thx.
Ps1: Pozdrawiam

Thanks for the info. I just looked into the Winamps options and found that myself. The archive is attached.

About the translation, you changed/added something?
For now I dont see any issues, but I'll search for it.

Koopa 9th December 2009 22:23

Serpher:

For any new Winamp release, translators have to update their language packs as well.

So any new Winamp option, is new in the language packs as well.

And a complete new thing, you can find in About Winamp dialog. ;)

For your bug report:

I guess you should provide more infos, take a look at Egg's first posting, to find, which infos are required.

@ Serpher

Can you try removing

F:\Program Files\MULTIMEDIA\Winamp\NSCRT.dll

or do a clean install.

@MrX_1980

Thanks for the reports

We've fixed a couple of issues with in_nsv (deadlock and intermittent crash on stop).
We haven't been able to reproduce the weird corruption issue though,
and would therefore need a link to a sample file...

Can't reproduce any of the other issues (no uac prompt when entering reg key, etc)

@Mr.Henky
It basically means that Winamp 5.57 is much more Windows 7 friendly than 5.56 was :-)

@Kn0tte
Yes, VU Meter = beat vis.
I can't reproduce the problem with Bento though...
And the llamas in Modern skin is an easter egg.

@Serpher
Change the "path to store data" in Prefs -> Error Feedback
Change it to a folder with write privileges, eg. My Documents, or %appdata%\winamp or whatever.

We really need to change the default path from C:\

You can also uncheck "Send Data" (so it doesn't try to send the report by email).
Then just attach the report.zip here instead (like you did above).

Hmm, yeah, try what Ujay says...
These nscrt.dll issues need looking into, especially seeing that we use msvcr90.dll now.
Also try removing the 3rd-party in_mp3hd.dll plugin.
Attaching your "list of plugins" is always helpful...

DJ Egg 10th December 2009 02:18

@Ujay

Do you maybe have Nullsoft Musepack Decoder Beta (in_mpc.dll) installed?

Looks like it requires/uses: %ProgramFiles%\Winamp\Plugins\nscrt.dll

ujay 10th December 2009 02:19

Found the source of my NSCRT errors.

Down to a special build w5s file in the System folder that never got cleaned out.

[edit] Surprised no one has mentioned the speed increase in the Media Library

LOL!! Why, becuz it shows a thumbnail of Winamp when you do a mouseover? That aero thumbnail/peek is barely even halfass done, as mentioned in this post anyways.
The part that gets me, is there was already a plugin that did WIN 7 thumbnail/peek perfectly, and this beta broke that.
The plugin should have just been included instead of the Winamp developers taking a try at it, or at least an option to disable Winamps attempt at it.

osmosis 10th December 2009 02:36

TheSaw just has to update his plugin to circumvent the official attempt.. it's not really THAT big of a deal.

DJ Egg 10th December 2009 05:14

It's not labelled a beta for nothing...

The aero peek/thumbnail implementation follows the standards, the same as other applications.
The only aspect which isn't working is mouseover to show Winamp from a minimized state when a modern skin is active... which is hardly a major deal.

Sorry, but I never even tried the 3rd-party plugin.
Did it also do all the alt/win+tab stuff?

And as osmosis said, the plugin can be fixed to work again, so please calm down :-)

It's also more Win7 (and Vista) friendly because things like elevation for File Type association and Pro Reg Key registration have been fixed.

osmosis 10th December 2009 05:41

Ah good to hear about the file type/elevation stuff, I just installed Winamp on a friend's Win7 machine the other day and was stunned by how weird it was being wrt stuff like that. Enq & Play Shell options in particular were crazy, if 5.56 wasn't running as Administrator and you viewed those prefs they got all messed up.

Venomaster 10th December 2009 06:08

Windows 7 32bit: Winamp essentials - time restorer (if activated) makes Winamp crash on startup. I was able to start Winamp only after deleting that .dll.

DrO 10th December 2009 07:27

Venomaster: where there any crash messages reported? really need something more to try to work against than just it crashes it on startup.

why not set vista_thumbnail=0 in the [winamp] section of winamp.ini as that may work to resolve in the incompatability still as i had to remove that when i installed the beta on my Win7 machine). though obviously no idea as i'm not in a position to try it out (and as i've not used the other plugin i don't know what the crash is anyway).

@Koopa
Thanks for info.

@ujay
Clean install helped.

@DJ Egg
I will send those reports myself. Shame that SMTP port 25 cannot be changed (in Poland that port is blocked by the national ISP).
List of my plugins is in my signature.

And i also found new bug.
Spectrum Analyzer visualisation works slower than in 5.56. Time Resolution is the same (15ms).

That is why you can use default system email client, instead of that built-in crash reporter. (I am sure your e-mail client has SMTP 587 port set). But you are right, it should be cofigurable, as not everyone use default port.

Im not using any email clients on my pc. I prefer webmail.

Playlist generator crash

Hi guys.

The playlist generator always crashed during third step - somewhere between 7000 and 8000 file. I have clean install. Crash logs attached.

--
Oh well - seems that i can't attach an archive here - so i've just uploaded it at rapidshare:

http://stashbox.org/730501/report.zip
http://stashbox.org/730501/report.zip

In case you need more info just tell me. It's default and clean installation.

[EDIT -> DJ Egg]

As stated in the "Reporting Bugs" section of the first post... no rapidshare links!

I've changed it to stashbox.org

However, you CAN attach zip files to posts.

The crash.log shows a crash in in_mp3.dll, not the playlist generator (ml_plg).

The log also references the following mp3's:

Jóhann Jóhannsson\And In The Endless Pause There Came The Sound Of Bees\01 - [Theme].mp3

\dustin o'halloran - 2006 - piano solos vol. 2\08 - [opus 35].mp3
...ant du m.nestrel].mp3
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.mp3
3. remix).mp3
\08 - [hole to feed (joebot remix)].mp3
death].mp3..mp3

I'm not sure what's going on there, but at a guess, one of those mp3's is corrupt,
or maybe the filepath is too long for Windows...?
