Internet Explorer New Tabs altered + solution
I've noticed that after a recent install of Winamp my new tabs in IE opened a page that was "powered by Winamp Search".
I'm not going to judge how useful or not this is; the problem was that I wanted my original "New Tab" page that allowed me to re-open recently closed windows/tabs back. What was even worse was that there seemed no way to do this. After a bit of googling I discovered that the problem resides in the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AboutURLs where the value "Tabs" has been modified. Now, apparently Winamp backed the original value in "bkup_Tabs" so it's just a matter of copy/paste or delete/rename. None the less, on a fresh install it the value should be "res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm". Now, a word to the people at Nullsoft: Naughty, naughty! This smells of malware. I know you want to promote your services but be decent about it. I don't recall checking any box that would've caused this behaviour in the install process (and if there was one, it's my bad but still, if I didn't spot it it's still sort of evil). Also if there is a documented way of undoing this, again, my bad, but it's pretty hard to find. |
I always try and avoid these things like the plague, so can't really help much.
The toolbar and search browser add ons are nothing to do with Winamp devs and are pushed out by AOL. As you might expect from AOL, you are forced to opt out, rather than the more honest approach of opting in, a commonplace enough scam to snare the unwary. (See 'Get the most out of Winamp' page in the installer) A quick search turned up the following : http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....93#post2498793 Hope this will sort it out for you. UJ |
I've come across the firefox toolbar fix before... Thing is, this does not concern a toolbar, it's the initial content of any new tab (the "New Tab" page) that's altered and there seems no friendly way of restoring it.
Also, sorry if I was misguided but still, someone needs to learn some etiquette. |
