Notifier doesn't show (Win 7)

Sometimes notifier doesn't show. I must restart winamp. That help for 4-5 songs but later notifier doesn't show again. I tried reinstall to different directory.

Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit

P.S. I'm sorry, my english isn't good :)

JonnyMac 1st April 2010 11:58

Are you using the Next Previous multimedia keys on your keyboard? If so, then it is a known issue.

robdog2004 1st April 2010 20:26

as jonny says this is known issue and is being fixed in the next release

aamp 2nd April 2010 16:04

Ok :), but notifier doesn't show if i click on song in windows.
P.S. End of Playback and Pause is showed always.

robdog2004 2nd April 2010 19:07

yep the developers know
5.58 will have the fix for it

aamp 2nd July 2010 11:47

New version is out and bug isn't repair :(

robdog2004 2nd July 2010 15:03

if you read the release notes they didnt do any tweaking to notifier yet
they have been working more on getting the video section fixed

JonnyMac 3rd July 2010 23:26

I inquired back stage and was told a bug fix was made for the Notifier issue just prior to the release of Winamp 5.58 and was included.

Does this happen with Winamp Modern skin or the Bento skins?

robdog2004 4th July 2010 01:03

the only other thing i can recommend is clean install of winamp
also to remove the pins on the win 7 taskbar
since the notifier is working correctly for me on win 7

other note check installed plugins any plugin outside of the winamps main plugins may cause issues with the notifier (specially the facebook plugin)

autonomous42 4th July 2010 05:08

I'm having the same problem, the notifier will disappear after some use. I just did another clean install and am testing again. I've also noticed that sometimes Winamp's volume in the Windows mixer will drop to the teens requiring me to bring it back up. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit with ReplayGain disabled. I'm thinking I should downgrade to 5.56 again until these issues are resolved.

robdog2004 4th July 2010 13:42

sounds like this maybe a 64bit issue

autonomous42 7th July 2010 22:32

It can't be exclusively an x64 issue because I don't have the problem in 5.56. In fact this little issue has forced me to downgrade to 5.56 again. I wanted to upgrade to 5.57 and 5.58 was promising, but they have the same issue with the notifier.

robdog2004 8th July 2010 01:25

i dont know what can be causing this
i use win7 32bit pro and i dont get the issue
are there any plugins installed that arent part of the main install
only asking since we want to be able to pin point where the issue lies

autonomous42 8th July 2010 19:01

No, I'm just using what comes with the installer. Is there other information you need to know? I'm willing to help squash this bug.

robdog2004 8th July 2010 22:10

ok getting puzzling
which skin do you use the most
is it just one skin you notice the problem more than another

autonomous42 8th July 2010 22:30

I only use Big Bento and haven't tried any other skins because I didn't feel the need to.

robdog2004 9th July 2010 00:00

ok not skin related
there must be something we are both missing

JonnyMac 9th July 2010 00:31

Notifications is a modern skin feature. There are different implementations (slight or otherwise) for notifications in different skins. Third party skins, may use a third party script for notifications.

If this issue only happens with the Bento skins and not the Winamp Modern skin, then that will give the developers better insight as to what may be causing the issue.

I have not been able to reproduce the issue described in this thread. I am using WinXP, by the way.

autonomous42 9th July 2010 22:17

I've switched back to 5.56 for the time being but will do a new clean install of 5.58. I'll also try out the Winamp Modern skin to see if the notifier also stops appearing. Since I'm on 7 x64, it could be an issue with 7 or the x86 compatibility layer. Will report back soon.

robdog2004 9th July 2010 23:40

you maybe on to something with the compatibility
since i am using the big bento skin on win 7 32bit and i am not getting the problem you are describing
let us know what you find and we will see if we can get this issue done with so no one else has it

DJ Egg 10th July 2010 01:53

It's a Bento notifier specific issue related to multi-threaded albumart.
Afaik, it doesn't happen with the Winamp Modern skin.

Instead of restarting Winamp, just hit F5 to reload the skin.

robdog2004 10th July 2010 02:05

thanks egg

autonomous42 10th July 2010 02:45

Thanks for clearing that up. Is a fix in the works? What do you mean by multithreaded album art?
I used the Modern skin for a while and didn't seem to have a problem with the notifier not showing up, however sometimes it wouldn't show album art.

robdog2004 10th July 2010 03:05

a fix must be in the works if dj knows about the issue
as for album art not showing
normally winamp looks in the file first, then looks for folder.jpg, and then it looks for (title).jpg
sometimes by the time it finds the file the notifier has most likely closed leaving the albumart blank (at least this is what i have gathered in knowledge)

DJ Egg 10th July 2010 03:14

The bug in Bento notifier occurred due to this change in 5.57

* Improved: [gen_ff] Multithreaded <AlbumArt/> object

Martin (Bento skin author) knows about the issue, but hasn't worked out a fix for it yet.

Sameh- 10th July 2010 05:41

Yeah, it was happening to me as well, even in the latest version. I've gone back to 5.56. Hopefully they fix it in the next update.

mugdowner 14th September 2010 22:15

Hi,
I have the same problem.

Using Win7 x64
Winamp 5.581
Big Bento
hearing shoutcast stations.

And most of the time the notifier doesn't show up. But sometimes it does, if i minimize and maximize same windows. Very infrequent.

I think after pausing and playing again, it works for some time again.

Is there still no solution?

DrO 14th September 2010 22:18

there was a minor fix made in the 5.58x branch but it looks like it doesn't resolve the issue for everyone so as to the answer, no there's no solution and from what i remember seeing said, it was going to require a fair bit of work to resolve which doesn't seem to be happening...

DJ Egg 15th September 2010 01:18

I find that hitting F5 to reload the skin usually fixes it...

Danez 7th April 2011 10:21

One Year after and bug is still present.

Agntx 4th July 2011 23:56

Yep, in my clean installation of Winamp this bug is still present like in 5.57, 5.58 and so on. I must back to old 5.56 again to resolve this problem.

sparked 5th July 2011 22:25

I also have this problem, which I started when moving to 5.56 to 5.57, and has continued with every version released since. Pressing F5 to reload skin seems to only work occasionally, and then only for a few minutes at a time. I have disabled the built-in Winamp notifier for now, and I am using the Toaster plug-in for a notifier until this bug is fixed, if it ever is.

Agntx 6th July 2011 20:31

I don't know why this bug is still present. I was waiting for fix since 5.57 was released. DJ Egg confirmed this problem, but after more than two years nothing was changed. I'm bored with this because I love notifier feature and don't like Toaster plugin with it's odd look. Yes, hitting F5 resolves problem, but only temporary and after playing couple of tracks notifier still is not showing - I see it only when I hit pause or stop. I wonder why this bug is not fixed after many signals from users. Still waiting for fix... or for new skin.

DrO 6th July 2011 22:06

it's due to a change in how the album art is looked up for the notifier which for some machines causing it to fail after a time though is generally better for most other machines - is basically changing from a synchronous to an asynchronous lookup and for some reason if it happens to failure / take too long then something in the notifier scripts causes anything with the notifier to fail.

it has been looked into at the time and was improved (as per Egg's posts) but it's a pain to try to fix something which cannot be reproduced easily or successfully (i've never managed to get it to happen despite trying many times) and now people are working on other things. yes a bug left for so long is annoying, but when there's little resources that's what happens.

as for a temp fix. i suppose the easiest way would be for someone to modify the notifier script(s) in the Bento skins to have it not show / lookup the albumart so the notifier will still be able to work.

so... would that be an acceptable option to have that done as a standalone patch (as i don't think removing the feature fully for those it works for would go down well)?

Agntx 10th July 2011 23:05

OK, now I understand almost everything about this issue. What do you mean saying "for some machines" - this bug appear only on Win7 x64 or what? I wonder in what cases (systems, configurations or so) we have this issue with notifier. Dj Egg said something about dependence between Bento skin and badly working notifier - he said, that fix for this hasn't worked out yet but author of Bento know about it. I also have problem with notifier when I playing audio CD - when I listen new track I have every time info "end of playing" instead of title or artist of now playing song. Yes, standalone patch is a good idea but who will do it when in many cases notifier still works great?

DrO 11th July 2011 08:02

the Bento author now works on other things so i highly doubt he'll work on a fix (i think he did the prior fix attempt but i'm not 100% on that).

i've no idea about the CD playback issue you're seeing.

i was volunteering to make the patch to remove the albumart from the notifier (as i've got access to some of the skin files needed) but there's no point in my trying to find time (which is tight as it anyway) on something which otherwise isn't wanted.

Just to add to Agntx's suspicsion, I use Windows 7 x64 as well, so it does seem to be linked into that. I would welcome a patch so that the Notifier works properly if there is sufficient demand for it, even if it does mean album art will be removed from it. I have another suggestion as well, which is that as you mentioned this problem arises from a change in how the album art is looked up, would it be possible for a patch or future update to include a section within Winamp Options to set how the album art for the notifier is looked up? It could be set to asynchronous by default, but gives people affected by this the option to change it so the notifier works properly with album art.

soundjack 28th August 2011 19:58

I'd love a patch for this... having the same problem for some time now and finally found this thread. The F5 tip is great, at least I don't have to quit winamp. Also using Windows 7 x64 and multimedia keys (or global hotkeys). I wouldn't mind not having the album art in the notification at all, as long as it it would show no matter what!

Thanks

IcySon55 21st September 2011 14:22

Running Winamp 5.621 on Win7x86 at work and Win7x64 at home and this notifier bug is still present. I'm sure it's low on the priority list but it is a glaring UI bug that many users notice. Can we get an update on this?

xpmule 6th October 2011 01:00

Never noticed until reading this post..
runnin v5.61 + Win 7 x64
No notifier at any anytime since i installed winamp (using installer)
