windows audion notification stops winamp

hi everybody

This is something recent
whenever windows audio notification happens (for example when a usb key is inserted or trying to close unsaved document etc.) I have a break in the music. very irritating.
usually the notification sound was heard over the music, the music was not silenced.

I'm running windows XP Pro SP3
Intel board
creative X-FI Elite sound board
winamp pro 5.58
asio4all

any ideas?
thank you

In addition to ^that^, close & restart Winamp after the DirectSound tweaks. Although not necessary, you may want to close Winamp, Windows and restart the computer. Some users have found changes don't fully take effect until a reboot.

didn't help

I tried what was suggested in the posts you linked, didn't work even after full system restart
I opened a notepad document wrote something on it and immediately closed it, the music from winamp was silent (though the track time keeps running) for about 5-10 seconds due to the notification sound from windows.

trying to download a new X-FI driver, though I doubt it will help since I was running my system with the current driver for over 2 years with no such problem

thank you
will appreciate any new ideas

You mentioned you have Are you using ASIO4ALL, so are you using a ASIO plug-in for Winamp? There are a couple...

After installing one of the plug-ins, it should be available in Winamp's output plug-ins selection. Select/highlight the plug-in and click the configure button. As far as I know, ASIO4ALL should be one of the selections in the plug-in's Output selection. I don't use ASIO, so this suggestion is not based on personal experience.

I'm using asio4all plugin for winamp for a long time, that's why I don't think its the source of the problem
I never tweaked its settings so nothing has changed with it in the past 2 years :-)

Please provide additional Winamp & system specs. Hopefully one of use will be able to spot what is causing the issue.

I don't see any "red flags" in the logs. Anyone else? However, have you tried using the ASIO output plug-in in Winamp? The current one is the DirectSound plug-in.

Winamp > Ctrl+P (for Preferences) > Plug-ins > Output > highlight/select the ASIO plug-in
The highlighted one is the current/active plug-in.

reinstalling the X-FI driver solved the problem
still I don't understand how it happened in the first place
thank you

I don't understand, I have the asio4all plugin for winamp and asio is working (I see the icon with the "play" picture in it whenever I listen to music)
am I mistaken?

JonnyMac 6th September 2010 16:58

Who knows what happened. Every so often there is that occasional unexplained hiccup. Not being a ASIO user, it is hard for me to know what it could have been. However, sometimes just simply updating or reinstalling sound drivers can fix audio problems that seemingly come out of nowhere.

I am not sure what you mean by, “I see the icon with the "play" picture in it whenever I listen to music”, is that part of the ASIO plug-in? Regardless, the issue is resolved. :)

Clonimus74 6th September 2010 18:27

yes the icon is an indication asio is working
anyway, the issue is resolved and I thank you for your help :-)
