Pro Tip: Allow WinAmp to communicate through Windows Firewall for WiFi Syncing
I honestly have no idea if this belongs here or in the Android forum since the two work in tandem. Since the issue for me is visually on the desktop client, I'll post here.
As most likely to be expected with it comes to Wireless devices, there's a good chance things may not go as one would hope. I do have to say that for whatever reason, I cannot get WiFi Syncing to work. I downloaded the Android app and activated WiFi Syncing. I downloaded the WinAmp 5.59 beta and installed it. After clicking the Devices section on the left, I could see my device! I attempted to connect to the device, got the "Connecting..." dialog, and then nothing. I exited WinAmp and reloaded it to try again. Still nothing. Then, all of a sudden, I couldn't see my device anymore. Then I could! Then I couldn't. Then I could! And repeat. Thinking that maybe I messed up something on my WinAmp install (since I upgraded from a previous version), I uninstalled WinAmp and deleted its folder from the Program Files directory (to ensure I had a nice and fresh install of WinAmp to work with) as well as its AppData folder for my profile. After installing WinAmp again, WinAmp refused to even suggest my device existed. Frustrated, I gave up and left it alone. Flash forward a few weeks. I decided to give WinAmp WiFi syncing a try again. Since my last attempt, I had restored my phone to Factory Default, so I reinstalled WinAmp for Android on it. After reenabling WiFi syncing on the device, I opened up WinAmp to try again. As before, WinAmp refused to acknowledge my device existed. Thinking maybe it was because I had Internet Connection Sharing enabled on my computer, I went ahead and disabled that, rebooted both my computer and my phone and tried again. My device still won't show up. After checking the settings on my router, I figured I'd give it a good ol' reboot to see what would happen. After rebooting, WinAmp saw my device! I clicked the Connect button in the Device Manager and... nothing happened. Again. Next, I figured I'd check out the Windows Firewall. Scrolling through the list of programs, I noticed WinAmp was not listed. I added WinAmp to the list and allowed it on Home/Work (Private) networks, which is how Windows 7 categorizes my wireless network. After doing so, WinAmp on Android actually asked if I wanted to allow my device to connect to my computer! Yes!!! Why didn't Windows ask me this to begin with!? So, the lesson here is: Windows Firewall is a jerk. Just a cautiouary tale for anyone else that has this issue. :) To allow WinAmp in Windows Firewall... - Open the Control Panel - Click System and Security - Click the Allow a program through Windows Firewall link under Windows Firewall - Click the Change settings button at the top and authenticate if asked - Click the Allow another program... button at the bottom - After the list of programs is generated, scroll down to Winamp and highlight it - After highlighting Winamp, click the Network location types... button, and ensure only Home/Work (Private) networks is checked. Click OK after making any necessary changes, if needed. - With Winamp still highlighted, click Add at the bottom. - Verify WinAmp is now listed in the Allowed programs and features list with only Home/Work (Private) checked. If all looks okay, click OK at the bottom. |
USB sync is very slow and pauses frequently
Yesterday, I tried to copy my entire library (around 1500 songs, totalling a little over 5G) to my Droid X using USB sync. The sync kept giving me predicted times like 500 minutes. That seemed excessive, so I started watching it. It would pause for a while, then do a spurt of songs (unclear how many, but it definitely varied). During the spurt, the predicted time would come down to something more reasonable, like 240 minutes. But then it'd pause, and the time would quickly creep back up.
It's not clear to me what, exactly, the problem is. Clearly, the high predicted times are due, in part, to the pauses (if it goes for a few minutes at a time without transferring anything, that's going to affect the total time), but I suspect there's also just a general transfer speed issue even when it was actively copying. My first thought was that my anti-virus software might be watching the transfers and slowing it down, so I went in and turned off its active scanning mode. No change in behavior. Then I decided to watch what it was doing in more detail, so I ran FileMon (a great app from SysInternals [now owned by MS] that will show you what files are being accessed), and sure enough, when a copy was happening, I could see the app accessing my desktop files, and when it was paused, I could see that no file I/O was happening. Unfortunately, the app can't monitor USB drives, so I couldn't see whether it was doing any writes on the device. While this was going on, I also ran some internet searches and found some suggestions around turning off transcoding (it was already off) and keeping WinAmp as the active, focussed app on the Desktop and keeping the Droid out of screen lock. So I did all of that, and still had no improvement. I finally gave up, killed the sync, and used Windows File Explorer to copy my music directory across to the device. That took about 3 hours, so that's a good baseline of an expected copy time. On an older version of WinAmp (I think I was using 5.53 before I installed 5.59 yesterday), I used to sync to an SD card that I use in my GPS. I know that when I did that, the app often froze up after doing a write (for example when I copied a group of songs or did a sync). My observation then was that it was writing a catalog file to the device during the freeze. So I wonder whether a similar thing is going on here, but after each song, or chunk of songs, or something like that. There is a difference, though - in the old version, WinAmp Desktop was totally frozen (i.e. unresponsive UI) during this catalog write; in yesterday's experience, the app wasn't frozen - it just wasn't transferring anything to the device. So this may be a red herring, but I mention it in case it turns out to be relevant. Under Devices
in 5.581 when you link a phone to winamp, under Portables a "loading ..." woudl appear until the two are linked up fully. However, now that doesn't happen, there is nothing untill it's fully loaded up. Can you bring up the "loading icon" stuff? I really need it. I have a big issue with my new HTC desire phone. For some bizarre reason, it takes 30mins to load up and link with Winamp. I don't know why, i've posted a thread about it and hope for some help. I don't get why some people with 160gb ipods can link up in seconds, but my HTC desire with 32gb card takes 30mins. |

usb syncing to samsung galaxy (Android) - some files fail
Experimenting with Winamp & the Samsumg Galaxy, but not using WiFi at the moment because it sprays files in the root directory.
I created some new playlists and ran a sync; a Handful of files gave me a "transfer failed" message. I have tried rebooting both devices, se-syncing multiple times etc. but still the same 8 files give me an error. The files are .mp3 files, 128k or 256k. They play OK in winamp on the PC. The playlist has 34 items (including the failing files). Any ideas? Any more detailed log file anywhere? |
Under Devices, can you add back the "loading..." as was like under the old "portables"?
This is useful as when you plug your phone into winamp it doesnt' come up automatically, and the old "loading" icon at least showed you something was in progress.... |

Right-click on the portable under Device and it own't eject says a warning that can't eject as something else using it, or along those lines.

There has been a change in the CD Ripping code in how it pertains to creating playlists.
For example, it used to be that when you would rip a CD and had it create a playlist it would create it in the format #EXTM3U #EXTINF:223,Breathe Carolina - Down 01 - Breathe Carolina - Down.flac #EXTINF:187,Woe, Is Me - Hot N Cold 02 - Woe, Is Me - Hot N Cold.flac #EXTINF:294,Artist Vs Poet - Bad Romance 03 - Artist Vs Poet - Bad Romance.flac In a sense making it: #EXTINF:223,<Trackartist> - <Title> ## - <Trackartist> - <Title>.flac Now the output is: #EXTM3U #EXTINF:223,Various Artists - Down 01 - Breathe Carolina - Down.flac #EXTINF:187,Various Artists - Hot N Cold 02 - Woe, Is Me - Hot N Cold.flac #EXTINF:294,Various Artists - Bad Romance 03 - Artist Vs Poet - Bad Romance.flac Now making the output #EXTINF:223,<Artist> - <Title> ## - <Trackartist> - <Title>.flac I liked the previous method better. I am not sure if this was a planned change or in which version this change happened. Thanks |
Hi
I think I found the problem for the portables. (all below is USB cable syncing) If I use Winamp 5.59, my HTC desire does not get found under Devices/Portables or will take upto 1 hour to load!!!!! If I use Winamp 5.581, my HTC desire will be found under Devices/Portables immediately or more usuall I have to go into option preferences and choose Disk E for the location, and then it takes 1-2 mins to load up the files. The bug is likely the new Android 1.2 plugin.... Can anyone please assist? Contact me if need be.... |
I'm also having trouble syncing to my Android device. Not only that, but Winamp is recognizing ALL media on the SD card as music - not just the stuff in the folder I specified under Portables.
That is NOT good... Listing via WiFi Sync now also shows two copies of every song, one of which always has a length of 0. :| |
bemymonkey - But do you have problems linking your android phone to winamp?
I have no issues using the cable linking winamp 5.581 to my HTC desire, but with 5.59 it takes forever each time... I've a 32GB card.... |
I just went through hell to get my phone paired. Multiple uninstall-/reinstall-processes (both the latest stable version and this beta), changing drive letters, trying WiFi and USB... also, I can't seem to get my phone recognized as a regular USB device any more - it's always an Android device, which doesn't seem very stable or usable yet, what with no covers being transferred, all media on the SD card listed in Winamp (even sound effects from games and stuff)...

Hi
I've tried repeatedly to get someone on here to assist but no luck (please can a moderator/developer help). This is how I sorted it out: 1) You have to downgrade back down to 5.581 2) Link your android phone via USB cable 3) ensure you have USB or Disk drive status on your phone (as is case with HTC), i.e. you are using your phoen as a hard drive. Your phone should show up as "loading" under Portables, if not then do following (I have to do this everytime unlike for my old Nokia n81!!!!!): 1) goto right click options>prefernces>plugins>portables 2) Under protables click the Andriod plug in 3) click choose configure selected plug in 4) Choose the disk drive your phone respresents (should be "E" but check windows explorer if need be) 5) it should show as loading under Portables. Note: first time it may take a LONG time to load, future load ups won't be as slow If there is anything with blank tags you can edit them all at once and change one field for all and press okay (takes a while but sorts it all out) Hope this helps.... |
All I can really say is that I believe all those issues are fixed for the final release.
There'll be a 'Discover' button in the Devices view that you can use instead of you needing to go to config to connect/detect the device (when Winamp is already running). Thank you for your patience :-) |
DJ Egg - Thx, i'll cross my fingers for the next beta version or full version... It's a very vital part of my use now for Winamp (and i'm sure for others also).
thx |

The long wait is over!

podcast support
it seems the way that winamp wants you to use it is to install the desktop client and then sync from there. this makes sense for music but not so much for podcasts. All the android podcast apps do not require this step... you simply download straight to the phone. Will there be this type of functionality in the future?
