Winamp works BUT NO OTHER sound!! Help

Hi all,
Updates to the latest Winamp, made a slight change to the Winamp preferences where I selected my AC'97 Realtek audio card and hey presto winamp works BUT nothing else. In my Device driver it says there is my soundcard but in Sounds And Audio Devices - No Audio Device and I can't pick it up it is greyed out. In dxdiag in Sound, I test Directsound and it says No Driver. In dxddiad in Music Microsoft Synthesizer says there is no sound Driver but my realtek Ac97 audio works fine> I have tried disabling the souncard in BiOS, I have all the latest drivers etc... What I don't understand is how can Winamp work BUT not my PC beeps etc, Mediaplayer, Audiacity and web browsers NONE of them have sound. am going a bit crazy as have been looking at loads of forums tried all sorts and nothing happens. Would appreciate help, tks....

Are you using an onboard sound chip or a "manually" installed soundcard? Usually it recommended to disable the onboard sound only if you have a installed a soundcard and you want to use the card instead of the onboard sound.

Have you checked the Realtek site?...
Quote:

From Realtek FAQ

Q7: There is no sound from my speakers.

A7: Make sure speakers are turned on and the phone jack is connected properly. After driver installation, check if all audio sound devices appear under CONTROL PANEL\SYSTEM\DEVICE MANAGER\SOUND, VIDEO & GAME.

If there are yellow exclamation marks beside any one of the audio devices, it isn't working or the driver has not been installed correctly. Remove the faulty device using remove tab, and then go to the WINDOWS\INF\OTHER directory and delete the REALTEK*.INF file.

You can now re-start the system to install the driver again or simply install through "add new hardware" from the control panel.

Help here is generally specific to Winamp. When someone has a system issue, we recommend Tech Support Guy and Suggest A Fix. Although they are not affiliated with or endorsed by Nullsoft/Winamp, they have been commonly suggested here at Winamp Forums.
