Draining Power like crazy

Or am I the only one always with a warm pocket?

Since installing :winamp: my cell is running low on battery about twice as fast with the same usage.

Conz 26th October 2010 19:33

I'm seeing this too.

jakamph 28th October 2010 12:26

WiFi Sync

I think that the WiFi Sinc is keeping the phone from going to standby. I noticed yesterday that my up time/awake times were almost the same. I turned off the WiFi sync and today I'm noticing much more reasonable numbers (currently 19 minutes up time/9 minutes awake).

I'm hoping this was the reason for my battery issues the past few days.

jakamph 28th October 2010 21:23

Made my way through the majority of my day (~11 hours unplugged) and normal usage (listening to some form of audio most of the day). I haven't had to charge at all, so shutting of the wireless sync seems to have fixed the issue.

I don't know if this is due to the fact that I haven't actually accomplished a wireless sync or if it would do this with a successful wireless sync.

Hopefully, it's fixed soon.

Bigtuna00 28th October 2010 23:47

Agreed, battery usage with Winamp appears to be 50% worse. Good call about Wifi sync, I may try disabling that since the Advanced tab doesn't exist in the Desktop app anyway.

Using Spare Parts, and looking at "Battery History", Winamp is far and away the highest under "Network Usage" (over twice as much as Calendar and Mail).

EDIT: to be clear, I'm not actually using Wifi sync. Since the Advanced tab isn't available for configuring the music and playlist folder, I've never actually using Wifi sync to sync any music. So this battery drain is just whatever Winamp is doing while "idle".

If this can't be optimized, I'd suggest adding a sync button to the main UI of the app (rather than hiding it in settings).

Mine also destroyed my battery life.

Samsung Vibrant -- Galaxy S

Even with my wifi turned off in my phone settings, my phone was extremely hot all day and i could actually watch my battery life drop while just having the phone on scrolling through homescreens.

Also draining while winamp was not active.

Winamp installed: winamp not running: wifi off. Still phone was acting like wifi or bluetooth was on, getting very hot in the upper area of the phone, not the battery, indicating it was continuously pinging/activating the wifi or bluetooth adapter.

I did sync it wirelessly one time, that seems to be what triggered this to start.

Very odd that it was still doing this even with my wifi turned off.

I like the app, but i like my battery life more. :)
I was down to roughly 5 hours of battery life while the phone was idle.
Had to uninstall, sorry. Will try again next beta version.

rkilljoy 30th October 2010 18:24

I'm sorry to say but this app is not draining my battery. Works perfect on my Eris.

Just found this thread but already uninstalled too! Found my battery life was absolutely atrocious - looked at the detailed battery info and found network usage was absolutely massive for Winamp. Also never got the WiFi sync to work anyway so couldn't see the point in keeping it installed! May investigate again at a future date when it is more stable.

killerkarl 2nd November 2010 06:22

Turning of WIFI-Sync did the trick. Battery life back to normal.

DJ Egg 4th November 2010 01:54

At a guess, it's probably the auto-mount setting, which I think was 'on' by default.
Go into settings and switch it off.
We've made it 'off' by default for the next release.

Barastan 14th November 2010 20:19

This has also been an issue for me. I've found that my battery time has been halved with Winamp active or inactive. Also, the hot pocket syndrome is really intensive.

Part of the reason that I downloaded Winamp (other than that I've been a groupie for years) was for the wifi sync. I'm hoping the next version of Winamp for Android addresses this problem.

rabidfurball 30th November 2010 15:24

battery life is terrible with wifi sync enabled. please fix it... winamp is awesome otherwise, and wifi sync is very useful, but would be so much more useful if i could leave it on and let it sync autonomously.

It would be great if there was an option to enable wifi sync only when the phone is plugged in. It would also temporarily fix this problem.

Newest version is still keeping phone awake in sleep mode unless the app is manually closed ("Force Stop" in Froyo app manager). WiFi Sync on/off seems to be irrelevant.

Jaguubig 1st December 2010 13:38

yes, i have noticed that too, battery usage with Winamp appears to be 50% , bad..

neutron187 7th December 2010 02:00

I noticed the same battery use on my phone. I used several power monitor programs to track down the problem and it turned out the winamp app is hammering the 3g connection.

Brief summary of what I've found:

3g on + screen off = no problem

3g on + screen on = winamp constantly using 3g connection (force close only way to stop it; rebooting would delay the problem for a bit but it would inevitably start back up)

when connected to wifi, winamp wasn't using the wifi connection, but if i went back to 3g it started going again.

This eats my battery in a matter of hours. I've tried different ROMS and this problem persists. I don't have a monitor to determine if this happens on 4g network.

Phone: EVO4G

I love the app, if I can be of any help testing solutions let me know.

Same problem on Droid X

Hello,

I am getting the same problem on the Droid X...terrible battery life and a "warm pocket" from the phone constantly using 3G whether the app is active or not. Devs, any update on this issue?

Phone: DROID X

killermojo 14th December 2010 20:36

I'm having the same problem, when I force close the wifisync service my phone cools off and my battery life is again acceptable. Please fix this guys, it's a dealbreaker for me right now!

Phone is Nexus One

MasterEvilAce 21st March 2011 01:18

Bump!

It's nearing the end of march, and this is still a problem... just got my first android phone but was able to track down my poor battery to winamp's wifi sync, and I found this thread.

Also, the automount feature is annoying since it completely overrides the android setting.

DoomSwitch 21st March 2011 04:19

Look, Winamp is for POWER USERS

Only uninstall stopped drainage

I'm sad, I had to completely remove winamp to restore normal battery usage on my phone. Disabling wifi sync and automount didn't change things usage wise. Bummer. Installed PowerAmp in place of winamp and aside from losing the convenient ability to sync via wifi am liking it alot. I hope the drainage issue can be addressed and fixed quickly.

wieesiee 23rd April 2011 10:59

Have no problem with WiFi-sync, I don't use it.
But:
I was several times under the impression that pausing Winamp (with the headphone button, if that matters) and unplugging the headset leaves winamp in a state where it drains the battery REALLY fast. Didn't have the time to track this down, b/c the battery was always fully depleted when I looked at my phone. If I have time, I'll try to reproduce this.
Other than that I'm not having problems with winamps power consumption.

Using a Moto DEFY, if that matters. I usually get ~2 days out of it before recharging, with the described situation leaving less than one day.

smittypap 11th May 2011 04:37

Bumpity-Bump-Bump

I just found this thread after spending three days tracking down the source of my very hot power drain. Turns out it was indeed Winamp and only the WiFi sync process was running.

If it helps, the power drain was only a problem when...
1) WiFi Sync was enabled
2) Not connected to any WiFi network

With a network traffic monitor, I could see the Winamp process hitting my 3G connection every 4 seconds. Once I connected to a WiFi network, the traffic pattern continued but it was NOT causing a power drain or overheating. Seems like the simple solution would be to code the WiFi sync process to shut the hell up when the phone is using a 1/3/4G network. Whatever it's doing at that time, the phone no likey.

Winamp 1.0.3 on Android 2.2.1 on Droid X.
