MrSinatra 30th June 2011 22:30

cool.

are there ever beta threads so we can DL a beta and report on it prior to official release?

DrO 30th June 2011 22:36

there has been in the past (is usually indicated in the thread title like with 5.59 Beta), otherwise it's all done by beta team / QA.

and remove that 'Broken Smart View maker' link from your sig plzkthx :)

-daz

MrSinatra 30th June 2011 22:38

ok, well keep me in mind. :)

btw, the new album art featues are AWESOME. bigger art, and NO TITLES! just like in the home page! well done! still digging into this...

will remove my sig link, but what happened to eggs post?

EDIT: smartviews are still broken!

Juanus 30th June 2011 22:47

i can't reproduce a failure (as mentioned in the other thread) and Egg's just re-confirmed it's ok as well with the public 5.6.2.3161 builds.

-daz

DJ Egg 30th June 2011 23:10

@MrSinatra

Please confirm you downloaded build 3161 and not 3159
3159 was up briefly, but we replaced it with 3161 which has the ml_local fix and a few aac-related fixes.

Oh and yeah, I did make a post about the beta builds, but I deleted it because DrO had beaten me to it, lol.

MrSinatra 30th June 2011 23:32

i have 3159, so i imagine thats it. i will try it all later, have to get on the road and offline for a few hours...

ps. i liked your post, wish it had stayed!

ujay 1st July 2011 00:11

Not seeing the Classic option on the Shoutcast Radio page anymore, seems to be a new design ???

There is something that approximates it now but doesn't remember previous search/genre selections, not what's wanted at all. Fixed colours and small text size are not good for these old eyes. And no direct bookmarking. And no bookmarking via the Station ID anymore, just when it was getting really useful, we'll be back to constantly chasing servers around. ***

[additional] Good work on the Album Art Icon views, but could we go back to scrolling by block rather than text lines in the Album Art Details view ???

UJ

*** Sorry Egg, you could almost predict the usual outcry :)

MrSinatra 1st July 2011 04:20

i have tried from this thread and the home page, and i keep getting 3159. how do i get 3161?

EDIT: i used remote desktop to a machine i hadn't tried to DL any winamp stuff on for months just now, and it got 3159 too!

DrO 1st July 2011 07:16

no idea why you're getting 3159 served up - must be a caching issue somewhere down the line from the servers to you (not unheard of to happen sometimes). might take a few days for it to update or see if one of the (safe) external sites who tend to mirror the downloads has the correct version on to grab (as there's other fixes between 3159 and 3161).

-daz

MrSinatra 1st July 2011 07:32

right on Doc, went to cnet, got 3161, all is well! thx.

DrO 1st July 2011 07:37

said it was fixed ;)

-daz

MrSinatra 1st July 2011 07:59

unfortunately, can't find lite that way though. does winamp have public ftp?

DrO 1st July 2011 08:01

there's the lite option on the components selection page when using one of the full installers.

-daz

MrSinatra 1st July 2011 08:17

brilliant! have to remember that!

mynameisnobody 1st July 2011 08:19

cool new albumarts! Thanks!
An option to see also the Artist under the cover would be nice!
Think that would be very helpfull for smartviews with singles or generally for big collections.

Sabine Klare 1st July 2011 08:42

Hello everyone,
cool new albumarts sounds very nice...
I will wait some days, maybe one week, to get 3161 and not 3159. I will clear the cookies before I download it again (maybe in Firefox 5 instead of Internet Explorer directly from this thread). For me as a German user I have to decide between German from the main page or English or Multi-Language from this thread (it must be full-version). I will prepare something before doing it with many thanks to the instructions...
I will take a look here in these days and then I will be back...
Winamp is really nice...
Greetings from Sabine Klare Aka Sternenmaschinebine

Pbirv 1st July 2011 10:21

I just read that AOL is teaming up with Slacker. Does that mean that their stations will no longer be available on Winamp after they're added on there?

ujay 1st July 2011 10:25

I see the problem with the wrong build here too.

Right click the installer file > Properties > Details to check you have the correct build (3161)

If you are getting build 3159 then try downloading the multi language version instead,
or use this link

http://download.cnet.com/Winamp/3000...-10251792.html

UJ

Sabine Klare 1st July 2011 10:44

Right clicked the installer file > Properties > Details for all the 3 downloaded setups (all the 3 from here and the main page):
English: 5.6.2.3159
German: 5.6.2.3161
Multi Language: 5.6.2.3161
I think, I will take the third version with Multi Language to switch between the two languages English and German...
But thank Your also for the link.
I am curently running Luke Firewalker of Avira AntiVir Personal (4-5 hours) and I need to make a second running, so it will last a little bit longer now for me (I hate such problems). I can make the install so many hours later now...
Greetings again

DJ Egg 1st July 2011 13:57

Hi Sabine :)

Glad to hear you finally got hold of build 3161
Yes, it will have been a cache issue.
Usual fix is to empty browser cache and then wait a bit before redownloaing.

Please let us know if everything is working ok with Milkdrop v2.24

@Ujay
I hear you about SHOUTcast Radio view. I did warn the team about the high potential of a backlash...
Hopefully, we can get the right-click menu (play, enqueue, bookmark) reinstated at some point.
At least there's an option to switch to a classic-style view and 100 stations per page.
The genre search works better in this version, but yes, it would be nice also if there was an option to remember your selection.
Any such updates can be made serverside....

ujay 1st July 2011 15:41

A few observations on the new Shoutcast Radio page.

The 'Classic' view is gone and has been replaced by an alternative listing. (3 line icon in VIEW).

So I guess we have to make the best of it.

PROs -

Can be set to list 100 staions per page, maybe not as good as one whole list, but not so bad.
Remembers column settings - Hooray.

CONs -

Does not remember selections from refresh to refresh, let alone session to session.

No direct bookmarking. Useful for selecting a few stations to play later.

As bookmarking now has to be done in Winamp, this means by Server only. This is far from satisfactory as broadcasters often get moved around by their service suppliers and the boookmark goes dead. This is back to the old days of chasing around to keep the list maintained all the time.
With the introduction of static Station ID's Winamp was able to make bookmarks that took this into account. If a bookmark was dead you could usually be sure it was off air, rather than a broken link. Any chance we can get back to this ?

Design -

I'd like to see the Genres Selection box above the 'Popular Tags', not below.

Anything that can be done to vary text size or colour would be welcome.

Note. This is serverside code running in Winamp's browser, so going back to an earlier Winamp version will not change anything.
Also, it could have been worked on as we speak, updating would be silent. Check the site page for latest features.

lostinsound 1st July 2011 16:34

Sweet. The new album art features are awesome. Would it be possible, when it's set to not show album title under the art, to have it so the title always pops up in a text box when you mouse over the album art? Right now it only pops up when the title is too long to fit under the art (which makes sense when you have the titles displayed).

iron2000 2nd July 2011 11:23

Nice!
The separate Winamp volume slider reappeared in Win7's mixer after I updated!

EDIT:
Spoke too soon.
The slider disappeared after enqueuing 5 folders with Winamp still opened and suddnly finding in 5 copies of Winamps (not sure what caused the copies).
Then the slider refuse to show up again.

evolution76 2nd July 2011 17:09

Actually according to this description DJEgg gave for the new Winamp; "Misc: Redesigned SHOUTcast Radio online service view (new school & classic options)" So I'm guessing that the 5.62 was at least supposed to still have the classic Shoutcast radio option.

Please Winamp, don't tell me that the classic view got cut out of the new version at the last minute. I really prefer scrolling down the list of stations to flipping pages over.

DJ Egg 2nd July 2011 21:17

@Pbirv

No, the new classic-style option is on the same page, along with the option to show 100 stations per page

I just saw that. The problem is, you still have to flip pages over. That might not be quite so bad if the page numbers were laid out on the screen so that, for example, one could go from page 1 to page 4 without having to go thru 2 and 3. As it is, I'm going back to Winamp 5.58. Sorry, don't take this personally, but I prefer being able to see what's offered without having to flip pages.

ujay 3rd July 2011 00:49

Did you even read the post you quoted ?

[additional] The old style classic view is gone.
If you miss it, then the best course of action is to make constructive suggestions about how to improved what has replaced it (as you already have).

Worthwhile suggestions will have a lot more effect than ranting, (though maybe it makes you feel better :))

AAC Monaural Encoding Option Removed: Why?

The 5.62 release notes include this item: "New: Fraunhofer AAC Codec with VBR encoding support"

Support for VBR is certainly good news but I am unhappy that the user option for monaural encoding of LC-AAC tracks has been removed from ripping preferences. I have used Winamp to rip thousands of monaural tracks with the old CT encoder (and have thousands more to do). Encoding single-track source material into stereo tracks creates larger files with no benefit whatever to the listener. It is simply a waste of disk space. Please restore the monaural ripping option in the next version.

OT: kudos to the team for fixing the playback distortion problems with certain Mp4 audio tracks. I have a lot of those and they now play perfectly!

thinktink 4th July 2011 05:15

Oh nice. The AVI video playback got unkludged,

Quite a few unhappy campers with the new setup.

kzuse 4th July 2011 07:50

@DJ Egg:

What do you mean by "HD-AAC" in the first post?
Do you mean HE-AAC? So this release doesn't support encoding HE-AAC/aacPlus at the moment? Then it's not good for me, I suppose ;( As I sometimes (seldomly, but sometimes) use HE-AAC for very-low-bitrate audio distribution via email.

Is HE-AAC decoding still supported in this release?

And when will HE-AAC encoding be supported again?

Thanks for the information!
Best regards,
kzuse

DrO 4th July 2011 07:56

HD-AAC is different from HE-AAC.

HE-AAC is still supported for encoding and decoding, just how it's provided is in a somewhat easier manner via the encoder options compared to the multitude of encoder options / entries as the old CT based encoder had i.e. this new one should be a lot simpler to use.

-daz

Koopa 4th July 2011 08:57

As DrO said, you still have HE-AAC, like the small Fraunhofer HE-AAC picture on the winamp.com sites indicates. ;)

As for HD AAC:

http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/en/bf/a...daac/index.jsp

kzuse 4th July 2011 10:06

Aaah, I see. Heard of that thing a year ago or so (scalable AAC encoding with a lossless layer) but didn't remember that it was called "HD-AAC" :)

And in the first post, it sounds a bit like it's something that was included in previous releases, but isn't in the current one. But in fact, HD-AAC wasn't supported at all.

@Koopa: Oh, yes.... didn't look up there at all ;-)

All the best,
kzuse

synthetiq 4th July 2011 21:46

Thanks for the new version!!

synthetiq 5th July 2011 16:43

After unninstalling the previous version I had installed in my pc, I installed this new version and I guess there's something wrong with windows explorer menu control because when I right click over a folder with mp3 files I dont see the options to enqueue or play in winamp, as it was set before.
Folder context menu options are activated in winamp prefs, so I dont see what can be the cause...
