As far as I can tell, whenever Winamp 2.71 reaches the end of a MIDI, it crashes. Not particularly badly - Ctrl-Alt-Del, end "Winamp", then run Winamp again seems to get it working again, but it's annoying. It could be that this happens whenever it goes from a MIDI to a mod of some kind - most of my playlist consists of MIDIs and mods. Is this something strange about my system (it wouldn't be the first - it's coming to resemble the Great Waystone), or has anyone else noticed this?

1. Go to http://pp666.cjb.net/midi.htm and update your MIDI plug-in - there is a new version available with several critical fixes.
2. What sound card do you have ? Have you tried to change options in the MIDI plug-in configuration ? I think that "Midi mapper / MCI" device should work OK.
3. Could you send me (piotrpw@polbox.com) one of MIDI files that crash the plug-in ?

I downloaded the plugin - no change. My sound card's a Soundblaster live platinum (add capitals and exclamation marks to taste, or lack thereof). I'll be sending you one of the MIDIs shortly, ISP willing, although all of them seem to have the same effect. The box in the plugin configuration lists MIDI Mapper, MIDI Mapper (MCI), Creative S/W Synth, A: SB Live! MIDI Synth, B: SB Live! MIDI Synth, SB Live! MIDI Out [CC00], and Microsoft Synthesizer. All of them show this problem.

Playing MIDI files in WinAmp 2.71

I had WinME reporting IN_MIDI.DLL crash and Win2k FREEZE! on the same midi file (sorry can't post it as I don't have a Web page). Before crashing in WinME it started playing, but the sound was wierd. I think what's happening is that tempo or velocity has a large value (with highest bit set to 1) and it's treated as a negative somewhere. That is judging from the sound I heard and the way it should be (played in Windows Media Player and YAMP32). The problem is persistent, i.e. happens 100% of times on certain files, on both OSes, and only in WinAmp (both 2.7 and 2.71). An updated IN_MIDI.DLL (yes, I downloaded and installed it) does not help a bit.

Any ideas?

Alexei

Rule #1: if my plug-in crashes - send one of MIDI files that crash it to me (pp_666@poczta.onet.pl ; old email account seems messed up at the moment) so I can determine if the crash is being caused by your system or by your MIDI files.

SOLUTION (finally, damnit)
Make sure that you have the latest version (v2.35 at the moment) and disable 'sample data from...' option.

magnezium 26th December 2000 02:14

hey i can't get your 2.35 for some reason... cjb doesn't seem to allow linking to files elsewhere... and your fortunecity page doesn't seem to have a link to 2.35...

If you can't get that file, read this.
