Hi,
when I try to open an mp3-file by just clicking on it, Winamp throws the whole id3-tag info into the playlist. For example: When I try to open 'Limp Bizket - My Generation.mp3' this is shown on the playlist:

1. Limp
2. Bizkit
3. -
4. My
5. Generation

But none of them is the file, so I just can't play it?! And Winamp just loops trough them all without making a sound. I already looked at the association of my mp3-files, but that's OK...


So: When I drag a file into Winamp, everything's OK, but when I just click a file, it doesn't work.

Does it do this with all MP3s, or just one's you've created or tagged yourself, or what?

I already installed Winamp for about five times. And it happens with all my mp3's, also the downloaded ones and the ones I made myself...

Do you have virus protection software? You might have some wierd virus.

this is absolutely weird... never came across this before... why are there suddenly so many weird posts?? i believe there is a conspiracy going on...

I don't use any anti-virus software, but i'll check it. My operating system is Windows ME(Millenium Edtion). But that shouldn't be the problem... And eh, I am really not in the conspiracy...

Does the file (or any of your other mp3's) play ok in other players?
eg: Windows Media Player

Do they play in Winamp if you use the open -> file / dir command/s from within winamp?

Are you sure these are proper mp3's and not m3u or pls playlists?
What size are they (on average), KB/MB-wise?

Also, goto Winamp Prefs -> Input -> MPEG Audio Decoder -> Configure -> Title tab:
Tell us what your settings are for Title formatting, eg. default settings =
Title formatting = %7
Use ID3 tags = checkmarked
ID3 Title formatting = %1 - %2

Well, the preferences are OK. And yes, they all play in Napster, Media Jukebox, Windows Media Player. They are all mp3's, no playlists. The average size is about 3/4 megs. But I have some mp3's of about 1 to 8 megs... The Bitrate is mostly 128.

I've gotta say that this is a mighty strange phenomenum.

Firstly, have you installed any 3rd party Winamp plugins, particularly Input or General Purpose?
If so, please list them.
It's possible that a General plugin such as Album List is causing this problem?
Do you possibly have 2 input plugins that handle mp3 files?

Is "Play" or "Enqueue" the default action?
/goto: Prefs -> FileTypes : is "Enqueue as default action" checkmarked?
Is Winamp your default MP3 player? (mp3 is selected in the list of available ext's)

Confirm this:

Exit Winamp

goto: (Windows) Start -> Settings -> Folder Options -> File Types tab
Scroll down for "Winamp media file", hi-lite & click "Edit"
Hi-lite "Play in Winamp" (which should be bold if it is the default action), click "Edit"
The command line should be as follows:
"C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe" "%1"
The MIME type should be: audio/m3u
If not, change it & "Okay" everything.

If "Enqueue" is the default action, the command line is:
"C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe" /ADD "%1"
(the command line for "Enqueue" regardless of whether it is the default action or not)

Exit Folder Options & try opening an mp3 in Winamp again.
